I will not be celebrating leaving the EU.
Are any of you going to Party the night away ?

Oopsminty Fri 31-Jan-20 12:51:37

No party here, neither happy nor sad.

Nobody seems bothered one way or the other round here

Maggiemaybe Fri 31-Jan-20 12:53:06

I really can't imagine many GNters really being the 'party the night away' type in any case, whatever happens, can you?

Yes, that crossed my mind too, Hetty, but I didn't like to say it either! On the NYE celebration thread recently, I got the impression that most people planned to be asleep before midnight. grin

varian Fri 31-Jan-20 12:53:48

Who are these deluded folk invting to their parties? Rupert Murdoch and the other tax dodging newspaper owners? Vladimir Putin and his bots? Crispin Odey and the rest of the disaster capitalists? They wont come. They're already laughing all the way to the bank.

MiniMoon Fri 31-Jan-20 13:00:26

We don't get back from kayaking until after 10pm. I'll probably go straight to bed, and read for a while before going to sleep.

JoyBloggs Fri 31-Jan-20 13:28:49

janeainsworth I too will be wearing black sad

I don't know a single person who plans to 'party'...

Calendargirl Fri 31-Jan-20 13:29:05

I shall listen to Boris if he makes a speech, and try and stay awake until 11. Whatever anyone thinks about it all, it’s an historic day.J

merlotgran Fri 31-Jan-20 13:34:38

Wearing black?

Lighting candles?

(shaking head in disbelief)

We voted Leave but won't be celebrating. Half our family wants to remain so we don't do gloating.

Yiayia4 Fri 31-Jan-20 13:38:31

Each to their own for those who wish to celebrate enjoy.

lemongrove Fri 31-Jan-20 13:39:02

Time to reserve mourning for it’s proper place methinks.

Cunco Fri 31-Jan-20 13:40:25

Varian 'Who are these deluded folk invting to their parties?'

Well, I have been invited to raise a glass with 2 of our good friends who are fellow Leavers. I am fortunate to have many friends and family that voted Remain but, thankfully, they do not have the insufferable arrogance to deem me deluded. We have a different point of view, notably as regards the wisdom of irrevocably casting our lot, and those of future generations, within a United States of Europe.

My evening will be shared with people, all of whom have university degrees, two of us in economics, and all who have proved themselves capable of making up their own minds. Face to face, I don't think most people would regard us as deluded.

Personally, I think the road ahead will be challenging but I do not share the determination of some Remainers to paint a picture of total unending gloom. I take particular exception to those who would perpetuate the insidious stereotype of the Leaver as old, gullible, stupid and racist.

I will raise a glass, not in a triumphal way, but in the hope and expectation that the UK make its way as allies and trading partners of our friends in Europe while outside the EU. I will also hope that the negativity and recrimination within the UK will cease. There are too many challenges ahead to be fighting over past battles won and lost.

lemongrove Fri 31-Jan-20 13:41:27

Exactly Yiay
It is a historic day though, so you would expect some celebrations, it’s taken so long to get to this point.

lemongrove Fri 31-Jan-20 13:42:55

Very well said Cunco smile

JenniferEccles Fri 31-Jan-20 13:45:56

I have seen a few comments on different threads from people who say they are sorry to be leaving Europe.

We are not, we are just leaving the EU.

Despite the opening credits on HIGNFY our country won’t be drifting off westwards ? !!

tickingbird Fri 31-Jan-20 13:52:42

TBF I have far more important things happening in my personal life. If I remember I’ll watch the tv at 11pm. Only time will tell if we’ve done the right thing.

Ellianne Fri 31-Jan-20 14:01:46

Well said Cunco. But I don't think one needs a university degree to prove oneself capable of making up one's mind like you say. My gathering tonight will have a carpenter, an ex marine, a lifelong housewife, all of whom are as perceptive and decisive as I am with my BSc. You can't measure everyone on academic achievement alone.

Urmstongran Fri 31-Jan-20 14:09:01

Agreed Ellieanne but some posters do bang on about the intelligence (or lack of it) in those who voted Leave. I daresay Cunco was just trying to illustrate a point!

merlotgran Fri 31-Jan-20 14:24:24

A rather opiniated acquaintance posted on facebook that tonight they're having a Brexit dinner with friends. The menu will be:

Chicken and Leek soup
Steak and Kidney Pie
Apple Crumble.

I was rather tempted to reply that the reason I voted to stay in the Common Market in 1975 was because I was sick to death of that boring menu and wanted to see some French cheeses in the supermarkets (amongst other things)

Common sense prevailed however. WW3 would put Brexit in the shade! grin

vegansrock Fri 31-Jan-20 14:47:00

You can always join Nigel Farage and his no music, no fireworks, no alcohol, no bongs party with speeches from the great man and Julia Hartley Brewer. They know how to party. Free brexit flags and pitchforks for all.

vegansrock Fri 31-Jan-20 14:49:11

People do know that nothing will change until next year - and we don't even know what that change will be yet?

Barmeyoldbat Fri 31-Jan-20 15:12:53

I will be joining a vigil in Cardiff to mourn the leaving, so no celebrations here.

janeainsworth Fri 31-Jan-20 15:25:06

Yes we do vegan, thank you.
But although we reached the point of no return when Boris Johnson won his majority last December, today is the day we formally leave the EU and it is the day which will be commemorated as such in the future.
That’s why it feels significant for Remainers and Leavers alike. sad

GrandmaMoira Fri 31-Jan-20 15:31:23

A Brexit party would be a wake.

annodomini Fri 31-Jan-20 15:44:57

No celebration here. I'm a fan of The Last Leg (Channel 4), which is having an extended show tonight. A good (if wry) laugh is what I'll be needing.

annsixty Fri 31-Jan-20 16:22:36

I have only read the last page here but how sorry I feel for all us uneducated bods with no degrees.
It is a really good job we have lots of intelligentsia to make our minds up for us and to tell us just where we are wrong.
I feel sorry for the carpenter, the marine and the lifelong housewife.

Cunco Fri 31-Jan-20 16:32:39

Ellianne Absolutely right. I only mentioned university degrees to counter, using conventional standards, the stereotype that Leavers are stupid. I think the persistent use of such stereotypes accounts for much of the anger felt by many Leavers - and perhaps for a degree of 'triumphalism'. Personally, I think it better if we avoid both.
