Calling hulking great husbands 'Babe'.

Lessons being learned when they're not.

And, I fear this may make me unpopular, people who refer to themselves as their dog/cats mummy or daddy.

Can I get, as in can I get a cup of coffee? Absolutely drives me mad!
Yet another Americanism. Whatever happened to, "please may I have?"

Eloethan Wed 18-Nov-15 01:02:12

"Your call is important to us" (when you've been hanging on the phone for ages listening to horrible music)

"I'm good" (in reply to "how are you?")

"Don't worry, I'm not trying to sell you something" (they are)

"I love him/her to bits"

Grandma2213 Wed 18-Nov-15 01:38:30

I hate most of the above no matter how hard I try not to care as after all, the language is continuously evolving.

I do especially hate 'a rollercoaster of emotions' and those who say 'amount of' rather than 'number of' eg 'The amount of animals set free ....'

Back in the day

daffydil Wed 18-Nov-15 11:04:48

To be honest - I always want to say 'Are you usually dishonest?' Tony
Blair was a great one for saying this.

Absolutely instead of yes please when offered, say, a cup of tea.

barbaralynne Wed 18-Nov-15 11:05:02

I get called my "dog's mummy" - I really do not agree that I am a bitch!!

Indinana Wed 18-Nov-15 11:45:25

the phrase 'forever home' came into usage when adoption workers used it to help young children understand their final move (to adopters) as being 'forever'. It's now been widely adopted (excuse the pun) by animal charities.
Thanks Grannyactivist, that makes sense and the phrase is completely understandable in its original context.
Still hate it when used for pets, though - after all, it's not being used for the pets' benefit, but for the would be adopters, who don't need to have the situation so sensitively phrased!

rosequartz Wed 18-Nov-15 12:07:16

Hey you guys - back in the day speech was never like it is at this moment in time - like.

rosequartz Wed 18-Nov-15 12:08:31

And what does 'Breaking Bad' mean?

gettingonabit Wed 18-Nov-15 12:12:56

All of the above, particularly the use of adjectives as nouns as in "your best beautiful", find your happy" etc. And I'm glad I'm not the only one who objects to being called a "guy". Hate groups of children being called "guys" too.

My particular pet hate which hasn't been mentioned yet afaik is the word "source" in the context of "look for". Particularly on those rather pretentious cookery/design television programmes. It's no longer enough, it seems, to just go out and buy something, or google it on amazon. It has to be "sourced" as if acquiring something is a spectacularly clever skill. (unlike popping to the supermarket, lobbing said item in the trolley and whizzing it through the checkout, which is what most of us do).

Arggh!

If you must use "sayings" please get them right!

The proof is NOT in the pudding!!!
