Queues at polling stations

There was one person at the polling station I use. That was me.

I was a bit concerned at our polling station when the young man in front of me gave the address of our flats. I've never seen him before. When I challenged him he said that he 'moves about a lot'. Name of Smith. AIBU to be suspicious?

The young man didn't have a polling card. Just waved a letter about. Hmmm.

Only me at my polling station too. Then I went to Morrisons where the assistant on the till said that although she is 34 she has never voted as she didn’t understand it! Grrr!

It was said that the older folk or words to that effect might not turn out in the bad weather.
About a dozen people coming and going when I went. All of whom I would say were over 50s and it was sleeting.

You do not need a polling card. If you don't have it just tell the clerk your name and address and they should be able to find you on the electoral register. They may tell you your number and if you don't mind letting the party tellers know you can give them your number on the way out.

The purpose of telling is to tick off which of your known supporters have voted so no-one phones later or offers them a lift. At our polling station there are only ever LibDem and Tory tellers.

One of the Tory tellers told me they no longer tick off lists, go to houses or phone people (known as knocking up). She said they've not done that for years. Presumably they don't need to because the Tories and their friends in the media have spent colossal amounts of money and are confident of getting in.

The Tory tellers don't seem to be aware of the strict rules on elections. One of them was handing out mince pies to voters on their way in until the LibDem teller told her that was illegal. Another actually had a pile of leaflets which she was going to give out and had to be told that this is strictly forbidden.

Jane, he may be a student registered at his parents' place- but you can't really throw aspertions on the whole process because you have seen someone you don't know ...

On the other hand, it seems 1000s of students are being prevented from voting because the admin made an error with their registration. He could be one of those perhaps.

Only for the fact that I wanted a packet of cigs did I bother going out and because I had my hat, coat and boots on I carried on to the polling station-----not a soul about !
The weather has turned nasty here with pools of water forming everywhere so will put a lot off, especially those my age.
I did entertain those who were behind desks by saying " eeny meeny miny mo " and asking if anyone had a pin.

Just us casting our votes in the village hall. Tipping it down outside. DH talked me out of doing postal votes as he said we needed to get out more.

Do I need my polling card to vote?

You do not need to bring your polling card with you to vote.

However, you will be asked to confirm your name and address before you can be issued with a ballot paper.

Polling cards are basically used to alert a citizen they are registered to vote, telling them where they must head in order to do so.

There is no requirement to hand over you card in order to cast your ballot.

I was the only one at the polling station in the civic centre at just after 9 am.

It was like the January sales - elbows out, jostling in the queue, me, me, me first...... not!

Very busy at our polling station in a small market town in the midlands. In fact, the busiest I'd ever seen it. Nice to see some young people amongst the mainly older age group voter.

As I said on another thread, there was a long queue at our polling station. They spilled out of the church hall, and down the steps.

I've never seen it so busy.

Seems many voting by proxi are being turned away- and only accepted if they make phone calls and persist

''I’ve just had a call from my son who is our proxy...He was told we are not on the list.probably because we live abroad?. I called the local offices..I was told that they had many complaints! It seems the officers are not checking the end of the roll..we are listed correctly on Overseas Voters List!''

It's rather worrying that this might mean Labour getting in!
