Vanity (personalised) license plates

Following on from the prat tabs/designer labels thread.

IMO' vanity license plates are the height of vulgarity. A clear signal of social climbing, 'look, I have money to waste!'

They make me shudder.

The purchase does not indicate someone has "money to burn" in general terms a personal number plate should be a good investment. I worked for a company that bought them for the company cars and then had them valued when the car was sold, always an increase in value. A really good one - common initials and a low number is already expensive but should produce a better return than the paltry amounts the banks and building societies pay.

The only person I have ever known to have personalised number plates - on three different vehicles at the same time, was an arrogant ex boyfriend. I have always thought they were an ego thing and a little bit embarrassing.

I quite like them, though I wouldn’t have one myself.
I know a head and neck surgeon who has B16 EAR. ?Also my previous dentist had J4 WDR . ?

What a snobby thing to say GagaJo. Each to their own, and a number plate is hardly something to shudder over. What on earth are you like when something important offends you?

Opal Wed 19-Feb-20 13:08:39

Wow GagaJo, you sound very bitter and jealous. Have you never spent money on anything just a little bit frivolous? Or is your post just an excuse to have a go at those of us who actually enjoy our lives and our hard-earned money. How sad.

I think the most extreme one I've seen was "X3 OXF" on the X3 bus to Oxford!

icanhandthemback Wed 19-Feb-20 13:35:40

I wouldn't waste my money on one because I couldn't bear the thought that every 3 years I'd have to pay through the nose to have it transferred. I guess if I am honest, I do have a preconceived "more money than sense" thought when I see one but it wouldn't make me think they were social climbers or vulgar.

granbabies123 Wed 19-Feb-20 13:50:54

I bought my husband one for his 60th birthday. It has his initials, his occupation (abr) and 60. It was meant to be.

Oopsadaisy3 Wed 19-Feb-20 13:53:24

Icanhandthemback why would you have to have it transferred every 3 years?

Mealybug Wed 19-Feb-20 13:53:39

What does it matter what people spend their own money on, how much wine do you drink, how much do you spend on clothes, holidays etc. I'm far from vulgar or vain and I have my own number plate which ends in Coo from when I had racing pigeons. Get on with your own life and spend your money how you like without being bothered by anyone else's spending.

Wow Gagajo - “ the height of vulgarity. A clear signal of social climbing, 'look, I have money to waste!' “
Well thank you for your opinion...
I’m must definitely disagree, I have one, my DH gave me for my 60th and I bought his for his 70th. We have worked hard all our lives and my DH’s first new car purchased when he retired was a treat, as were these number plates - gifts to reward to each other for all the careful management of our finances over the years. No we’re not social climbers or vulgar and we certainly don’t have money to waste!
I must admit I really don’t mind how other people spend their money, and find it odd that someone should feel so aggressive and angry about it.

I have a cherished plate of my initials, wasn’t expensive so I don’t feel I’m a social climber or snob just personalising a long awaited mini I dreamed of owning one day. I also personalised it with mirror covers and rear view, I don’t like following the crowd either

GracesGranMK3 Wed 19-Feb-20 14:13:01

Isn't this sort of thread a bit dog in the manger? Really, what does it matter what any of us think? Someone has bought and paid for them which still, so I believe, is our right to do.

If you buy them early enough you only ever have one set to learn. I wish I had known that when I was younger.

Cuckoo22 Wed 19-Feb-20 14:18:01

I’m not vain or vulgar or a social climber. Far too old for that. My plate was bought years and years ago. It’s useful when I have to put it in the hospital or other ANPR car park machines. My last car was 11 years old and if it had still worked I would have still had it, with my initials on. My friends find it useful to spot where I am out and about as I have health issues and they know if they see it around I’m ok. If they don’t see it outside the village shop, church, doctors cars park, they come to check.
My plate cost me £45. Apparently they are worth more now. It is unreasonable to label people.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Wed 19-Feb-20 14:19:06

I wouldn't buy one myself and in any case my surname begins with a letter which is not normally found on number plates. I know someone who likes quilting and part of hers reads SEW which is all right.
I had to make an anagram of mine in order to remember it.

TrendyNannie6 Wed 19-Feb-20 14:21:26

As the victorians said conspicuous consumption no different to wearing designer labels which is equally naff, whatever happened to quiet good taste, You do sound quite annoyed about things that people decide to spend their hard earned money on, yep I’ve got some designer labels too, as have some of my family, Shock Horror,

Auntieflo Wed 19-Feb-20 14:23:02

I saw a lovely one a couple of days ago on a Fiat 500.
It was. M1 500F

Nanny41 Wed 19-Feb-20 14:23:53

I have one it costs a lot more than in the UK it is valid for ten years then renuable at a reduced price the money goes to traffic accident victims definately not a waste of money or vanity we live in Sweden by the way.

BlueSapphire Wed 19-Feb-20 14:27:04

My youngest sister has one, the initial of her first name, then nunbers, and then her maiden name. Always makes me smile.

OPgrndtr Wed 19-Feb-20 14:34:19

OH GRANS! My car plate is the name that my grandchildren call me.

Nanny41 Wed 19-Feb-20 14:35:43

I am proud of mine ss the
Money for personalised plates goes to road traffic accident victims it shows I care it is NOT vanity. Also people know I am around mine is an unusual one depicting my height I suppose anyone from Liverpool would know what it means but its a talking point here in Sweden they are now educated in English local sayings

SirChenjin Wed 19-Feb-20 14:42:26

I think they’re a complete waste of money but each to their own.

Someone at a company I used to work for had one with ‘B1 MBO’ - I admit I judged her for that. Why advertise the fact that you’re thick?

Davida1968 Wed 19-Feb-20 14:44:28

I know of someone who grew up a low-income family, where money was always in short supply. She could never have anything "personalised" - not even a packet of pencils. Having grown up and achieved a management role in her chosen career, she had the chance to buy a number plate with her first name on. (As she has an unusual first name, this was quite a cheap "personal" number plate.) She jumped at the chance for this, and says it is making up for all the "named" things that she could never have as a child...

Chardy Wed 19-Feb-20 15:06:51

I think they're horrible

Washerwoman Wed 19-Feb-20 15:42:52

Personally I don't want one and it's something DH wouldn't thank me for buying one for him. However I don't take offence at other people choosing to buy one.As for vulgar.Well a couple of friends have them.Plus our lovely neighbours. They have all worked hard, are lovely kind ,considerate.law abiding people.I judge them on that. Not their number plates.
