Further to wearing shoes indoors...

If you wear shoes indoors, when do you put them on, and then take them off? Where do you keep them?

We don't wear indoor shoes, so all shoes are kept in the closet by the front door, other than dressy shoes which are in our bedroom closet.

I do wear slippers, stored either in the bedroom or front closet.

If you do wear shoes all day inside, what about when you put your feet up in the evening... shoes on the couch or ottoman?

Indoor trainers, no slippers. No feet on furniture.

Apart from our children and grandchildren, they put on slippers when they arrive, stored in the closet in baskets.

Surely you mean no shoes on the furniture Norah, rather than no feet, as lying on the sofa in the evening is one of life’s pleasures.

I have a selection of indoor shoes - and no slippers. The shoe cabinet is full, so I tend to keep them in the hall next to it. I take a pair of 'indoor' ones when I visit - as I'd hate to be in just my socks - or (far worse) somebody else's slippers!

Yes, we keep indoor trainers at our daughters and other family members - other people, I take ballet shoes with me.

I wear shoes indoors - usually put on in the morning in bedroom and leave on all day. Unless very muddy, I don't take them off when I come in from outside. We have mostly tiles on floor downstairs. I don't put feet up on couch etc. If I'm gardening, I might put on old boots and take off when I come in. We live in a rural area and have a solid fuel stove - I'm constantly going in and out of the house - getting fuel, bringing out ash, emptying compost bucket and lots of other short trips outside - much handier to leave shoes on!

Grandchildren take off their shoes when visiting as that seems to be the practice in their house.

I put my shoes on in the morning and take them off when I go to bed at night. They go with me wherever I go all day.

Why? - because getting them on and off is a painful palaver and involves grabbers and a long-handled shoehorn. Twice a day is more than enough.

Always have taken shoes off at front door. I have persian rugs and would cry if anyone walked over them with outdoor shoes on. Shoes upstairs a no no too. Just the way we roll

If I’m going out with the dog and I’m wearing boots or wellies, I put them on in the porch and leave my slippers there, ready for when I get back. Otherwise, I slip shoes off just inside the front door and my slippers are there waiting for me.
I don’t care if visitors/family keep their shoes on, unless they’re filthy. It was the main reason we replaced the hall and lounge floors with wood - far easier to clean, especially when DD2’s wheelchair had been through something less than hygienic!

Gosh. That makes me feel like a slob, I love to lie on the sofa in the evening.

Shoes off in the hall then I wear socks slippers or flip flops in the house depending on the time of year. Old shoes by back door for the garden. I put my feet up indoors. I don’t ask people to remove shoes as my floors are easily cleaned.

Same here, clean supportive trainers (with orthotics).
Otherwise I'd be suffering.

We keep our shoes on indoors, during evenings if I put my feet up I am in my cosy slippers.
I fully understand why some people don't wear shoes indoors and expect their guests to remove theirs. I always respect that......... however I am most uncomfortable in walking about in my socks, I need the support of shoes. I know which of my friends and relatives expect me to remove my shoes , so I visit with my indoor shoes ( bought for that purpose) . One of our friends expect shoe removal on arrival and has a shoe jack just inside their front door - a polite reminder! However there is no chair so we have to stand to untie shoe laces and balance as we fish our indoor shoes out from the bag before struggling to put them on - thoughtless...... Yes I think it is . Happy to remove our shoes but our hostess should pay us some consideration and make the job as comfortable as possible. As for being expected to wear slippers they might provide , NO NO NO!!!!!!

Slippers for indoors. Rarely wander about just in socks, and certainly not barefoot, as my feet get too cold, whatever time of year. 😂

Constant battle with DH about wearing outdoor shoes in the house. 50% of the time he takes them off and puts slippers on. The rest of the time he doesn’t. We have tiled floors downstairs so not too much of a problem but I am a bit fussy about dirty floors.

Slippers indoors for me. Hate having bare feet. Take shoes off in the porch usually, but I'm not that fussed. My carpets are ancient.
When lying flat on the sofa (bad back) my slippers are left on unless they actually fall off.

Shoes off on entering, socks or bare feet (in the summer). I keep garden clogs or crocs by the front and back doors for nipping out to do odd jobs outside, otherwise it's ancient trainers or wellies for gardening and horses. And respectable shoes for going out...

I don'r 'expect' guests to take their shoes off but most do offer and I don't say 'no'.

I do try slippers from time to time but it's a faff to take them off and put on outdoor shoes when I'm just nipping outside for a few minutes. I usually abandon them after a day or two.

I'm always amazed at the amount of dirt my vacuum cleaner picks up despite the no shoes in the house rule. I can only assume that it's the cats and the dog that bring it in. Can't make them take their shoes off.

I've always worn outdoor shoes indoors, other than for 3 years when working in Sweden, where every home has a "shoe shrine" in the hallway, where outdoor shoes are exchanged for slippers, largely because polished wooden floors are common, with very little fitted carpet. I would never dream of resting outdoor shoes on furniture, and would only do that in slippers or stocking feet.

We have a tiled vestibule at the front door, so shoes go off and onto a shoe rack there, and at the back door, we have a large walk-in cupboard, so muddy boots etc go in there and we wear slippers around the house. I wonder what some of you would do if you visited countries where it is a definite no-no to wear shoes indoors, and slippers are provided for guests to put on immediately they enter the house.

No shoes are worn indoors here they are kept in the hallway we take shoes off when we come in and put our slippers on. If we go in the garden shoes go back on I don’t think that’s too complicated or is it?
