Women athletes’ clothing

AIBU in thinking that what the women wear in, for example, gymnastics and athletics is verging on the obscene? I understand the need for streamlined clothing but some of them might as well be wearing nothing ?‍♀️.

I don't understand how women athletes in whatever sport can manage to wear those crotch creepers which don't creep. Why do they have to have most of their bum showing to such an extent as to need a full crotch wax before competing?

Fleurpepper Fri 05-Aug-22 11:26:50

No, not at all. But no need for exposing all either.

Callistemon21 Fri 05-Aug-22 11:22:49

They really should be wearing full wetsuits, shouldn't they!!

Fleurpepper Fri 05-Aug-22 11:20:08

Yes! thought the OP was OTT- but last night was really surprised at the women's diving suits, which were so skimpy almost like g-strings. Is that really necessary. They were constantly pulling at them as if embarrassed themselves?

Galaxy62 Fri 05-Aug-22 06:48:05

Omg just seen the diving costumes!

I think men athletes can wear some sort of pouch like what ballet dancers wear.

The only female athletic clothing that ever bothered me was the tiny skimpy bikini bottoms that the beach volleyball female athletes were REQUIRED to wear - even though the women didn't like them. Can't speak for any other competition but they are not wearing them at the Commonwealth Games. As for track and field, and gymnastics, competitors have options of what to wear - they are not forced to wear the skimpier outfits. Some female runners wear long shorts like the men, others seem to prefer the ones that look like knickers - I assume its down to personal preference and comfort/performance. The tiniest outfits are those that male divers wear - don't see anyone complaining about those!

Duvetdiva Thu 04-Aug-22 20:12:49

I hope those of you who verbally attacked the OP have read Nannymags27’s second post whereby she qualifies and explains more.
Ouch!

Cold Thu 04-Aug-22 19:59:54

Actually the athletes wearing the smallest outfits seem to be male divers - will we be telling them to cover up?

Gabrielle56 Thu 04-Aug-22 18:12:31

Pay attention to the activity not the clothes! Leave that sort of observation to the old dodgy and usually male!

GraceQuirrel Thu 04-Aug-22 16:56:55

Goodness, if you’re not having to wear it why worry?

4allweknow Thu 04-Aug-22 16:38:54

Clothing in sport? What about some of the outfits female pop stars, group wear, just about nothing. I often wonder why male performers dont' turn up in "budgie smugglers" and bare chests. Seems the least coverage is the aim after all. In sport wonder how bad results would be if cotton teeshirt/vests and shorts had to be worn.

If the men can compete in shorts without their arse cheeks hanging out than so can the women. Women have absorbed this sexism in female attire and ‘don’t even see it’.
This brain washing starts very young : when you see little children on the beach, the boys are all in comfy shorts , half the girls will have their bottoms on show because their swimsuits are designed to sexualise them but their parents ‘don’t see it’.

No, they're not and anyone who sees anything sexual about young girls is a danger to society.

Callistemon21 Thu 04-Aug-22 16:24:06

Yes, I know!

Women essentially wearing no more than bra and knickers….

Which makes it seem ridiculous that Chloe Kelly got a yellow card for taking off her top.

Mandatory.

There have been a number of incidents of female athletes complaining about the clothing they are expected to wear compared to males.

In the Olympics, it was, I think, the Norwegianwomen's beach volleyball team that got fined because they refused to wear tiny bikini bottoms. Good on them.
Also - I do think it's a bit wrong that teen female gymnasts have to wear skimpy leotards (there are rules about how they must show a couple of centimetres of bum). I don't think any female should have to wear an outfit for sport that would require a thorough waxing.

Where on earth did you come up with this bit of misinformation? (re bums). Absolute nonsense. Female gymnasts may, if they wish, wear an all in one leotard that goes down to their ankles. What is important is that the entire length of their legs and arms can be clearly seen by the judges.

When watch gymnastics, I see the fabulous skills and lovely dancing being performed. I am sure that there will always be people who can only ever see sexual things about anything. Male gymnasts wear 'longs' for some apparatus and 'shorts' for others. Long been the tradition - up to very few years ago, these HAD to be in WHITE only. Been great since they revised that rule and can wear coloureds now.

The women's leotards have got more fancy in terms of decoration and materials used over the years. Back in the 70's they were shapeless bri-nylon and elastic had to be sewn in (by parents) into the waist area to give any shape whatsoever. When 'silkes' first appeared clubs used to only loan those out to competitors and insisted that no-one else could wash these (many had a white V in the front and the colours were not very fast!!).

These days, leotards are beautiful, and well made and expensive!!!! No leotard should travel up the bum area if it properly and well made.

Yes, gymnasts and other athletes are IMHO groomed into thinking they have to wear skimpy clothes and the various committees and governing bodies that require young women to wear very brief clothing to participate in sport are culpable. The Norwegian beach handball team were fined for not wearing bikinis, only the female players of course, the men could wear shorts and proper tops. It's sexist and abusive and I'm shocked parents allow their daughters to be forced into such exhibitionism in order to compete.

Treetops05 Thu 04-Aug-22 14:44:19

Some of the shorts are rather, umm brief! Nothing wrong with any body, but do we need to see so much or so many of them? I hate sport, and OH says he hates athletics, but as it is on most channels there is no escape

nadateturbe Thu 04-Aug-22 14:21:09

They don't dress like that in the Supermarket.

Why not. Everyone is complaining about the heat. Why is everyone not shopping/going to school/ work in skimpy bikinis?

I see young girls walking around in shorts showing their bum cheeks for want of a better phrase. Also revealing leggings that show knickers and thongs.
I prefer when females had some modesty.
There is absolutely no need for athletic wear to be so skimpy.
Many athletes have actually said they find the outfits degrading. They can compete just as well with a little more coverage.

It's not Victorian nonsense, and we don't need to be covered from head to toe. Nothing wrong with a bit of modesty.

Bazza Thu 04-Aug-22 13:44:54

I sat next to Sally Gunnell at a lunch when she was at the top of her tree, and I asked her about the skimpy bottoms she wore, and did they ride up? She said yes they did which made them uncomfortable and her mum used to sew knicker elastic around the legs. Perhaps the cut and fabric has improved over the years.

Theoddbird Thu 04-Aug-22 12:50:32

I have been watching all sorts of different events during the Commonwealth Games. I have seen nothing to offend in what is being worn. The original poster and some others must be easily offended. I suggest they stay away from beaches this summer...hahaha

nipsmum Thu 04-Aug-22 12:35:19

Whats the problem. We all have the same bits and pieces. There is nothing that we should be ashamed about. Yes modesty was taught to most of us but there is nothing we haven't seen before. I wish people in this country would stop the Victorian nonsense or we would all be wearing coverings from top to toe. These Peopleare first class athletes and wear appropriate clothes for their sport. If your embarrassed don't watch sport. They don't dress like that in the Supermarket.

Lizzie44 Thu 04-Aug-22 12:33:03

Can women do nothing without their appearance/dress sense being called in to question?
