Food deliveries by unmasked drivers

I'm quite cross and concerned. S*****s have been delivering our shopping and mostly they have done a sterling job. On Friday the driver arrived with no mask. On being politely asked to wear one he refused so we declined the delivery. Sainsbury now say they cannot guarantee a masked delivery driver. We are vulnerable ?

Crikey, I have never wiped my groceries down, just put them away, wash my hands and wash down the worktop I stood them on.
I didn’t realise people still called themselves senior citizens either.
I must be out of touch.

Not surprised this is unnecessary I did it once back in 2020 and decided it was a total waste of time

Do you want to return to some sort of normality
I don’t believe some do. I have 2 elderly neighbours who found the lockdown and daily briefings quiet exciting.
We had get get togethers in our small close ( outside) all through the summers. The pandemic was their only topic of conversation. They would get very animated, almost excited when there was a ‘big’ announcement. Very sad.

My Sainsbury delivery drivers now come to my back door. I ask them to bring the crates into my kitchen, hey then unpack for me, whilst I’m a fair distance, then go when it’s all been unloaded. As I’m disabled, it works really well for me, and them.

I think it’s time now to stop being hysterical about everything. Just look after yourself and get back to living.

As a Senior citizen I keep several masks on a cabinet near my door. Bring in your groceries, wipe each item down with disinfectant or Lysol wipe and once finished putting everything in place immediately wash your hands with a antibacterial soap, there's only so much we can do.

Have you listened or read anything about this virus. It is airborne. All I can assume is that you enjoy this pantomime that you go through.

Please stop wetting your pants?it’s been over for a while now you’re perfectly safe!!!

If you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem!
People are still dying. Healthy people thrice vaccinated are still being infected (DD and DS at different ends of the country a case in point), and people are still dying. People taking immuno-suppressant medication are at a particular risk because it is not known how effective the vaccinations will be, and they are still at risk of serious or fatal consequences of catching the virus.

Thisismyname1953 Tue 25-Jan-22 16:18:56

As from Thursday we can all give up wearing masks . On the whole the virus is now a lot weaker than it was 2 years ago . Within a couple of months there will be no need for covid testing never mind mask wearing .
I wouldn’t let it bother me at all and I’m one of the vunerable encouraged to shield at the beginning of all this . I was also hospitalised with covid before before vaccinations were available . I’m now triple jabbed and won’t be letting covid rule my life any longer.

annodomini Tue 25-Jan-22 16:22:11

MerylStreep, thanks for your informative link which confirms my presentiment that we haven't seen the last of Covid, though the Omicron has given us respite (possibly temporary) from more severe variants. Am I 'glass half full' or 'glass half empty'? Can't make up my mind! hmm

I’m really sorry you are so anxious runnerbean because clearly if you are vulnerable you do need the deliveries.
I have deliveries from Tesco and Ocado and some drivers wear a mask some don’t. However on balance I consider the risk to be negligible of catching Covid from the driver outside, if he does not come into the house, and stands at a distance whilst you transfer your shopping to your own containers.

Bignanny2 Tue 25-Jan-22 16:54:50

I put plastic boxes on my doorstep and a note asking the driver to transfer the goods to my boxes then give me a knock. They usually wait until I open the door before the leave and I have to say all but one very young man have had masks on since the start of the pandemic. I use sainsburys or Waitrose.

jerseygirl Tue 25-Jan-22 16:58:13

you can wear a mask but the driver doesn't have to as he is nowhere near you and he isn't coming into your house.

ALANaV Tue 25-Jan-22 17:34:28

It will soon no longer be a legal requirement to wear a mask ....suggest you take a taxi to get your shopping if you are unhappy with that

songstress60 Tue 25-Jan-22 17:51:41

If you are vaccinated why are you troubled by someone not wearing a mask. I am so glad that after Thursday they are no longer mandatory, so I will sling mine!! Let's get back to normal, and stop living in fear. You don't wear a mask with flu so why is everyone so scared of the virus when they are treble jabbed. Not normal to be cowering in fear like this, and it will affect people's mental health. Bring on Thursday so I can sling my mask, and no more temperature checks if I am on a coach trip. Bring on normality

LilacChaser Tue 25-Jan-22 17:54:13

Wow, I am so heartened by the majority of the posts on here, after having an 11 page argument about the uselessness of masks on another thread only last week.

At last people seem ready to embrace the 'newer' normal.

Franbern Tue 25-Jan-22 17:57:22

I have only started to have grocery deliveries in the past few months -since I decided to rid of my car. I live in a first floor flat - there is a lift, although I have noticed that usually the Sainsbury's driver comes up the stairs. Having buzzed him in at the main entrance door, I take my wheeled bag outside of my front door, so that as soon as he arrives I can quickly unload the trays into this bag, which I can then wheel into my kitchen. Would never expect him to unload on top of all the rest of his duties. Anyway, by putting this myself into my wheeled bag, I can ensure that the items are what I wish to keep.

Cannot even remember if any of these delivery drivers have worn a mask, not really been something that concerned me. Neither has ever crossed my mind to disinfect or wash down my shopping. Throughout Lockdowns, I was doing a weekly, enjoyable trip to my local store. Now, I do still prefer going in-store shopping at least once a month on the bus.

At 80 years of age and with asthma, I have every intention of living to the full whilst I can and not lock myself away fearing everybody I ever see.

OMG, the world was gone crazy, masks have never even been proven to make that much difference, the government has done a fantastic job of scaring people. Please try not to worry when someones not wearing a mask.

What some posters on here do not understand is that if you are CEV and immunocompromised, despite having all vaccinations, some of us are still at high risk of death from Covid, because vaccinations have had little impact and we have scant protection from Covid.

I had two hospital appointments last week and both consultants urged me to continue wearing a mask and keep a safe distance from others. For us it is not over yet!

I do not lock myself away, but I know that the only person who can keep me safe is myself, therefore I take approriate measures.
However, I do wish people would show more consideration for the likes of us, especially the elderly man, who physically pushed me out of the way the other day, to reach an item in a supermarket, especially, as I live in Scotland and masks along with social distancing are still compulsory in shops. Ask yourself why we haven't ditched masks.

Finally, thank you , Pammie for your posts and to those who have not been so pleasant in their posts, in dismissing our concerns, walk in our shoes!

annodomini Tue 25-Jan-22 19:00:12

The Government has put its eggs in the basket of vaccinations and especially the booster shots. However, I know at least three people close to me who, though triply vaxed have contracted Covid - one of them sick enough to warrant an anti-viral infusion. I've had all my vaccinations but I know this doesn't guarantee immunity and I hope that the posters on this thread who are assuming that it's almost all over aren't going to get a nasty shock when they cast away all precautions.

hicaz46 Tue 25-Jan-22 19:54:08

As Sainsburys still aren't using bags for home deliveries we have 2 collapsible square trollies (those found at garden shows) which we fill and then wheel through to our kitchen where we unload. Some drivers wear masks and some don't but they always keep their distance.

Well said. So much insensitivity on this thread towards those whose experience throughout Covid has been a particularly frightening one. A bit of imagination, compassion and empathy wouldn't go amiss.

Beswitched, I agree!

Thank you, Beswitched, it is the insensitivity of some posters, which has really annoyed me.

By the way, it wasn't the Government, who did a great job of scaring me, it was my GP, cardiologist and RA consultant, who literally put the fear of death in me. How could these professionals got it so wrong! wink

That is simply not true! Masks have been shown to make a difference, especially if they are worn properly. Nevertheless, transmission in outdoor spaces with social distancing is very low and a delivery driver not wearing one shouldn't be a concern.
