Perhaps by the choice of response Mabon1 hopes to inject a sour note into the thread and reduce everyone else's enjoyment of the conversation to his/her own low level?

I've noticed that Mabon1 only ever posts one short, sharp usually negative post on each thread; never actually entering into any discussion; almost like a cameo appearance. I've become quote fond of Mabon1 now! Once I've spotted the usual sour note, I shout BINGO!

I've no business being all mealy mouthed about it, really, because I'm guilty of being judgemental myself (see Red Rum comment!)

Have come full circle here reading MissAdventure’s post. She obviously put it so much better than I did!

So we questioned why these poor people go on that show , I question those who watch it , if viewing figures were low surely the programme would stop being aired

Perhaps some people watch the programme because its so far outside of their own world, or life experiences, that it's a fascination with how other people live their lives. It's not necessarily a judgemental thing; but perhaps an anthropological interest? Big Brother is often car crash tv and frequently made uncomfortable viewing but, until very recently, it offered an interesting insight into human behaviour.

Chewbacca I cannot compare the programmes, surely the people on the Kyle programme ,which I have only watched once, so distressing, are not on the programme hoping to be a winner by getting the most public votes ?

I was once approched by researchers for this programme and invited to be attached as a therapist for post programme support. I hadn’t seen the programme. I watched over a week and declined the (lucrative) invitation as in my view vulnerable people (and we are all vulnerable at times) were being exploited and potentially harmed in the name of entertainment. I haven’t changed my opinion which of course is just that, not a fact, in this case I hope I’m wrong.

Hmmm, maybe you're right Annie, but they're all going on the programme for either their "15 minutes of fame", or a chance to win £££££'s. As someone further up thread said, for some people, just being on tv with the offer of an all expenses trip and overnight hotel, would be enough to lure them on. I can't judge them either way.

I agree with your viewpoint on these people who appear on the JK show. I have seen families similar to this and think....there for the grace of .....etc.
We all come into this world with nothing, and cannot take anything with us when we leave it. However the life chances that we may be given or not have a very big part to play in the way our or lives pan out. Not everyone has a loving, supportive family and a lot of the problems these people show are inherited from generation to generation, perpetuating all the time often through ignorance and are learned behaviours. These sort of programmes highlight the disadvantaged people, but never do anything to really help or improve their lot.

I am anything but patronising sodapop so you really don’t know me at all. But if I have upset you I truly apologise. Being a “rough and ready” type myself (and ill bred according to someone on this very thread) it looks like I’ve said the wrong thing yet again. I suspect though that you know exactly what I meant but choose to twist it to suit your own means . It must be hard being so perfect.

And before I go, those rough and ready types, the kind of people who would give you their last, were my neighbours while I was growing up on a NE council estate Sodapop . They were my neighbours while I was a single parent and still my neighbours when I was a young widow.

I disagree. Whilst Jeremy Kyle goads the people on his programme, they are usually people who don't know who the father of their child is or workshy wasters who have drugs/alcohol problems. There is a never-ending supply of people like the ones on that show. It is a depressing indictment of all that is wrong with this country.

I don't watch it any more (I haven't seen it for years) as I cannot stand to hear all the shouting and carrying-on from them all.

I seem to have outgrown watching Jeremy.
I used to quite like settling down for a good slanging match in the mornings, but now I prefer 'Homes under the hammer'.
I suppose i'll eventually find that a bit manic and move on to 'Tipping point'.

You are joking...aren't you? Please say it's a joke. You'll be plagued by autograph hunters camping out on your lawn and ITV even TMZ film crews, their million watt lights showing up your movements in your bedroom and sound booms hitting your head every time you step outside. How inconsiderate of them to go on the show. You'll have passers-by rubbernecking and the postie lingering to catch a glimpse of 'them next door'.
