Ban on in-work benefits

I understand that the powers-that-be want to deter immigrants from thinking that Britain is a 'soft-touch' re welfare/benefits, but surely if we accept people to live and build their lives here, we should not be creating a social underclass by depriving them of a basic standard of living through with-holding in-work benefits. Isn't that a prescription for imposing poverty and encouraging criminal activity? How are they expected to manage?

I thought the idea was they would be eligible for benefits once they had worked long enough to pay in?

That seems eminently fair to me. After all I have lived and worked here for nearly 50 years but last time i was made redundant I couldn't claim JSA because I was missing a months stamps from the claiming year as I had been unemployed at that time.
