Probably be shot down but I don’t think an historical person should be played by a person of a different colour .
What would the reaction be if Martin Luther King orNelson Mandela were to be played by a white actor ?
It doesn’t matter what colour fictional characters are .
I don’t watch Bridgestone because there were no black dukes and duchesses in those days .

There is already a very long thread about this, perhaps you'd like to have a look. It's simply called 'Anne Boleyn'.

There is already a long discussion about this, I couldn’t find it but I’m sure I saw it.

FannyCornforth Tue 25-May-21 11:31:14

It's in the same sub forum as this one.

Crazygran I am not so sure. It has been suggested with viable background research that Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, wife of George III had part African ancestry.

You may find this link informative. www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/secret/famous/royalfamily.html

Crazygran if you are a stickler for historical accuracy, I don't think that Bridgerton would be to your taste anyway.

She was such a huge historical figure. It all seems like box ticking to me

Crazygran. I started the ball rolling on this one. Just put your bullet proof vest on! grin

M0nica Tue 25-May-21 13:50:04

I am not remotely bothered by it.

I've said my piece on the other thread, but will just reiterate that those who justify their objections to AB being played by a black actress by saying that MLK couldn't be played by a white one are either missing the point in spectacular fashion or are suggesting that skin colour is more important than other things that may be 'wrong' with the portrayal of the physical characteristics of an actor, as compared to a historical character.

MLK's story is about being black. His story would not have happened had he been white. AB's skin colour was not historically relevant. That is the difference.

No, of course not, but you can’t say that nowadays.

TerriBull Tue 25-May-21 14:07:13

I have also read about Charlotte of Mecklenburg having black ancestry. Seeing her features on portraits I do think that her features would suggest that is the case.

In Kingston on Thames there is a blue plaque on a sizeable house house overlooking the Thames where a wealthy black merchant, Cesar Picton, lived during the 18th century.

Jesus is normally portrayed as a white man, just saying ;)

midgey Tue 25-May-21 14:14:35

Why on earth not! Quality of acting is the bit that matters.

FannyCornforth Tue 25-May-21 14:18:49

Is Anne Boleyn the new Meghan Markle? ?

Chestnut Tue 25-May-21 14:22:13

It's a ridiculous idea. Ann Boleyn was a real person who was white English. You cannot change history.

If there was a real black person whose story did NOT revolve about being black then the same would apply.

Rosie51 Tue 25-May-21 14:31:14

Jesus is normally portrayed as a white man, just saying ;) Yes, when the artist was white, and it's very inaccurate. Ethiopian artists depict him differently.

Doodledog Tue 25-May-21 14:34:14

Here is the thread from a couple of days ago when all this was rehashed over and over?

timetogo2016 Tue 25-May-21 14:34:22

Would some people be in uproar if our Queen or Diana was portrayed as black in a film ?.
Mmmmmm i wonder.

Chestnut Tue 25-May-21 14:39:58

I see on the other thread people are comparing this to Bridgerton. But that is fiction. They can cast whoever they like in fiction because the people are invented, not historical figures.
I do like historical dramas to have some attempt at reality, which they did at one time. Elizabeth R with Glenda Jackson and The Six Wives of Henry VIII with Keith Michell definitely tried to portray the people and the story realistically. Unlike more modern attempts which go for sensationalism just for entertainment value.

Chestnut the op is comparing it to Bridgerton, or Bridgestone (sic)

Lucca Tue 25-May-21 14:44:27

WHY ? Another identical thread??

Don’t posters look at current threads?

Chestnut Tue 25-May-21 14:46:29

This is a new discussion Lucca just as there are several discussion about H&M ?

Yes, but also there was a lot of comparison in the other thread too. I never saw that thread so never posted.

Lucca Tue 25-May-21 14:50:28

How is it new ? It’s identical to the other one.

Pretty soon GN will just be a few threads on the same thing with slightly different wording

Eg. What’s your favourite pudding ?

I like apple pie best, do you ?

My husband prefers crumble but I like a pie

Apple flan or Apple pie ?

Tarte aux pommes or Bramley shortcrust pie?
