Acronyms

Quite a few people seem to have problems with the acronyms when new. Often the sugestion from regular posters is to scroll down and there will be a link to acronyms. This only works on the desktop site. There is a link to the desktop site on the mobile site. However, if we could have a link to acronyms on the mobile site I feel this would help new posters.

There is a link on the mobile site Gymstagran it’s at the top not the bottom
It doesn’t make the shorthand any easier for some to understand though

Blubelle :I've checked on mine again and cant see one. I've just got the Gransnet banner showing alongside menu with inbox on the right. Then underneath forums >site stuff: and no link

Thank you for the suggestion, we've passed this on to our tech team and will try and get something sorted for you grin

mcem Fri 15-Feb-19 11:16:02

And while you're doing that, could you change the title from ACRONYMS to ABBREVIATIONS?

mcem Fri 15-Feb-19 11:17:06

Ps why not put the list in the menu? Easier to find!

JasmineGransnet (GNHQ) Fri 15-Feb-19 13:46:28

We're in the process of changing the title to Abbreviations/Acronyms, which should hopefully clear up some problems!

Sigh, I look at this site occasionally but always end up cross at the over use of abbreviations. Can't be bothered to spend 5 min trying to read what should be a 10 sec read. Gr8 4 sum I dnt !

Grandad1943 Sat 16-Mar-19 11:10:54

If I were GNHQ, I would not change Acronyms to Abbreviations on the site as that will upset the spelling and grammar police no end.

Heaven's above, the forum will never hear the end of it. grin

Chewbacca Sat 16-Mar-19 11:23:26

You're probably right Grandad, but at least that might deflect the spelling police from searching through posts to shame and embarrass people who's grasp of English grammar doesn't meet their exacting standards!

So many complaints about the acronyms that I searched and found they are pretty much universal , I did get a bit confused about some that I found it easier to type out the words instead , but it slows me up a lot . I do understand them when reading though , so I am sitting precariously on the fence wink

Why would it upset those of us who post in Pedants Corner Grandad ? Abbreviations is correct. You are being unnecessarily divisive.

Grandad1943 Sat 16-Mar-19 12:39:02

Problem is sodapop, the spelling and grammar police do not just post among their number in Pendants Corner. They carry out raids across the forum condemning any who dare to post that which is below their exacting standards. grin

sodapop Sat 16-Mar-19 15:08:01

I think the people to whom you refer Grandad are generally not those who post in Pedant 's Corner. I agree its ill mannered to correct anything written by another poster.
Your description is somewhat inflammatory.

sodapop agree with your post of 12.26, esp. last sentence. But, tis the nature of the beast!

Tin helmet on, chin strap fastened, sand bags in place, key on the corned beef can checked and would appear to be fit for purpose.

To the bunker!!!!

From online dictionary :

"acronym
/ˈakrənɪm/
noun
plural noun: acronyms

an abbreviation formed from the initial letters of other words and pronounced as a word (e.g. ASCII, NASA ).

Try saying DH or DD as a word.

Don't panic Captain Phoenix We stand together !!

Spot on Gonegirl

mcem Sat 16-Mar-19 21:45:35

Lost count of the number of times I've pointed that out Gonegirl.
Acronyms are not the same as abbreviations
UNESCO is an acronym while DGC is an abbreviation.

If you don't like them, don't use them but don't dictate to others who are quite happy with a fairly standard internet convention!

I don't really see this as a pedantic concern.

I do agree that it's very rude to correct spelling and grammar and have recently taken to calling out this unpleasant behaviour! If a few more of us did that, perhaps the message would get through to the pompous, pedantic posters!!

Gonegirl Sat 16-Mar-19 21:57:20

I have just once been totally unable to resist the temptation to correct a misspelling. blush It was when a poster spelled lightning (the kind that goes with thunder) as lightening.

I posted just the word 'lightning' in response. shock

I am sorry if poster, if you happen to be reading this.

mcem Sat 16-Mar-19 22:08:51

Gonegirl Do you need a lightly-slapped wrist?

I admit that, if I reply to a post with a spelling mistake, my post won't repeat the mistake (but I don't flag it up).

If you were to say quite blatantly that there was an error, I'd criticise you before the erring poster. Please join me in telling those who tend towards bullying and critical posts to desist!

Gonegirl Sat 16-Mar-19 22:17:24

I think I did follow up the post with 'sorry', if my memory serves me right.
