AIBU to think this is totally unnecessary?

Why don't such people realise that it is cooler to wear a loose garment than strip off? when going out in the heat I wear a sleeveless long dress with a loose white linen shirt over the top - its much cooler with the shirt on than off. People who live in hot countries like India tend to wear loose fitting cotton clothes.

Businesses should just refuse to serve people who are not appropriately dressed.

since the 60s in the usa all businesses and public buildings(banks,groceries etc) have signs up that say
"no shirts,no shoes,no service"of course being the obnoxious teens we were we would inquire if we could go pantless...
disney world has to enforce this constantly especially with the european tourists.

We used to have a middle aged chap in Cornwall (an educated man who organised various events) who spent most of the year in exceptionally short shorts. Bits were always popping out but he never seemed to notice. We always felt very embarrassed for his poor wife.

The worst showing of flesh I ever saw came one Saturday when we were coming out of an Aldi shop in a city not far from where we live in Scotland. A man was putting his shopping into his car boot, wearing a kilt in true Scottish style. All I could see were his dangly bits! It really wasn't a pretty sight and I hope no youngsters caught sight of him or they could have been traumatised for life. He must have had either an awful low boot or his kilt was too short!

Even tho’ both top and bottom are nominally covered, I’m not a fan of crop-tops and ‘booty’ shorts - you know, the ones where the bum-cheeks hang out below the hem of the shorts.
It’s not a particularly good look even on the young and lissom, but yesterday I saw this outfit on a middle-aged lady who must have been topping 18 stones. She wasn’t even wearing a bra.
I know it’s her body and her right to wear whatever she feels good in. Unfortunately, I think many people had to go home and bleach their eyeballs after viewing all the goods!

Hi pension pat yes I've just had a biopsy on my nose and have to go back next mon for treatment. We were just on holiday in lanzarote and I saw all the brit's with tops off and I don't agree when your having a meal the natives didn't and it shows lack of respect. Got the Metro yesterday it was jam packed and so many blokes of all ages were topless. Some were white, some had red shoulders and some had red bits aand white bits. I suppose it's patriotic. But I wanted to scream "Put your tops on and FFS buy some suncream!!!!!"

We live close to Southend-on-Sea, and DS and family live one road back from beach in Shoeburyness the sights that are out and about are quiet shocking. Some Male and Females are definitely lacking in style the minute the sun comes out!!!??????

Before you get to the "tarring and feathering" stage (ouch!) a study of this thread has not revealed any opinions on the merits or demerits of the art of tattooing.
Would torso tattoos enhance or detract from your viewing experience?
Included here are the cute tattoo cameos often seen around the"crack" when the owner (often a Tradie) is bending or squatting whilst working.
Given the broad canvas with which some tattoo artists
can practice their art I can imagine some spectacular murals.
It doesn't require much imagination.
Plenty of material here for any PhD aspirants!

I don,t care to see this but as we live near the sea it's quite a common sight. Acceptable enough on the beach itself, but so many of them come right away from the beach into the high street to do some shopping still minus a top. Some of the shorts are quite debatable as well! I can,t bear to see men in those shorts that come halfway down their calves ...usually worn with socks and trainers , talk about a sight for sore eyes ? just look like overgrown toddlers to my mind. Please don't let me see anymore today please!!

I think you are right. It is all right at home in the garden or at the seaside/similar sort of place but not if you're going to enter shops, public buildings or restaurants. I think a lot of places would ask men to put on a top.

I agree with the large majority. Shirts on. It appears acceptable in seaside villages/towns, but we should have common decency respect not to mention our own values and morals. However I don’t think it should turn in to a gender discussion as then the topic loses momentum. I have been to many meetings, attendind open forums and work related discussions where the main topic being discussed gets totally lost with too many comparisons. Why are females permitted to wear singlets in clubs and men are not, some licensed clubs and up market hotels permit females to wear caps and men are not, the comparison and list goes on and in. Some couples have arguments then bounce from one issue to another then forget what the initial discussion was or more to the point.. the reason why they sat down in the first place was never resolved. This is not a gender discussion it is more about decency public respect and courtesy. Thank you.

I agree - tops on for everyone when not on the beach. If you do feel strongly about it, write to your local newspaper/council/go on the website of your shop - and ask them to make it plain topless humans are offensive! Just been on European holiday and everyone coming off the beaches put tops on, male and female, and shorts over swimsuits.

I too live near the sea. Wear what you want on the beach, but please, I wish men with bellies similar to a heavily pregnant woman would not wander round town with no tops or shirts with only one button done up.

I think it’s because we don’t get enough sun (usually!) that the minute we do, common sense and a sense of shame, in some cases goes out of the window.

lemongrove I think my DH would take your “I wish everyone would wear more clothes when out and about” seriously. He already wears shirt and jacket whatever the weather and that includes the beach! he doesn’t “do” casual?

jenpax my father was just like your DH and always wore his jacket, shirt and tie and his summer flannels in hot weather and on the beach! He was ever the gentleman and the ladies all loved him.

I live at the seaside too now and on display at various places are pictures of old days in the resort...on the beach men all seem to have suits and ties on but am thinking your DH can't be that old? I get the feeling in the 40's and 50's it was the correct way to dress?

No you are right Bluegal? DH is in his 50’s he is just very formal??‍♀️ My late father was the same and had to be prised into casual clothes except for gardening where he had “gardening clothes”?

Synonymous, my father too! His attire on the beach would be laughable today, but then it was exactly how you describe your father. Plus the straw hat, of course! I don’t think you could buy casual wear then, anyway. “Leisure wear” became an industry much later on. I think I wore similar clothes all the time - dresses with full skirts, etc. but I did wear a “bathing costume” on the beach and I did wear shorts. I’m glad we have comfortable clothes now but agree that swimwear needs to stay on the beach.

It's not just men, though, is it? I see so many women baring flesh that would be far better covered up. Shoestring tops when you have great, fat, bingo-wings arms, are really not a pretty sight.
