Outrageous ageism at the toddler singalong!!

I have been laughing at this, and I am not actually offended, but this incident deserves sharing, I think smile
I took my toddler grandson to a storytime/singalong event (I won't say where, so as to protect the guilty!). One of the songs was 'Wheels on the Bus' and the organiser led the singing through what the doors did, what the bell did and so on, in the usual way.
Then he started on a bus about what the grannies on the bus do.
'The grannies on the bus all smell of wee, smell of wee, smell of wee....'

!!!!!

I was sitting right in front of him (not smelling of wee, as far as I know smile ), and I don't think the verse was actually directed at me...but I was rather taken aback at this. Talk about tactless, agist and not a very nice lesson for the little ones in the group!

Oh, it was a bookshop. Have they got a Twitter account? We could 'deal' with them. smile

Lots of posts smile

Seems I need to defend myself??

I was looking after my grandson all day yesterday then went out to dinner and the theatre, so no opportunity to respond.

This did happen,I assure people.

In detail: singer asks each time for suggestions from the audience for verses ie wheels, then bell, then wipers, then driver. Conversation went like this:

Singer: "ok, what's next?"

Audience (or one or two children, or mothers/fathers): "grannies"

Snger: "ok, what do they do?"

Audience: silence

Singer: "nothing?"

Audience: silence

Singer: "ok....lets say they smell of wee.."

And he launched into the verse.

It is ridiculous and of course he was rude, but a lot of his style was poor - asides to the adults throughout and so on.

There were no organisers to complain to. He was the organiser, one of the owners of the bookshop where the session was held, but I gather not the usual one who lead the session.

Or possibly driving their sports cars at breakneck speed and overtaking the bus.
This young (?) man needs to be taken down a peg or three. I think I might have been tempted to 'out' this organiser in a letter to the local press, or even invited an undercover reporter to visit the next event with me.

Or the government had withdrawn their bus passes.

Greenfinch Fri 15-May-15 23:10:16

grin

merlotgran Fri 15-May-15 23:08:03

Ha Ha, Greenfinch That's because they were all on Dial A Ride grin

Greenfinch Fri 15-May-15 23:06:22

There were no grannies on the bus !

Soutra Fri 15-May-15 23:03:07

Having come to this late, I too think it is highly offensive and I don't care if the play leader was smiling or swinging from the lampshade. It is not funny, it is downright rude, let's not let him off with "ageist", but say what it is, "bl**dy rude* and entirely inappropriate.
I think the event should have been named and shamed and I cannot see how OP could have found it amusing, even if she feels she doesn't "offend", it could be totally offensive to other elderly people and it is not helpful to poke fun at grandparents. Full stop.

Ana Fri 15-May-15 22:54:37

And I seem to be defending posters who should be defending themselves!

Must be something in the water (I blame the government again...grin)

merlotgran Fri 15-May-15 22:43:07

In that case I apologize if I'm wrong.

I've been a grumpy bunny today.

Ana Fri 15-May-15 22:32:47

Well, as I've said on another thread it's not likely to be a wind-up when the OP is an established poster.

merlotgran Fri 15-May-15 22:26:46

This thread could of course be a wind up. hmm

Don't think you should complain. Get together a small group of grannies and their DGCs and teach them all the words are "The Grannies on the bus all smile at me". Then take them along to the next session and sing VERY LOUDLY at the same time fixing the organiser with a deadly stare. Bet he changes his tune (sorry words) !

I'm not sure what's unclear to you, Jomarie.

Jomarie Fri 15-May-15 21:17:37

Sorry - meant to say "toddler GS" - oops Freudian slip??? wine

Jomarie Fri 15-May-15 21:16:24

I'm with the majority here - it is unacceptable (although I can well imagine my toddler son - newly potty trained - finding it very funny to imagine Granny smelling of wee ) however, I'm not sure - having read the posts - as to whether the toddler came up with this or the organiser of the sing-a-long sang it? Makes a difference between complaining about the organiser or talking to toddler's Mum and Dad quietly. Or am I being unreasonable/stupid ????

GrannyTwice Fri 15-May-15 20:50:27

Best not ask!

absent Fri 15-May-15 20:49:13

I hesitate to ask but I think we should be told. What exactly was the action the children were taught to accompany this egregious line of the song?

Nelliemoser Fri 15-May-15 19:51:36

That is worth a complaint about the organiser. I had not read it right to start with and wondered if it was something a small child had heard from an older sibling. Not acceptable at all.

GrannyTwice Fri 15-May-15 19:13:53

Rq- -grin

rosequartz Fri 15-May-15 19:02:40

Perhaps the organiser was French?
grannies all say oui?

Anyway, it's a non from me.

missdeke Fri 15-May-15 18:59:50

Thank you Granny Twice and Ana, I should have checked first! grin

Ana Fri 15-May-15 18:56:16

(should have been a ? after the first one!)

Ana Fri 15-May-15 18:55:48

AIBU = Am I Being Unreasonable

YABU = You Are Being Unreasonable

GrannyTwice Fri 15-May-15 18:54:48

I've been thinking a bit more - if I'm honest I'm beginning to have doubts about this. I find it so impossible to believe that anyone at an organised singalong/ storytelling would sing this. Elena- are you sure you heard properly? Did the organiser have a strong accent and you could have misheard?
