Oh dear. I don't think its just me as I have seen some comments on Facebook - I was BORED!!! and I love a historical drama.

I did enjoy the first series, have not seen this one yet. With most new series of anything, the first always seems stilted, and then improves.

Preferred the Rowling/Galbraith on BBC1.
No contest!

We watched Victoria on +1. Didn't want to miss either.

Lord M is back next week. [swoon]

Greyduster Mon 28-Aug-17 10:15:30

I was bored halfway through the first series - I won't be watching this one.

kittylester Mon 28-Aug-17 10:16:26

Well that changes things! I'll watch it now!

They were laying the foundations for several stories, such as the chef and the dresser.
The old duchess was brought in as comic relief but can't compete with Downtown's dowager.

Definitely worth watching if Lord M is back. I enjoyed the first series, light entertainment.

Teetime Mon 28-Aug-17 15:12:03

Indeed I will watch Lord M- endlessly!!!

Anyone noticed who was the actress was who'd sadly died and the episode was dedicated to her

Pittcity Tue 29-Aug-17 13:40:25

I google the name overthehill and she was a production coordinator who had worked on a long list of programmes.

Thank you Pittcity I did some googling myself but couldn't find anything.

Is it me? I studied Victorian History at college, but that was many moons ago - but I'm just about sure that Victoria's "mistress of the robes" was much younger... I'm thinking the Duchess of Buccleuch was about 30 when she started as Mistress or whatever they call it "of the robes!" I know the one at the moment is in her 90s but I'm sure Victoria's was much younger... ? Is this historical licence with a big pinch of salt?

I just don't get this sanctification of Victoria. Yes, her reign was long and historically significant, but from what I've read of her she was an unpleasant little person and certainly not as popular as we are led to believe. I remember my grandparents saying (they would have been 27 and 29 in 1901) that when news came she had died, the universal cry was "The old girl's gone."

I enjoyed it.

suzied Tue 29-Aug-17 18:37:45

Didn't she have a German accent and speak German with Albert and the children?

Franbern Wed 06-Sep-17 10:39:47

Victoria is a good fictional drama - fun to watch, as long as no-one thinks it has anything but the faintest brush with real historical facts.

lemongrove Wed 06-Sep-17 10:42:42

Exactly Franburn ?
I like it, but have been known to watch almost anything historical, or hysterical as DH calls it.

I'm waiting for the Crown to begin again. I thought it was very well done and much enjoyed. Can't wait!!

MawBroon Sat 09-Sep-17 08:14:05

This is I think interesting reading. The scriptwriters seem to have taken considerable liberties with the poor Duchess of Buccleuch!

Love the series. But it's definitely Mills and boon and not to be taken too seriously. Just a comment, in the first episode when the HMS Trafalgar was launched there were about 30 people on the Quay side cheering . In reality there were 500,000 people gathered at Greenwich and the river was full of small boats. Of course they could not afford to film that so it ended up as quite a small affair !

DanniRae Sat 09-Sep-17 08:59:30

Is it just me or did Lord M not seem as dishy as in the first series? hmm

mrsmopp Sat 09-Sep-17 16:43:33

I've gone off him as well.

Jane10 Sat 09-Sep-17 16:48:45

Me too. Lehsen, her maid, was sacked very early on in real life but seems to have stuck around in the series. Victoria wanted her to stay but was forced to agree that she be sent back to Germany. I don't know why I know that. I clearly have a strange memory! confused

DanniRae Sat 09-Sep-17 18:12:14

Oh mrsmopp and Jane10 I am so glad it's not just me! He just doesn't look as handsome as he did. My daughter is taken by Albert but (apart from the fact that he is very young) I find him mediocre in the looks and personality department.
