Junk food warnings-"not for young children"

I recently watched a woman open a packet of salt and vinegar Monster Munch and hand it to a child in a buggy who must have been 18 months to 2 years old, who was obviously used to this and started eating. Apart from the damage to her developing taste buds the amount of salt and fat she consumed must have been health threatening. When I buy toys some have a warniing "Not suitable for children under the age of 3". Why can't the same warning be put on junk foods and fizzy drinks? Children might then eat better as they grow up.

Fish and chips - Back to Basics!

Perhaps the Monster Munches were a once-a-week treat.
I do think about chocolate quite a lot, that's why I don't buy it very often.

Does anyone remember those bags of crisps with a blue twist of salt?

Yes. I liked those cos you could use just a little. There was always more than I needed. We had crisps on birthdays, not because my parents disapproved of them (well, if they did, they never said) but because they couldn't afford them as well as our usual food.

I sometimes had a bag of crisps if I went to the cinema. I don't remember having them very often.

Smiths Crisps with the blue twist of salt (it was usually soggy!). I never used it, just ate the crisps as they were.

It was only later in life that I acquired a taste for salt which is with me still, unfortunately...

I used to suck all the salt from the little blue bag separately.....

For some reason I also used to glug vinegar from the bottle when noone was around. I'm starting to think I was a bit of an odd child. grin

Just remembered I occasionally spent some of my pocket money on a packet of potato 'pillows'. They had addable salt too and were my favourite crisps. Does anyone else remember those?

TerriBull Tue 05-May-15 19:46:11

Just loved those Smiths crisps with the small blue twist of salt when I was a child, they were a very occasional treat, I don't remember anyone being at all concerned about the salt factor or the fat content. Then again kids weren't sedentary, we were always running around and television was strictly rationed.

Ana Tue 05-May-15 19:49:25

They sound a bit like the Potato Puffs I used to like, thatbags, but those didn't have addable salt. Sometimes you'd bite one and it would have a pool of cold cooking oil in it - horrible!

Woman in chip shop today: "Salt and vinegar?" Me: "Yes please. Lots". blush

Another famous bullying tactic- diversion and ridicule. Spot on.

Nought wrong with fish and chips once in a while, and malt vinegar is great too- but perhaps NOT for 18 months old. We did give ours bits of fish at that age from our own fish and chips, and a few chips too- once in a while. Nought wrong...as part of an otherwise balanced diet.

For those of you who are interested in this subject but can't be arsed to read through all the bumph, there is a documentary film on Netflix called 'Fed up'
The word 'fed' is obviously a play on 'food'
Absolutely brilliant.
If there are two facts I took away from it, they were: if there's a word on the label that you can't pronounce: it's sugar.
The other fact. The WHO (not the group) did a report where it slammed the USA concerning sugar. The USA told the WHO " If you don't remove that part of the report, we will withhold the $460,000,000 we pay to you. Says it all.

I am finding this site very baffling.

There seem to be subtexts, and back issues, sub plots. And diversions?
I dont have a clue what is going on sometimes.

petra Tue 05-May-15 20:50:56

Soontobe. Do you mean this site or this thread. If it's this thread, I must be missing something.

soontobe Tue 05-May-15 20:55:46

The site in general.

Ana Tue 05-May-15 20:58:04

I don't think this thread is the place to discuss your concerns, soontobe.

soontobe Tue 05-May-15 21:00:24

True Ana.

granjura Tue 05-May-15 21:03:47

Is it the place to be rude and sarcastic and mock- or discuss what you had for dinner - or about giving totaly unsuitable foods to 18 months old?

I did think, it was the latter and tried hard to stick to it in a polite manner.

RedheadedMommy Tue 05-May-15 21:25:27

My DD , has a packet of crisps whilst she is in her pushchair. She is 21 months. It keeps her happy while I do my shopping. I don't think it's fair that the mum in the post has been judged so harshly! You've seen a snippet from her day.

I could of been that mum. What you wouldn't of seen is the porridge she has for breakfast, the pasta with pesto and cucumber chunks she had for lunch.

As a whole, children do need a balanced diet, but that child is probley having one.

Btw. I didn't know salt and viniger monster much was a thing? I remember the ones that turned your young blue grin

Ana Tue 05-May-15 21:26:21

Threads wander, granjura, you must know that.

You did indicate yesterday that you were leaving the discussion, but you came back and repeated your advice and opinions. Which is fine, but it seems that you will not be happy until everyone agrees with you...

RedheadedMommy Tue 05-May-15 21:26:30

tounge blue. Sorry auto correct!

rosesarered Tue 05-May-15 21:53:54

I agree , junk food is food, we should eat it but not every day.Common sense is not so common, but applied to food, would be a very good thing.
There is endless promotion here in the UK about healthy eating, so it's not lack of it if Mothers feed unhealthy foodstuffs to their children all the time, probably more laziness than anything else. All things in moderation, including chocs and crisps is fine. There is so much labelling on food nowadays that we can't complain of ignorance as to what is in it.My DC had a sandwich in their lunchbox along with a piece of fruit, a small choc biscuit like a penguin bar, and now and again some crisps. they all have perfect teeth and are slim.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 05-May-15 21:53:59

confused I didn't give any of my fish and chips to any 18 month old. I don't have an eighteen month old.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 05-May-15 21:55:12

I'm not sure I'm keeping on top of this thread.

rosesarered Tue 05-May-15 21:58:37

redheadedmommy I liked the phrase " turns your young blue!"

rosesarered Tue 05-May-15 21:59:35

The only thing this thread is doing for me is making me very hungry.
