To have enjoyed watching ‘Grease’ on BBC1 on Sunday afternoon

Are we all so lacking in common sense that we will model our behaviour on a film. It would appear a lot of people think so.

I love Grease. It’s message is really bad but it’s fun and the songs are great imo.

The rape scene is from Saturday Night Fever.

Misogynistic? Sort of correct for the time it was set in, can still enjoy it for its music and fun. Think the rape scene on the bridge was edited out for TV. Lots of older movies, books, artwork etc is deeply offensive if viewed through a 21C feminist lens but happy to see them as works of their time and reminders of the progress we've made. Think Olivia NJ probably didn't need to get shagged by Harvey Winestock to get the part either and John Travolta doesn't look like he's particular mysoginist. ? Not right to pretend women have always been treated as powerful and independent as this misrepresents history and anyway we still don't have proper equality, can't escape that .

Omg cancel grease.. the world has gone mad. It is a wonderful iconic film and I still love it, having gone at age 14 twice to see it in the cinema. Another film, even older, that I love is "To Sir with love", with the late great Sidney Poitier. Another film that the "woke" community would probably want banned as it contains racist themes. These people can have their ridiculous opinions but should not be listened to by the majority, nor their opinions acted upon

I love Grease and saw the stage show of it a few months ago. My friends and I watched it all the time in our teens along with Quadrophenia, which showed a lot of drug taking, and The Wanderers which was gang fighting, I could go on. It was of its time and feels tame now to me compared to some of the scenes in films nowadays.

Here we are discussing Grease and misogyny but if you look at more modern films so many are about the slaughter of young, beautiful women. I'm not sure that is any better than a bit of light entertainment where I thought the men looked like real plonkers. They were bigging up their sexual prowess whilst she was probably being more truthful! I loved the film in its day and can't understand why we can't use films like this as a critical review of past attitudes rather than banning it.

We all watched it for the music and John Travolta when I was a teenager. None of us took the message at the end very seriously (if we even thought about it).

I loved Kenickie. I cant remember the whole line in the film, but it started 'A hickey from Kenicke, I remember laughing at the time. I just cant remember the rest.

The difference is, misogynistic rap music is mostly black artists & films like Grease are mostly white.

I don’t know whether anyone else has noticed, but outrage of this sort isn’t directed at rap music - which has some of the most violent, hate filled and misogynistic lyrics I’ve ever heard. So what’s different ?

The thing about Grease is that it was a 1970s view of what the 1950s were like, so not necessarily accurate!

There was a Teddy Boy who lived around the corner from me when I was a young teenager; he was the older brother of a schoolfriend.
Fascinating but I would have run a mile if he'd ever deigned to glance in my direction ?
