Am I alone in getting confused by all the references to DD, SiL, DGD etc? I just read a plea in another forum where I really could not work out who the poster was talking about.
It doesn't take much more work to type 'my husband' or 'my grandson' , or even 'my son-in-law's sister's daughter's child'.
But it does make the relationships obvious.

I get the part about acronyms, but what I don't get is why it has to be dear or darling in front of them ( retreats behind the sofa ? )

MissAdventure Sun 16-Dec-18 19:22:57

Me neither.
It sounds very twee if you say it out loud.

Chewbacca Sun 16-Dec-18 19:28:26

Just substitute darned/dreaded/dratted/damned?

BlueBelle Sun 16-Dec-18 21:15:49

Why?

MawBroon Sun 16-Dec-18 21:22:12

Why what?

I thought DH, DD, DDiL, DS etc were either affectionate, or said with irony through gritted teeth.
Makes it entertaining guessing which. Dear as a prefix can be seen in different ways...

tinaf1 Thu 20-Dec-18 13:38:35

Get what your saying SparklyGrandma but when it's a long post about different family members with loads of abbreviation I just look and then CBA ?

Farmor15 Thu 20-Dec-18 15:27:34

Agree with mcem who posted earlier in the thread that these are not acronyms but abbreviations. Gransnet should change the heading on list.

StillGame Thu 20-Dec-18 15:55:50

I think its telling that the in-law abbreviations never have the Dear/Darling in front of them whereas all the other relations do.

toscalily Thu 20-Dec-18 15:57:48

I do understand the abbreviations now but find all the darlings & dears extremely irritating. Do people actually prefix daughter, son, husband with dear & darling in real life? I certainly don't know anyone who does. I use words not abbreviations or acronyms in text messages too.

MawBroon Thu 20-Dec-18 16:09:05

Sigh
Don’t do it if you don’t want to.
If it is the convention of the site, live with it.

sodapop Thu 20-Dec-18 16:28:42

Yes we can do that Maw but I agree with tinafl a long post with a lot of these abbreviations is definitely off putting for me.

sodapop Thu 20-Dec-18 16:30:10

My previous post was deleted because I inadvertently mentioned a certain garment - sorry.
