My husband thinks I’m being a bit silly over this, but why can’t the BBC, ITV and everywhere else talking about the vaccination, call the injection the vaccination, or double vaccination ? Instead they call it the JAB!!!! It drives me mad every time I hear it. Honestly, “double jabbed” for pity’s sake! Anyone with me on that one?

I meant BJ not NJ

@Corryanna, you have just used one of my least favourite phrases - my bad. I really dislike the word meh, too.

Spuds instead of potatoes.

“Reaching out” instead of phoning

Not many slang words bother me but a lot of my friends call me hun, hunni, hon, honey etc via text which really makes me cringe ? Not keen on word hubby now I come to think of it……

Bit of a follow on from this post. I don't imagine I'm alone in being irritated by the way our language is changing. I know language does evolve over time, but .... It seems we now don't just live our lives, we 'navigate our way through life'. Thing dont increase, they 'uptick'. That one is my pet hate. Anyone who participates in anything are now 'actors'. I could go on. Is it all intended to make those in the media or big business sound much cleverer than the rest of us?

A friend of mine told me she’d been ‘vaxxed twice’. I thought she’d had her carpets cleaned!

Not slang but it seems everyone has to have to have been on a ‘journey’ these days.

I detest the expression telly - it is a television.
Have no objection to the word jab, it isn't an abbreviation.
My bone of contention is obvious - why does everything have to be abbreviated.

Dunno. grin

maytime2 Mon 28-Jun-21 15:27:46

I don't like the expression "yours" as in "I'll come round to yours later". Why don't they say your house.

MissAdventure Mon 28-Jun-21 15:29:28

I say lots of these things.
I must leave an army of seething pedants in my wake.

Mapleleaf Mon 28-Jun-21 15:41:38

I dislike "fess up" rather than "confess". The former isn't even any quicker to say!

readalot Mon 28-Jun-21 16:07:45

I hate the word woke and when someone says my bad.

NannyMags Mon 28-Jun-21 17:34:20

I hate the word hubby!

Shreddie Mon 28-Jun-21 18:13:18

Getting an "invite" is one I hate. I also hate the "my bad" saying that people use. I suppose language evolves through popular usage but I don't have to like it!

Missiseff Mon 28-Jun-21 19:02:08

Good grief.

ElaineRI55 Mon 28-Jun-21 21:18:09

Can't get used to "my bad" but we have used adjectives as nouns in lots of places for years. The long and short of it /Bitter with the sweet/ the poor/ the brave.....
"My bad" is maybe just too American for me!

GreyKnitter Mon 28-Jun-21 22:42:24

I hate ASAP spoken as a word. Really grates!

grannyqueenie Tue 29-Jun-21 13:31:25

You and me both MissAdventure! ?

MissAdventure Tue 29-Jun-21 13:47:32

"We bad" grannyqueenie smile

grannyqueenie Tue 29-Jun-21 18:51:06

Very probably MissAdventure ?

JaneJudge.... I can just imagine asking people if they've had their prick yet. Or had a prick , or have they had a double prick or second prick , it even if they know a prick . Yes I know I'm getting carried away. But I loved your answer and humour.?

Yorki Wed 30-Jun-21 02:05:08

grandMattie...or "have you been shot twice ??? "?

bobbydog24 Wed 30-Jun-21 13:49:58

A friend when told ‘just a little prick’ when having a vaccination would reply, ‘ you’ve met my husband then’,
