AIBU to think this is totally unnecessary?

I understand that it is hot and there is a heatwave and all that but is it really necessary to do your shopping in the high street while topless? I am talking about a man, I think we might all agree that a woman topless in a high street would be inappropriate. But queueing in the post office and supermarket with a man wearing only shorts and flip flops (and shorts pulled down rather low at that) just feels wrong. Do what you want in the garden or even the park. But in the high street should we not cover up a bit? What's appropriate for sunbathing or the beach doesn't make it right to go to the bank etc

Mr P is the most modest of chaps, and has never been seen in public without a top on, not even when cutting the grass in our own garden!

However, before I paint him as a picture of saintliness, he does have a rather disconcerting habit of not using a belt when wearing the trousers he favours for any gardening or DIY activities blush

bluegal lol. hilarious. so embarrassing for him. what an idiot.
Nixon I totally agree. Why do somee men think its ok to walk around topless. Its just wrong- especially if they have hairy armpits. yuk!

Bathsheba Wed 27-Jun-18 23:33:23

It really turns my stomach to see these jelly-bellied men flashing their ivory coloured flab in public. And oh yuk, I totally agree about the sweaty, hairy armpits. Seriously, why do they think anyone wants to see this? Fine in the privacy of your own house and garden, or at the beach. But definitely not walking through the town centre, or round Sainsbury.
Come on men, put it away - we do not want to see it! though I doubt any of them will read this thread grin

Bathsheba; I do! All the time, in the interests of science of course! grin
But: "Not Guilty" your honour. It's not the right season anyway. Too damn cold! sad
Cheers and keep warm.

I too have read this thread, Bathsheba. Your name suggests a predilection for immodest bathing, and at least in the pictures I have seen King David is respectably covered up.

It's not just men with no shirts, either. Ninety per cent of the men I see in shorts look pretty dreadful, too. And t-shirts are a big mistake whenever (and it's often) the waist measurement exceeds that of the chest. In fact I blush for my sex during every hot spell - the mature male equivalent of a hot flush?

patriciageegee Thu 28-Jun-18 10:05:35

Years ago in Italy it was actually a criminal offence for men to walk around topless - I don't know if that's still the case but it definitely should be both there and here?!

Coconut Thu 28-Jun-18 10:07:44

Apart from the topless aspect .... there are many women too walking around in this heat who I question if they have mirrors in their houses. Not many of us have perfect bodies, but surely we want to cover our worst bits up and enhance the good bits ! Altho I suppose you have to admire their confidence in just not caring !!

Overthehills Thu 28-Jun-18 10:10:27

Am agreement with all who say “cover up”! I especially don’t like waitresses serving me in vest tops - I don’t want underarms (hairy or otherwise) with my meal. Yuck!

dollyjo Thu 28-Jun-18 10:11:55

NantheWiser yggdrasil!
I may be showing my ignorance but I didn't know what that means so I looked it up.
It is from Norse mythology and is a large Ash tree.
What has that got to do with this topic? Or does it mean something else too.

Lolly69 Thu 28-Jun-18 10:12:44

Gosh some awful sights conjured up here. So glad it’s not just me - sits with middle aged men in Lycra who populate the lanes near me on a Sundayhmm

maddyone Thu 28-Jun-18 10:13:23

Totally agree Nixon, I absolutely hate seeing men topless in the street, or anywhere apart the obvious ie beach, swimming pool, garden (not even keen on that really.) In a shop or supermarket, ugh comes to mind. Loathe it I’m afraid!

jenpax Thu 28-Jun-18 10:14:00

Coconut I am so anxious about covering up bingo wings and stomach ? that last time we were in Paris and temperatures exceeded 35%C I nearly passed out because I would not shed my long sleeved black (over tee shirt) house coat thing? I told my disbelieving family that I would rather pass out than show my flabby arms??

I would be quite happy if it was Poldark but I would rather not see a Rab C Nesbitt.
We are all supposed to be equal these days so maybe I will take mine off in Iceland for a cool down. On second thoughts not a pretty sight. At 62 gravity has set in a bit.

Bijou Thu 28-Jun-18 10:25:58

In Lanzarote a taxi driver refused to take two bare chested men.
Last week I saw a very pregnant woman baring her bump!

Theoddbird Thu 28-Jun-18 10:33:04

Totally agree...no flesh on show. Supermarkets should put signs up saying no. I did see a sign in a shop window a couple of years ago saying 'no pjs'.....

granma47 Thu 28-Jun-18 10:33:52

At granddaughters sports day it was noted that some men had removed their tops but the head teacher requested that as they were on school grounds all tops must be worn.

anitamp1 Thu 28-Jun-18 10:39:25

Agree with you Nixon. I've also seen shirtless men out and about recently. Acceptable for the beach, garden or building site, but not public places. Not attractive and not nice to have to stand behind in a queue. But many people don't seem to know how to dress appropriately. I recently saw someone ordering Chinese takeaway in her pyjamas. Another day, a large lady with a pair of very thinly stretched leggings/tights which were completely see through and we were all treated to the sight of her tiny thong.

mabon1 Thu 28-Jun-18 10:43:11

I don't want to see male or female flesh. I walk the dog on a path above the beach and some of these men look dreadful, pot vellies and man boobs - disgusting.

Lupin Thu 28-Jun-18 10:50:35

Topless or scantily clad blokes in food stores or on public transport ( particularly when the only seat left is next to them and particularly when they have a lot of body hair) has long been something I hate to see and refuse to sit next to come to that. The same would go for females I guess.
Yesterday a young girl wearing a loose crop top over a generous bust got on the bus. She was exposing rather more than was wise and those sitting and looking up got a generous eyeful.

Mads Thu 28-Jun-18 11:02:32

Trouble is they think they look wonderful. Socks and sandals, four cornered hankies on head, flipflops, bare chests, Yuk!!

Legs55 Thu 28-Jun-18 11:05:34

Bluegal your comment reminded me of my friend who when they had the builders in discovered that one of the young men didn't wear underpants under his shorts, she spent a lot of time in the garden walking past the ladder he was working ongrin.

I too dislike shirtless men shopping also young and not so young women wearing clothes more suitable for the beach, as for exposed baby bumps YUK, we can see what a clever woman you are carrying that precious bundle but please cover uphmm

I favour knee length, smart shorts & a nice top in this weathersmile

nixon YANBU! I don't know what we can do about it though, unless shops put up the signs asking people to wear tops.
I have a gardener, although gardening is my joy, now I am disabled, I cannot manage it alone. Only once, on an unusually hot Spring day, he tapped the kitchen window and asked me very politely if I would mind if he took off his top as he had worn a rather heavy one by mistake, not realising how hot the weather was to become. I was very impressed by his courtesy. That is the only way a man should discard his top, unless he is at a beach or swimming pool. Why can't we raise people to have manners like my Gardener? He's in his late 30s btw.

Aepgirl Thu 28-Jun-18 11:09:52

On a recent holiday in Malta, a young Maltese man got on the bus without a top on (him, not the bus!). The driver, very politely, asked him to put his top on 'because visitors to our island do not wish to see your body on the bus'. The top was put on with no argument.
