Ok so part of the town is shut off due to protesters causing diversions and more traffic fumes. Also the majority probably don't use public transport or ride a bike to work. When the kids did it it was on a school day not a weekend. And you can bet they drive with parents to school, clubs, visit friends etc to say nothing about gap years later when they fly around the world. Also I'll bet a lot go on foriegn holidays and certainly not biking in the countryside. Also the mess left behind shows they don't care about the environment much either. Why protest in busy streets etc when we have a huge green outside our council buildings? Anyone else feel like this or am I just a miserable OAP
Thoughts?

My GS's jobs are, supervising cricket nets, and bar tending. No hope for him. grin

Thought that didn't look right (name)

Sorry gillybob. Only going by your posts.

gillybob Wed 17-Jul-19 15:31:35

Jeez Gonegirl granted I don’t lead a very exciting life ( not by choice I hasten to add) but my circumstances are hardly “sad” . Boring I will give you, but not sad grin

Gonegirl Wed 17-Jul-19 15:32:56

Ok. Bad choice of word.

crystaltipps Wed 17-Jul-19 15:39:34

I bet most of the moaners on here would have said the same thing about the suffragettes - bunch of lazy middle class women who haven’t done a days work in their lives, disrupting everyone else’s day, taking up police time, creating havoc in the city centre. You’ve only got to read the reports of the time. So you people don’t believe that human action is causing problems for the planet, destroying the ocean and causing the extinction of millions of species by destroying their habitats and polluting the air. Anyone who protest must be just having fun and they are all about to jet off on holiday ( evidence?) and we should ignore them. Well good for you - go on sorting out the recycling and believing there’s nothing more we can do and it’s all someone else’s fault. By buying plastic tat from China, cheap fashion , and importing stuff from thousands of miles away we are all guilty and should be doing far more. Hats off to the protesters.

Just because someone doesn't agree with the methods of XR doesn't mean they don't accept there is a problem which needs to be dealt with. Again I ask, how does sitting in a pink bath in the middle of a major road do anything to solve the problem

janipat Wed 17-Jul-19 16:52:19

I agree WadesNan just because we aren't all in thrall to XR's methods doesn't make us uncaring, or moaners.
Gonegirl you're so proud of your grandson and his worry for the planet, and yet you say he will fly to the states for 3 weeks for a scout jamboree. Hardly essential travel is it, just a jolly? Just because it's booked and paid for doesn't mean he has to go. It's this not being prepared to deny themselves that causes people to think that many of the protestors are just hypocrites. And sorry, but XR welcomed Emma Thompson with open, adoring arms, and welcomed her high profile for their cause. They have to take the flak she inevitably invites too!

paddyann Wed 17-Jul-19 16:54:28

it wont SOLVE it but it will HIGHLIGHT it ..keeping things in the public eye is key to moving towards a solution .Sometimes the most ridiculous things trigger a response in people and that will make them think

Gonegirl Wed 17-Jul-19 17:07:55

janipat I have already explained the hat. The Scout Jamboree was arranged nearly three years ago, before anyone had heard of ER and before GS became so engage with saving the planet. He hasto go now. There is no getting out of it. As I said before, he is spoiling his anticipation of the trip because he feels so guilty about the flying.

Reading the thread before making comments is a good idea.

Gonegirl Wed 17-Jul-19 17:09:49

His father has for years done a huge amount of work for the Scouting Association. GS is following in his dad's footsteps. We, as a family, will not let him not go because of this.

Gonegirl Wed 17-Jul-19 17:10:47

And it's not a "jolly". Where did you get that idea?

Gonegirl Wed 17-Jul-19 17:12:05

God janipat! You are asking a lot of a seventeen year old lad.

Gonegirl Wed 17-Jul-19 17:12:48

It's not any old jamboree. It's the World Scout Jamboree. Chance of a lifetime.

Gonegirl Wed 17-Jul-19 17:13:04

Aware but doing nothing

Most of us in our own way have tuned in to the need to recycle, compost, not buy plastic, to re-use plastic whenever possible, to use solar energy, to save water, re-use water, turn lights off, only drive the car if it's necessary, but to car-share and use public transport too. We are even building insect hotels and leaving part of the garden to wild flower meadow. Our local council is into planting up islands and verges with wild flowers. I donate to charities preserving endangered species, and I feed the birds and leave water out for wildlife. The list of all the things we can do to help grows daily, and most of us with a conscience try to do our bit. Most of us have got the eco-friendly message.

Big business has to play it's part.

Stopping traffic and people going about their business while they block roads and sing and dance and wave their posters about in a jolly group gathering isn't endearing many to ER. We all know the problems the planet faces. They seem to be creating more problems, and not solving any.

crystaltipps Wed 17-Jul-19 17:35:10

It seems to be that it takes disruption for anything to get done. If there was no protests and no one drawing attention to the ecological crisis, then we’d just go around with our heads in the sand thinking someone else will do something. We may not like the methods but if thats what it takes to get the message across then so be it.

janipat Wed 17-Jul-19 17:36:50

I knew about climate change more than 3 years ago, and have been doing what I can for years. XR want to disrupt air traffic. Supposing they do it the day he's due to fly, will he still think it's right if he misses his flight and can't get another for a week or so? You say chance of a lifetime, but these protestors may well have caused somebody to miss their "chance of a lifetime" in one way or another, not to mention missed hospital appointments, and the poor man who couldn't get to his dying father in time angry If 17 is old enough to preach to others, then 17 is old enough to follow your own advice. Greta Thunberg is only 16, she talks the talk and walks the walk!!!

Gonegirl Wed 17-Jul-19 17:43:08

Right. I'll tell him to walk to America.

NSTFU

Work it out.

crystaltipps Wed 17-Jul-19 17:43:29

We may know the problems and be doing a bit of individual small scale action, but unless governments seriously get behind cutting emissions and tackling the problems of plastic and pollution by the fishing and agricultural and other big industries, the problem won’t begin to be seriously addressed. It can’t be left to self regulation - there has got to be concerted action and legislation. Pressure must be put on our esteemed politicians to put this at the top of the to do list, not giving tax reductions to the wealthy. That’s what we should be doing not pouring scorn on people who are trying to draw attention to the problem.

janipat Wed 17-Jul-19 17:54:13

Gonegirl ever the lady lol You didn't answer how he'll feel if his flight is disrupted............. Don't presume to tell me to shut up, this isn't your personal fiefdom.

merlotgran Wed 17-Jul-19 18:11:14

This is on BBC1 tonight

Sorry if it's already been mentioned but I've been out all day.

Gonegirl Wed 17-Jul-19 18:24:07

He would abandon the flight and join 'em.

Gonegirl Wed 17-Jul-19 18:25:24

Thanks for the heads up merlot.

crystaltipps Wed 17-Jul-19 18:31:33

I find it hypocritical that people criticise anyone whose ever taken a flight or eaten a burger - helps them feel justified in ignoring the important message.

Callistemon Wed 17-Jul-19 19:11:48

crystaltpops you obviously don't read many posts before you 'go off on one'!
