BBC overkill on reporting proposed european super league

I'm a regular listener to Radio 4's 5pm, the 6pm News and the World Tonight at 10pm. Yesterday, the lead news item on all 3 was the proposed european superleague for football. Each program had lengthy discussions on the subject. And the same today so far.
Is there really nothing more important or interesting going on in the country and the world than this?! Past surveys I've seen show that the majority of us just aren't interested in football. So why? Any answers anyone?

It’s big money.
The Far East - China & Korea are football (and betting) mad. The tv scheduling take the time zones into account for this highly lucrative market.

Spanish clubs Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are also understood to be in favour of withdrawing.

I did wonder is this a way Boris thinks he can get back in favour with Joe Public with local elections coming up - baring in mind his low opinion of us.

Super wealthy football club owners are in it for the money. Who knew?

GrannyGravy13 Wed 21-Apr-21 07:22:58

All six English Premier Clubs have all now pulled out of the Super League

Whitewavemark2 Wed 21-Apr-21 07:45:27

That went well then

It was viewed as a bargaining position, a genuine proposal and a dead duck within 24 hours! I am not sure if Boris was looking for a way to get back in favour with the public by opposing the plan. He already seems to be ahead in the Polls although, in fairness, Polls don't have a great record and the public will make up its own mind when the time comes.

I’m not remotely interested in football, nor is dh, but I do appreciate what a big deal this was for so many people. And even I was pleased to hear that the 6 major U.K. clubs have pulled out - a rare victory over what was apparently pure greed.

That's that, then. The money grabbing owners will have to find some other way of dealing with their staggering amounts of debt. Perhaps refusing to pay players eye-watering salaries might be a start. I love football but £400,000 a week to kick a ball around a bit of grass? Come on!!!

Ro60 Wed 21-Apr-21 10:06:14

I'm surprised they didn't do any research before making this public. Egg on their face. ??

henetha Wed 21-Apr-21 10:12:54

I don't like football, but millions do and this was important news and deserved the coverage it got.
Thank goodness these clubs have changed their mind and pulled out now. It was all about money, not sport.
It is still too much about money anyway, regardless of the above. It needs reforming. A cap on players salaries would be a good start.

MerylStreep Wed 21-Apr-21 10:14:55

Sarnia
That’s the first thing I looked at when this was first proposed.
Added to that, JP Morgan are involved. That’s when you know it stinks.

I’m not a football fan,and I used the off button so didn’t watch all the hoo-haa about it, but the publicity this time seems to have been a good idea.
Henetha a cap on player salaries is a great thought. Marcus Rashford could lead the way and might even be the first to say he doesn’t need his £200,000 per week.
Where would all the extra money go?
Lower prices for tickets so less well off fans could get to matches? ?
Money donated to charities? ? It could make a world of difference to a lot of people.
More money for club owners. ???

Why pick out MR? Apart from the fact that he made the Government look like the heartless swines they are? And why pick out high earning footballers anyway ? What part of market forces don’t people understand ?

Mollygo Wed 21-Apr-21 10:56:35

SW he’s the only footballer whose name I know. His earnings were well publicised when he raised the excellent matter of FSM.
Why pick out high earning footballers? I thought I’d only mentioned one, but I’ll explain so you understand, that they would be the ones in the teams picked for the Super League.
I was answering and agreeing with Henetha, but since you’ve quoted me, which is your right, which of the three outcomes do you think would be more likely out of the three I offered?

I think that in a free market economy with a Govt like ours, it’s absolutely ridiculous to discuss the idea of a cap on wages. And even more ridiculous to single out one particular group of earners.

Nanny27 Wed 21-Apr-21 11:08:03

This is a huge story. I’m not a footie fan but I do recognise the importance of this. If it’s not challenged it could be the beginning of the end for sport as we know it.

GrammarGrandma Wed 21-Apr-21 11:10:47

I agree. We are not the slightest bit interested in football and couldn't care less about the superleague but it was the lead story on all news bulletins, including Channel 4 news, which is usually more sensible.

Alioop Wed 21-Apr-21 11:17:49

I think Boris needs to sort out his priorities. A lot more pressing matters than super rich football teams thinking of leaving the Premier League.

Aepgirl Wed 21-Apr-21 11:38:34

Why is this super league not restricted to Sports News? It shouldn’t affect our regular important news reports. You will guess that I am not a football fan, but I do sometimes time the sports report v the ‘proper’ news, and guess which sometimes gets more time?

Mollygo Wed 21-Apr-21 11:51:33

I’m feeling slightly suspicious that this has all kicked off prior to these elections and Johnson has emerged as the saviour of British football hmm...

Paperbackwriter Wed 21-Apr-21 11:57:11

It all sounds rather tedious but not unlike the international rugby set-up where nations play each other and there's no promotion to or from a league. I don't know what all the fuss is about. It's just football involving large sums of money, apparently. Gosh, who'd have thought?

Caragran Wed 21-Apr-21 11:59:19

What would all these maniac fans do if these very rich investors withdrew their money. What would they do if no other rich investors wanted to put their money into football. Bet the fans wouldn't want to put their own money in

Worthingpatchworker Wed 21-Apr-21 12:00:54

What a great shame the same amount of media coverage hasn’t been given to the debacle concerning the pensions of women born in the fifties!

When I hear an issue which involves the government given such an amount of airtime as this....I do wonder what they have slipped under the radar. What are they trying not to talk about. What thing are we being duped on now!?
Oh.....and...no I am not a fan of football. I appreciate it is an extremely popular sport has changed the lives of many but I am appalled by the over inflated money these pseudo celebrities and their wags get. It is an insult to footballers of the past and to the hard working people who pay high ticket prices and get sucked into the merchandise of these people.
