Being one of the 'lucky' BB generation, I worked since I was 15 until the retirement age of 60 ......when my first husband left my then 6 year old daughter and I, I sold the house (worked for a divorce lawyer, and told him I was taking the lot ...he said I was not entitled to do that ..............lsl, I did) but to pay the mortgage off I had to sell it and move more than 250 miles away so I could afford to buy a new house outright for my daughter and I. I worked in so many jobs I once wrote a list ....I think I must have had more than 28 temp. jobs before working full time in the NHS when my daughter was old enough to go home from school alone .....well, not alone, but with two schoolfriends whose mothersa also worked. It was a struggle at times, but by going without a lot of things, we managed. My daughter went to Uni for a longer time than usual (different degrees, LLb, MSc, etc etc and I paid off her student loan, bank overdraft, car, etc etc when my own father died and left my brother and I a small inheritance We even managed our first ever holiday that wasn't a week in Bridlington at a friend's caravan for £50 (nice as Brid is !)......I had a total of £20 a week for food after paying bills, travel costs, packed lunches, etc and any costs for school trips etc ...............Now, after I ran out of money, my d no longer speaks to me ....I cannot afford to give money any longer.
Sadly, (I say sadly as no one really wants a relatively young relative to die) I have now been left an inheritance that is worth a lot (will have a lot to pay in IT to the taxman !) but no one except me will be told. Some of it is going to go to charities, and other clubs, etc of interest to the deceased, and some to friends of his who have been loyal all his life, and then we will see what happens to the rest....I may move, and enjoy the only time in my life I may have some money to do what I want with and when I make my Will I will have to consider long and hard whether I leave anything to my daughter...I only know where she is (or was) from the internet although do have her NI number so she could be traced I suppose. If not, then it will go to charities that my relative supported, again.
I would think long and hard about ER......I found an interesting option online .....cannot recall what the name of it is, but is is a scheme that enables you to move into a house or flat, etc, for virtually half its value if you are over a certain age ,,,,,the price goes down according to your age when you buy into the property ....Home reversion plan, or something like that it is called ....could not believe what it available ...retirement flats, lovely bungalows, small houses .....what a wonderful scheme ! Not sure what the criteria is apart from age ...I think you must have been a UK resident for a while...try googling Retirement house buying options and may be the scheme will come up.
If you do decide on ER DO NOT tell anyone .......leave them something in your Will (If there is anything left !) but it is no ones business but yours at the end of the day ....
