Men wearing tights under shorts, AIBU

On my daily walks I can't help noticing that about two out of three male runners are wearing little skimpy shorts with woolly tights. Why not wear joggers or leggings? When did this start and WHY?

geekesse Sun 31-Jan-21 15:19:50

Alison333, you said ‘I was just asking why there seems to be a new fashion for men to wear shorts over tights when running...’

1. They’d look really silly if they wore tights without shorts over them.

2. Why do any new fashions emerge? I guess someone thinks it’s a good idea and others copy.

Scottydog6857, your words remind me of my grandmother, who made my life an utter misery when I was a teenager when she continually cast doubt on my morals because I didn’t choose to dress the way she thought I should. I avoided her and kept her well away from my children as a result. It can be a bit lonely there up on the moral high ground.

Yes Mr Barmey wears his black jogging/cycling trousers with knee length shorts over the top when cycling. He informs me it keeps his bits warm. I wear my knitted knee warmers over my cycling trousers to keep my knees warm, especially the one that has been replaced.

Also I have seen young girls wearing usually denim shorts with black tights underneath. No different.

Chewbacca Sun 31-Jan-21 16:15:39

Three reasons why anyone wears anything:

1. To keep their bits covered up
2. To keep warm
3. Fashion and they like it

I don't have a problem with it! If it's practical, it's fine.

Legs55 Sun 31-Jan-21 18:34:35

Around 50 years ago young, male farmers wore tights under their jeans etc to keep warm. I don't have a problem, I dress for comfort not fashion & don't see why others shouldn't wear what they like

Well, if it was good enough for Robin Hood and his Merry Men.....

off topic, but reading MN i discovered that girls at secondary school who wear skirts require their mothers to buy them cycling type shorts to wear with them. because of up-skirting.
this is the norm apparently. don't know if necessary at girls only schools.

The tights are to keep them warm. The shorts are to protect their dignity. Tights/leggings leave little to the imagination, hence the combination.

I think I’d rather men in tights (or leggings) under shorts than men with bare, hairy legs shock

MissAdventure Mon 01-Feb-21 10:03:28

I'd prefer bare legged, hairy men anyday! smile

Walkingthetightrope Mon 01-Feb-21 10:17:58

I think you’ll find they're compression tights, my husband wears them if he’s having issues with overtired muscles. It’s nothing to do with being tougher up North ? Just men taking care of themselves. Hubbie has been using them for years.

They have many more inspirational exercise videos, all while wearing the kilt.

MissAdventure Mon 01-Feb-21 13:00:51

They do!?
I'm off for a look.

MissAdventure Mon 01-Feb-21 13:09:26

I can report back that they manage. Admirably! wink

Elegran Mon 01-Feb-21 13:13:44

George IV had an answer to the problem, when he visited Scotland in 1822. He was dressed A La Highlander (he loved dressing up) but his kilt was far too short, well above his fat knees, so he added pink silk (wrinkled) tights. georgianera.wordpress.com/2015/08/04/one-and-twenty-daft-days-in-1822-king-george-iv-visits-scotland/

Sir Davis Wilkie immortalised the scene in paint, but slimmed the King down a lot, lengthened the kilt, and left out the tights.

Elegran Thanks, but no thanks! hmm
The opening video shot made me think, for a moment, that you were leading me astray again. Man boobs!? No way, although I can see why you might have bookmarked it! grin
I stuck with it, despite the lack of English captions to explain its purpose, hoping they would start doing handstands, but no such luck!
They were too good in the modesty deportment stakes! hmm

I think it's just for added warmth.

It's amazing how much difference there is between bare legs and just a pair of normal tights, I'm surprised there haven't been more women who regularly wear tights in the colder months haven't already said this from personal experience.

My partner who works on the motorways, will occasionally (when it's truly bitterly cold) put a pair of tights under his thermals and hi-vis trousers for an extra layer of warmth and he's a Yorkshire lad, not a woossy southerner either!

I've seen this kind of attire in Birmingham in February....

PECS Tue 02-Feb-21 09:54:56

We do seem to want to.police what people wear... does it start with the English love of uniforms??

I personally do not find uniforms atractive but I know people admire them.

Blossoming Tue 02-Feb-21 10:13:25

I’m not bothered PECS though I do occasionally wonder if some people never look in a mirror. That’s unkind and judgmental of me, but in my defence I keep those thoughts to myself. I wore some outlandish stuff in my youth. I do like to see formal dress uniforms though, my inner costumier loves looking at the detail and construction.

PECS Tue 02-Feb-21 17:03:10

Blossoming I'd be telling a lie if I said I didn't raise an eyebrow occasionally at some choices of attire grin but probably because I wear clothes others might consider "odd", inappropriate , or plain unfashionable!

Bridgeit Tue 02-Feb-21 18:26:40

Because they can??but it doesn’t mean they should ?
