Ok so part of the town is shut off due to protesters causing diversions and more traffic fumes. Also the majority probably don't use public transport or ride a bike to work. When the kids did it it was on a school day not a weekend. And you can bet they drive with parents to school, clubs, visit friends etc to say nothing about gap years later when they fly around the world. Also I'll bet a lot go on foriegn holidays and certainly not biking in the countryside. Also the mess left behind shows they don't care about the environment much either. Why protest in busy streets etc when we have a huge green outside our council buildings? Anyone else feel like this or am I just a miserable OAP
Thoughts?

EllanVannin yes, trees, we need more and more - and even more trees!

I saw a clip the other day, can't remember which programme it was, where a scientist is measuring the amount of carbon dioxide held in each tree in the Amazon rainforest. This rainforest is being eradicated at an alarming rate.

A tree can absorb as much as 48 pounds of carbon dioxide per year and can sequester 1 ton of carbon dioxide by the time it reaches 40 years old.
We can 'do our bit' - but will it make any difference when government policies such as those of Brazil, Indonesia encourage deforestation in order to grow crops - much of which is driven by big business who seem more powerful than governments?

When I was the age of this apparently remarkable grandson , I too went everywhere by bicycle or bus; I didn't have a boat to put sails on and certainly no prospect of a trip to the States. It would not have occurred to any of us to take school days off to protest about poverty, the issue of the time; we spent time working to raise money to do something, however small, to alleviate it. My leisure time was spent raising money via my church organisation to buy tractors to work on farms in Africa; our youth club raised enough money to buy one and a half tractors ourselves.
This grandson sounds spoilt and entitled to me.

Callistemon Mon 15-Jul-19 15:17:05

We never had a car.

I remember helping to buy tractors for farms in Africa too!

I'm sure he's not ^spoilt and entitled^; he's a thoughtful young man. If only he could come and sort out the youngsters who drop fast food litter and plastic bottles near here!

???

Gonegirl Mon 15-Jul-19 15:20:19

How do you work the spoilt bit our? ?

Pantglas1 Mon 15-Jul-19 15:23:58

I would respect the protesters more if they took home every bit of litter instead of leaving everywhere they looking like a tsunami has hit. Every festival/event they attend means a massive clear up after them - let them walk the talk!

sazz1 Mon 15-Jul-19 15:24:11

Great to see all the replies and that the majority agree with me

Gonegirl Mon 15-Jul-19 15:25:03

He's not in any way remarkable. He's a skinny little so and so with long untidy dark hair. He's a bit of a worrier , hence the ER thing.

Gonegirl Mon 15-Jul-19 15:26:55

ER leave no litter. They are very particular about that.

Gonegirl Mon 15-Jul-19 15:32:13

It's not my grandsons boat btw. He's only got a little kyak. ?

NanaandGrampy Mon 15-Jul-19 15:37:57

I'm still curious how he can take ad hoc days off school without penalty? Obliging Headmaster or not :-)

sazz1 Mon 15-Jul-19 15:43:06

So am I as Saturday would be more effective for a protest in town. More people about for a start. I think some just want a day off school

Gonegirl Mon 15-Jul-19 15:48:28

Maybe it won't be without penalty. Up to him. [shrug]

jennifereccles and all the others who think that global warming is just part of the natural cycle, my question is this why does it matter whether global warming is manmade or part of the geological cycle?

/general/causes.html]]Whether the cause is entirely human or entirely natural, surely it is foolish of us to make it worse by pouring so much extra CO2 into the atmosphere. A bit like pouring petrol on a fire and wondering why the house burns down.

je, you mention that you wonder what causes natural warming. I think you will find this article interesting.www.bgs.ac.uk/discoveringGeology/climateChange

quizqueen, you are right the one thing that will reduce global warming is a reduction in population. The good news is that we are beginning to reach those levels. Natural population growth (as distinct to immigration) has fallen below replacement level in many advanced countries worldwide. Many other countries, especially in Asia , usually considered to be have high population growth, are also approaching stasis. Of the roughly 200 countries in the world, 125 have birthrates of 2.5 (considered replacement level or less - and most of those birth rates below replacemetrate.

UN forecasts sees population growth slowing down but continuing, but other experts expect population to peak well below UN forecasts and by the end of the cntury world population could be falling.

That of course poses more but different problems

Would still love to know where the "spoilt and entitled" bit came from eazybee. Please.

rosecarmel Mon 15-Jul-19 17:41:50

I think the main problem in the US is the approach that it doesn't matter if man made or nature because neither are being addressed- They continually rebuild homes situated on the coast, the banks of rivers and flood zones- Again and again ..

I believe that principles are only principles when you hold to them even when they inconvenience or actually hurt you.
Otherwise they are just hot air. Perhaps someone should tell Emma Thompson and her ilk.

suziewoozie Mon 15-Jul-19 18:15:59

I think it’s impossible to live as a human being and keep to your principles all the time ( assuming you have principles in the first place that is). So if we’re being tough, I guess we’re all capable of hypocrisy at some time. But I think that’s a harsh word in most cases. I could always do and be better in so many ways as probably most of us could but throwing the word hypocrite around is a bit much. Not too keen on the ‘spoilt and entitled ‘ mantra either

Sorry I don't agree I have just got from Cardiff. I drove over to the outskirts and then cycles 9 miles into the centre. It was a joy in Cardiff, The centre roads were closed and traffic free so as a cyclist I would love this to be an every day event. The protestors were polite and tidy and all for a good cause which I support, Stop driving short distances, walk your children and gc to school and just think about the damage being done. Cardiff felt pollution free which can only be good for everyone.

This is the blue boat in London, and Gonegirl's Gorgeous Grandson is a little figure standing on it, in a matching blue t-shirt.

Sweet innit?

Gonegirl Mon 15-Jul-19 18:21:23

I have no idea why those people are doing yoga and meditation in front of it. I guess there is no harm in it though. [shrug]

suziewoozie Mon 15-Jul-19 18:23:04

Gone - well it’s perfectly clear from the way he is standing that he is spoiled and entitled. You should be ashamed ??

Gonegirl Mon 15-Jul-19 18:23:51

Yep! grin

Callistemon Mon 15-Jul-19 18:31:17

I do yoga too, but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be having any impact.
Obviously I'm not "hmmmmming" properly.

Gonegirl Mon 15-Jul-19 18:51:02

Yu're not doing it in the right place. Get thee to London Town.
