A Brazilian?

Ana Thu 14-Mar-13 16:17:50

D'yuo think he might have changed his mind, then? confused

Barrow Thu 14-Mar-13 16:10:44

I understand he made the comment about the Falkland Islands over a year ago when he was Archbishop of Buenos Airies (sp).

Anne58 Thu 14-Mar-13 15:27:35

They should stick to putting their own house in order, before venturing into politics.

I suppose that could be yet another indication of the Catholic Church not listening to the people, as after all the Falkland Islanders themselves have voted and made their wishes abundantly clear, but no, the opinion of the people most affected is discounted. sad

Plus ca change, plus c'est le meme chose.

ginny Thu 14-Mar-13 15:26:18

Of course he would.

Ana Thu 14-Mar-13 14:40:16

grin phoenix.

Just heard the new pope thinks the UK should hand the Falklands back to Argentina...

Anne58 Thu 14-Mar-13 14:03:16

Good name, better then the one that was predicted.

As we were driving back from Enfield it was broadcast on the radio.

Just silly if you ask me, the announcer covered the bit about the white smoke and then said "The name of the new pope will be Announced Shortly"

Barrow Thu 14-Mar-13 09:33:33

Decided to go to 7.00 pm Mass last night but because the name of the new Pope hadn't been announced the congregation ended up packed into the sitting room of the Presbytery watching the TV. After Mass the Priest was giving a talk and halfway through opened champagne and we all toasted the new Pope. We were particularly pleased he has chosen the name of Francis as our church is St. Francis of Assisi !

Elegran Thu 14-Mar-13 09:13:56

Do they still add "et bene pendente" ?

Gorki Thu 14-Mar-13 09:12:20

Yes it is gracesmum It annoyed me when they kept translating it as "there is a pope"which would be an entirely different construction.Habemus papem means"we have a pope"

gracesmum Thu 14-Mar-13 09:01:05

Sorry to be a pedant but isn't it Habemus papam?
Anybody (other than the red tops) said "Hand of God" yet?

absent Thu 14-Mar-13 08:54:47

merlotgran Given that he is such a conservative, he won't upset the Falkland Islanders because he has already fallen out with Christina Fernandez de Kirchener over abortion, artificial insemination and free contraception.

Galen Wed 13-Mar-13 22:06:56

Yip! But showing off! In Latin!

Greatnan Wed 13-Mar-13 22:02:28

Perhaps they just wanted an older man as a stop-gap - I don't think he is likely to be a great reformer.
42% of the world's Catholics live in South America, so it seems fitting to choose a pope from there.
The Catholic Church was not very outspoken against Hitler either!

Forzanonna Wed 13-Mar-13 22:00:46

Oops, sorry Galen, think that's what you said!

Forzanonna Wed 13-Mar-13 21:59:55

I'd hoped for someone younger, but, one assumes, the will of God.

Galen Wed 13-Mar-13 21:09:25

Deus volente!

JessM Wed 13-Mar-13 21:04:25

grin

milliesmum Wed 13-Mar-13 20:58:53

I wanted Sicola to win - then he would have been Pope Sicola (no - I know he would have taken another name - it just made me smile when my son said that)

Let's hope Pope Francis isn't too old to do some real good.

Galen Wed 13-Mar-13 20:26:13

This papa may be a sort of stepping stone to a real black pope?

Gally Wed 13-Mar-13 20:21:46

Not RC either. Disappointed that Cardinal Turkson from Ghana was not chosen. He seemed a good'un. He was born in '48 and had years on his side.

annsixty Wed 13-Mar-13 20:13:26

Galen Your aunt and the new Pope may well be exeptions to the rule but I stand by my original assessment that he is too old and it will not be long before the same scenario is played out again.

BAnanas Wed 13-Mar-13 20:05:11

It's quite apt he is from Latin America as that's where a huge proportion of the world's Catholics are. I like the fact that he did his own cooking and travelled by bus, and has taken the name of my favourite saint St Francis of Assisi. I don't think he spoke out when Argentina was living under a military junta and many political dissenters disappeared, perhaps he couldn't. I gather he has done a lot for the poor. I do hope that he will be a reformer and do something about the ongoing child abuse within the church and re-evaluate the church's position on contraception.

Galen Wed 13-Mar-13 20:04:26

You don't know! He might agree with them.

merlotgran Wed 13-Mar-13 19:57:01

I bet the Falkland Islanders are thrilled to bits hmm

MrsJamJam Wed 13-Mar-13 19:54:19

Poor man, after living in one room doing his own cooking and travelling on the bus, his new life is going to take some getting used to.
