Is anyone else becoming neurotic?

We have just had a delivery of medicine from Boots and instead of keeping his distance the young lad who brought them leaned into the house and put them on the shelf by the front door. At that point he was less than 6 feet away from me. I have sprayed the area with bleach and washed my hands umpteen times but I still worry as I am a high risk.

I worry about food deliveries and handle them with disposable gloves and any other deliveries are put in the dining room for at least 72 hours. Even the post is viewed with suspicion.

I was wondering about flies spreading the virus ............

Theoddbird Fri 27-Mar-20 12:26:52

I absolutely refuse to get in a panic. I have read nothing nor seen on television about washing your groceries. As long as you keep your hands washed regularly in nothing more than soapy water you are fine. Just wash your hands regularly. Antibacterial does not kill a virus. Soap breaks it down. When are people going to start understanding this. The things inside parcels have been there so long any virus will have died. JUST WASH YOUR HANDS IN SOAP AND WATER FOR TWENTY SECONDS. Posts like this just panic others. Please stay calm and keep stress free. Sending love and peace.

Is your daughter teaching keyworkers' children ? My son is an agricultural keyworker and I worry about him coming home to his wife and my two granddaughters.

Callistemon Fri 27-Mar-20 12:38:44

Grandtante it's heat that this virus doesn't like.
Though that is blown out of the water as to why so many Aussies have it.??

Fake news I think EllanVannin
It may not like heat, but the 26C theory and drinking warm water theory have both been disproved and the man who posted this has withdrawn the statements.

Callistemon Fri 27-Mar-20 12:39:14

extreme heat, I should clarify. Even then, I do not know.

Thank you Theoddbird for posting this, especially antibacterial and viruses...I thought it was me going mad!?

Nanan2 In January large swathes of China would have sub-zero temperatures.

Madmaggie Fri 27-Mar-20 13:00:33

We've just had our bins emptied and I've had to remind hubby to use his gloves plus wash his hands because these lovely binmen have handled hubdreds today from right across the area & we have confirmed cases here. I would just like to add but not to add to fears that the 2 metre or 6 foot distance is a MINIMUM distance required. I don't think any of you are being neurotic as we know so little so better err on caution. Good wishes to you all.

Lizbethann55 Fri 27-Mar-20 13:01:49

I don't think I was at all neurotic until I started reading these comments. Now I am neurotic that I am not being neurotic enough!! I just put my washing away when I get it, wipe down all surfaces when I remember and wash my hands periodically! I fear I am doomed.

Have just watched the Dr voung link,( may have spelled that wrong) very informing..i did wonder exactly how it kills people.please share it,(im not techy enough to know how) im gonna watch his other vid later on what to do if you get symptoms, just in case, because a lot of folk are hanging on waiting for this '7day isolate' thing and by then if you really had it,it could leave it too late...?hmm

Nannan2 Fri 27-Mar-20 13:05:25

Maybe uk gov't are hoping if that happened it would solve problem& leave less who need treatment.? Maybe im just cynical?hmm

Flakesdayout Fri 27-Mar-20 13:05:46

My DIL has just delivered some milk and bread. I didnt think - Ive put one in the freezer and now Im off to wash everything that I have touched. My friend has a daughter who is an air stewardess and BA are still flying out to the States and back (shock/horror) . I have another friend who is now having to isolate after feeling unwell at work this morning - she is a carer. And yes I am now getting quite paranoid/neurotic.

Nannan2 Fri 27-Mar-20 13:08:08

Yes i questioned that other day the oddbird? About flies spreading it...thers no advice on that from the boffins on tv???hmm

NannyG123 Fri 27-Mar-20 13:10:58

Yes I am getting really stressed. And we have an 84 yr old uncle( not living with us) who we phone daily, but keeps going to the local shop,I'm worried. As apart from washing his hands when he gets home. Doesn't do anything else to keep germs at bay.

Cam69 Fri 27-Mar-20 13:12:51

Reading the comments on here I think people are becoming overly anxious - I know we have to be careful - but your mental health is important too - especially those living on their own. Please don't become paranoid - all this bleaching , wiping and stripping off husbands is going to be too much over th coming months - try and relax!

Dillonsgranma Fri 27-Mar-20 13:16:39

I’m glad it’s not just me. I have taken to wiping front door handle, which the delivery people have touched , with dettol. And don’t forget dustbin and recycling bin handles after they have been emptied.

Having a husband with dementia and Parkinson’s is difficult, all of his groups are cancelled so there is no structure to his day.
Yesterday I was in the garden, didn’t hear the doorbell and couldn’t get to the door fast enough. Husband had taken the chain off and accepted an Amazon delivery! Sadly he can’t remember what precautions I’ve put in place. Very difficult.

annep1 Fri 27-Mar-20 13:21:22

Yes me too. Paranoid washing worktops handles etc and really not having the energy to do it. And continually losing patience easily with OH poor man. This is the only time I am speaking about IT. I have put a ban on reading watching talking. Dont want to know unless its good news about a vaccine. Like Paddyanne I have been in tears. Am practising meditation throughout the day. Trying to keep bp down. I want to pretend it isn't happening. Lets face it we are just afraid and it's understandable.
Callistemon what a lot to go through to get meds.

Thinking of you all flowers

Disinfectants are not renowned for killing viruses and thats what we are dealing with in Covid-19. If you want to try to remove the blighters from anything you need something that will dislodge them enough to allow you to remove them hence soap (to dislodge) water (doesn't need to be hot) to rinse them off. You are not killing them only removing. If you spray with all those household type sprays where are you removing them too. Are you taking everything, lathering up and then rinsing off. It's an impossible task, cardboard doesn't scrub very well! I think back to my nursing days when uniforms were laundered by the hospital. Nurses wore aprons that were changed daily and during a shift if necessary. Staff now have to launder at home giving them additional risk. Unless likely to be in high risk of contamination clothing is low risk of carrying the virus. Washing hands, distancing from people are the main needs to help prevent contamination.

I see that Channel 4 are showing a programme called Coronavirus: Can You Avoid It? at 8pm tonight.

There's no way to know in advance what the calibre of their information will be but we could do with some sensible, scientifically proven facts at this time.

Fereshtay Fri 27-Mar-20 13:34:48

Yes I am getting neurotic.
Especially when it comes to deliveries of food.
They do not give you clear enough guidelines I think.
Stressful

In the tropics, we used to have some kind of germicidal chemical we added to water when we washed vegetables. I have no idea what it was. Does anyone here know?

No, but I remember using it when we were in Cyprus years (and years) ago. I tried to find out what it was called but Google isn't telling, annodomini.
