The news article is here

I heard something about it this morning. This seemed to highlight the problems of 6th Form colleges because the funding has changed to per head but that must affect FE colleges too.

If that sounds as if I know what I am talking about but I don't really. Why do the government want to do this? Do they want all education to go through schools?

FE colleges have been discriminated against for years in funding terms. Sixth Form Colleges did rather better when they were funded like school 6th forms but it sounds as though the government has decided to level the playing field in such a way that everyone's worse off. Schools with 6th forms have to have specialist rooms, staff and facilities anyway so money from under-16s is available for the general pot. The interviewee on Today this morning also mentioned VAT which schools don't have to pay and the fact that insurance is paid for schools. Seems extremely capricious to squeeze post-16 and raise the age of compulsory education at the same time! Neither Labour nor the Coalition did good to FE so I'm not just having a go at the Tories. I don't think many of our masters came up through the FE route.
