Nana You are lovely. smile

Notsogrand Wed 12-Sept-12 12:44:15

Talk of Autumn and Ella's vests reminded me of liberty bodices grin

Nanadogsbody Wed 12-Sept-12 12:48:03

soop thank you, that's such a nice thing to say.

soop Wed 12-Sept-12 12:53:32

Notso I wore a liberty bodice as a child. It had a soft, snug lining and I seem to remember wee rubber buttons. What were they for? confused

Anagram Wed 12-Sept-12 12:56:54

I wore them too! Those little rubber buttons....
I think they were just to keep you warm?

harrigran Wed 12-Sept-12 13:36:31

If the rubber buttons were on the hem of the liberty bodice they were for attaching suspenders, to keep up those long woollen socks.

Anagram Wed 12-Sept-12 13:37:31

No, mine were down the front.

JO4 Wed 12-Sept-12 13:38:17

Yes I wore liberty bodices. They made the pile of clothes on the chair look so big. No wonder I never would get up in the mornings.

I seem to remember they had slots in them for putting bendy bone (?) strips in. A bit like "stays". Luckily, by the time I wore them, that had gone out of fashion and it was just for extra warmth.

harrigran Wed 12-Sept-12 13:39:04

Rubber buttons didn't break when the washing went through the mangle, unlike my dad's shirt buttons, they used to pop off frequently.

Bags Wed 12-Sept-12 14:12:08

Just staggering in with some bread and honey and a cup of tea. 'Zorsted' after more hedging before the showers come. I think I might have achey arms tomorrow. Hey ho.

[Slumps in corner with legs stretched out]

BTW, has anyone seen anything of jess lately?

soop Wed 12-Sept-12 14:41:14

harri that's right. And, Jings, I remember the slots for stays or maybe they were reinforcements to keep the wearer from slouching. All such a long time ago...along with itchy navy blue knickers and sensible lisle stockings. hmm

Showers here between sunny spells, Bags Like the sound of bread and honey.

Mr soop very busy in the loft. Who'd have thought that drainage could be so exciting. grin

Marelli Wed 12-Sept-12 14:59:03

My liberty bodice had little rubber buttons and fastened down the front. My mother called it a Peter Pan - I think that was the make (?) Can anyone remember the wee 'bones' that were put in the collars of your school blouses to make them sit straight?

soop Wed 12-Sept-12 15:19:12

Marelli Peter Pan was a brand name. The wee bones that were put into collars would, with constant use, have a tendency to go out of shape. With that, one side of the collar would stick out at an angle, or worse, dig into the neck.

JO4 Wed 12-Sept-12 15:22:39

I can remember when I used to do hard work in the garden like that Bags. When/why did I get lazy? Good feeling isn't it, when it's finished. smile

I've been wondering about jess.

gracesmum Wed 12-Sept-12 15:25:12

Isn't she on holiday?

soop Wed 12-Sept-12 15:25:25

Do you remember having your feet [when buying new shoes] Xrayed? Was that good thing or not?

soop Wed 12-Sept-12 15:31:13

Sorry if I've wandered from the point of the thread by mentioning Xrays. And yes, I think that jess is on holiday.

Ella46 Wed 12-Sept-12 15:52:57

Nanadog I've not even got my winter fuel allowance yet and you're trying to take it off me!!!

soop my nose is cold at the end too! How odd? Glad to know that I'm not in a minority group though! grin

I used to wear a liberty bodice and also a pair of combinations which had a great gap down the back at the bottom (thank goodness!)

Anagram Wed 12-Sept-12 16:00:34

No! Combinations Ella? You poor thing! grin

soop Wed 12-Sept-12 16:03:28

ella The mind boggles. Was your liberty bodice combination designed something like the old fashioned drawers with an open gusset? Must have been chilly when a north-easterly was blowing. shock

JO4 Wed 12-Sept-12 16:06:22

They don't allow those x-ray machines now do they?

I loved having mine done. Seeing all the bones!

soop Wed 12-Sept-12 16:10:22

Me too. It was the best bit about shopping for shoes. Think such gadgets have been outlawed.

Ella46 Wed 12-Sept-12 16:13:24

soop yes along those lines! blush

Ana, you're just jealous! grin

Ella46 Wed 12-Sept-12 16:16:27

Actually, just remembered that I only narrowly escaped wearing clogs too!

We used to live in a mill town! hmm Mum wouldn't hear of it!

soop Wed 12-Sept-12 16:21:25

Ana someone is taking your name in vain in Lil's bar. grin
