My next door neighbour decided it's okay to have a BBQ today with more than 8 people. Definitely not a meter apart. What is wrong with people it's far too early to lift lockdown.angry

We can’t police our neighbours and friends all we can do is make sure we re doing what’s right for us And we can’t be counting how many people are in others gardens

Scientists and some in the medical profession are also concerned that lockdown has been eased too soon.

I think some people may think it is fine now to carry on as normal when the infection rates are still very high.

Nanderin. I understand why you are annoyed as those people are putting the rest of us and the NHS at risk.

At the start of lockdown our council along with fire service advised people not to light fires or have BBQ or fire pits. This was as a curtesy to those people who were having respiratory problems and trouble sleeping in the warm weather so they could keep their windows open.

A gentleman in our area died at home of CV and his family were quite rightly furious at the amount of fires being lit . She has in fact taken to local media and forums to express her disgust at her neighbours.

After a few false starts most people have complied with this.

Hey ho Boris appears on his podium Thursday night and endorses BBQs.

Scientists say wash your hands, bring your own utensils .......not a word about the dangers of smoke inhalation on already compromised people.

TBH this to me was shameful

Nanderin Sat 30-May-20 16:04:05

Exactly my feelings too and the BBQ is at the top of the garden not far from my back door and I can't open my windows.

May7 Sat 30-May-20 16:05:35

Sorry Nandarin in answer to you post No you are Not being unreasonable. You have every right to feel angry but it won’t make any difference to their behaviour.

Just shut your windows and swelter whilst your neighbours do as they please. Monday was BBQ day but they don’t give a flying fig really do they. If The instruction was 8 people they would invite 10. I’m angry too btw

Well of course it was at the bottom of their garden!!
Don’t want smoke in their house do they grrrrrr

Chewbacca Sat 30-May-20 16:53:38

The horrible acrid and greasy stench of neighbours bbqs has been wafting round our gardens for over a week now. Every damned evening. The smell knocks me sick and I have to go indoors.

Nanderin Sat 30-May-20 17:00:11

It wasn't at the bottom of the garden it's at the top at the back door practically. That's why my windows are shut.

harrigran Sat 30-May-20 17:05:31

I have to ask the question, why would anyone want a BBQ ? It is the invention of the devil. Smoke, smell and possibly dangerously undercooked food.
People that invite others into their garden clearly do not care one jot about the health of others.

We can’t police our neighbours and friends

Yes you can. OP you can alert the police through their 101 number and I believe there is an online form you can fill in if your neighbours are breaching the rules.

rafichagran Sat 30-May-20 19:58:03

I would like to be sitting in the garden, I cant because next door but one have a smoke filled BQ, so I am in the sitting room with the windows closed.
The BQ smoke was heavy, and there was one guest there whose voice boomed over at least 10 gardens. Like I said I gave up and come in.

JenniferEccles Sat 30-May-20 22:57:20

I think BBQs are awful at the best of times but a really bad idea at the moment .

I don’t have a problem with people having a few family members or friends round in the back garden but a picnic would be so much better, with everyone bringing their own food.

There are so many utensils with BBQs which are handled by everyone so the chances of spreading the virus is increased.

Rosalyn69 Sun 31-May-20 06:34:01

I really enjoy a BBQ. We have had one on three days last week. Ours has lid and does not smoke and our food smells delicious.

Esmerelda Sun 31-May-20 09:39:18

I'm with BlueBelle on this ...

Nannan2 Sun 31-May-20 09:47:29

I know- stupid Boris, just letting it all stream out of his mouth, about being ok to bbq, use the toilets, pass through house to get to gardens, etc. whilst the scientist geek stood there looking more & more panic-stricken with every word! He tried to save it by adding "but if you do any of that you must disinfect everything & wash your hands"! But it was too late- Boris had already given the green light to all the idiots across Britain! I guess its to cover their own arses- we can guess what Boris & Dominic cummings are going to be doing- bbq!angry

Thecatshatontgemat Sun 31-May-20 09:55:00

I came back from my cycle ride yesterday evening, and passed by a recreational ground that appeared to have every available teenager from the whole of the county on it.
Barbecues were everywhere, and they were all enjoying themselves without a care in the world, or any social distancing whatsoever.
So: eight people next door? That's nothing to what is going on elsewhere.......

Nannan2 Sun 31-May-20 09:56:31

Yes Rosalyn69, IF a bbq's done properly, how it should be, they are good, but trouble is most folk don't let the charcoal etc. burn off first- as your'e supposed to- they add food too soon, that's why they get all that smoke- and still they carry on regardless! Folk near me are always lighting blinking fires in gardens even when its not a bbq! (Burning rubbish/garden rubbish i think?) I'm sick of never being able to hang washing out on a lovely warm day- or having to bring it in when the smell of smoke starts! No Nandarin- you are not being unreasonable at all!angry

polnan Sun 31-May-20 09:56:42

I so agree,, why the need to follow the Americans in this?

I like my food cooked well, and eat at table! LOL

the problem as I see it is that not only putting others at risk in various ways, the R number will increase and we will ALL be locked up again, or dead... take your pick!

Taliya Sun 31-May-20 09:58:23

From looking at the packed beaches over the last few days it seems that many people are stupid and also selfish. Yes, they may be younger but by crowding anywhere with no social distancing its just asking for trouble and the virus to spread. These people do not think of others ...anyone over 45 could be at extra risk. I suppose your neighbour is of the same ilk but it you stay inside then at least they are not spreading their germs to you.

Chris0 Sun 31-May-20 09:59:43

The lighter fuel of BBQs makes me heave a d the people at the bottom if our garden have them regularly.
The gentleman of the house yesterday spent a good few hours having a very loud conversation with someone guffawing and swearing making it very uncomfortable to be able to relax in the garden.
I know we can do as we please in our own homes but please be aware when outside that not everyone wants to listen to your conversations and crude comments. Rant over

25Avalon Sun 31-May-20 10:00:19

I have a suspicion allowing bbqs is so that more people stay at home in their garden instead of packing the beaches where it is impossible for flouting of social distancing to be policed.

Mollygo Sun 31-May-20 10:03:48

I don’t think YABU to wish it wasn’t happening so close to your house but I’m with Bluebelle too. I want to stay friends with my neighbours and if I don’t look and don’t count, it won’t bother me.

The good news is that keeping your windows shut when the weather is hot makes sense as it keeps the house cool. We have windows open early morning and late evening, but mostly closed during the day when it’s hot.
Being angry is bad for your BP. Close the windows and try to stay calm.

lindyloo1958 Sun 31-May-20 10:04:58

I too am infuriated by selfish people who do not care. It’s all very well for people to ignore when others break the rules, but it’s going to be all of us who suffer again when the R rate rises, and it will. It’ll be even longer before we can get back to some degree of normality and more tragic deaths. I am the manager of a care home and have been 100% doing the right thing. We are all in this together. It’s only our behaviour that can pull us out of this awful situation.

Beanie654321 Sun 31-May-20 10:05:42

And have you seen social distancing at the beach!!!!! Flabbergasted. Idiots all of them.
