Unable to send mail

Since Monday, I have been unable to send or receive mail, through my Gmail account.
Am able to see GN as always logged in and viewing through Active. But have received no new GN since Monday.
The message I get is as follows:-
The connection to the outgoing server "smtp" gmail.com failed.
Additional outgoing mail servers can be configured for mail accounts in Settings>Mail>Accounts.

Are there any gurus out there that could tell me what this means in plain English please?

I sometime get an error message on AOL.

I turn my iPad off for a few seconds then start it up again and it seems to clear it.

Before I did this I tried all sorts in ‘settings’ but nothing worked. Are you going into GN via your email account? I go through the Internet direct to Gransnet and seldom have a problem.
Hope you soon get it sorted.
