I work with a lovely lady, but..... she eats and munches all day long, when she isn't eating, she is muttering to herself, drumming the desk or whistling. All her snacks are wrapped in copious layers of foil, as soon as I hear the foil rustling my back goes up, I find her so disruptive and irritating. I like her, but hate working with her. I have gone to my manager, she just laughs.......... This colleague has been off for a couple of weeks, coming back on Monday. I am dreading it.

I feel for you, Fflaurie- it's difficult when you are stuck with someone in a small office, isn't it?. Could you wear noise cancelling earphones, or do you have a role with the public which prevents that? Could you move into a different office or separate the desks with a partition?
I used to work with an irritating colleague who drove everyone up the wall. She rarely stopped talking and making a racket - in fact you could hear her bracelets rattling as she approached! Impossible to work with.
If her work isn't up to scratch then that's different, but personal styles of working can clash. I wish I could help with better suggestions.

Just ignore it.

You have not told us your work situation. Is it Just the 2 of you in a small room?

The lady sounds as if she is happy in her work and therefore the problem is yours alone to solve. What did you expect your manager to do?

Some of us have to live 24/7 with spouses who have such irritating habits and found ways to cope. Ear plugs? Buy her a big lunchbox to obviate the need for tinfoil?

So long as she isn't tempting you by offering chocolate biscuits, you will have to learn to ignore it.

Fflaurie I don't have any ideas to help you over this problem but just posting to say you have my sympathy, I too find odd noises very irritating even when I know I'm being unreasonable. At the library I use one of the librarians has a jangly anklet and as she walks around I start to get agitated and on days that she is working I choose my books very quickly and run. Ridiculous I know and it must be even worse when you have to dread it every day and the situation becomes larger and larger in one's mind. I hope someone comes along with an ingenious solution for you.
