More royal pomp and circumstance.

I genuinely felt upset and then angry at today's royal event in Edinburgh. How much of our money did it cost?
We have already had a fortune spent on the Queen's funeral and the King's coronation at a time when families
can't afford to feed their children and people are waiting for years for essential medical treatment. When the BBC commentator announced that the eyes of the world were on Scotland I had to turn off the TV.

King Charles has done so much for the Princess trust and many other charities give him peace to get on with the job royals are bringing in so much revenue to Great Britain
why grump about that?

What’s wrong with you V be afraid, be very afraid

Agreed- very good for international relations, too. It makes the UK stand out because it is so very good at that sort of thing. Long may it continue!

Another hear, hear, for PollyJ..and MilestOne…
Lighten up Grans…We should be celebrating all what our beautiful country has to offer and that includes our Royal Family…What family doesn’t have it’s faults? They provide a huge source of income to Britain and who can fault the Princes Trust and all the good work that the other working Royals do? So many of our friends living around the world remind us of how lucky we are. I love our history and our traditions. Each to their own. Just wish some of you weren’t so bitter and cutting…

I really enjoyed watching it on TV yesterday and think Scotland did a grand job,I just wish we could have heard more of the bagpipes without, the TV presenters talking over them,I watched with my hubby hoping it would jog some memory's for him as he loves anything to do with the Royal family, and we both love all the pomp

Milest0ne Thu 06-Jul-23 13:49:03

How much money did overseas visitors spend in Scotland or London during the coronation event? A lot of people were able to earn money during that time. The monarchy is good advertising for the hospitality industry. How do you put a price on that?

Totally agree. Let him pay if he wants all this. It’s also past time to do this ‘conqueror’s fealty’ stuff with the other countries. Outdated nonsense now, and the cost while so many other things apparently ‘can;t be afforded’ is absurd.

It's not particularly what he wants - it's ancient ceremonies and traditions that we do here in this country.

Why should a Head of State pay for his own inauguration?

OhBeJoyful Thu 06-Jul-23 12:50:50

Well I think we're really lucky to be British! Our Monarchy, and the ceremonies that go with that, bring in a lot of income via tourism, and me a lot of pleasure! I think Charles is a really kindly king who has wisdom through age but is still open to new ideas to improve our world

Pollyj Thu 06-Jul-23 12:38:30

Carnivals and festivals? We choose whether or not to pay to attend those and they are for ‘us’. None of the royal stuff is a choice or for ‘us’.

I do think that things could be done a lot more quietly and with less pomp and money thrown at it. It is very hard to watch these expensive ceremonies when counting the pennies at home. Can I afford washing powder?

Plunger Thu 06-Jul-23 12:27:44

So shall we stop the State Opening of Parliament, cheese rolling downhill, local carnivals/ festivals, basically anything that might actually cost money to put on and be enjoyed by lots of people. What a miserable life to look forward to. What about all the money spent dealing with Stop Oil demonstrations preventing people getting to hospitals, funerals, work etc?

Eloethan Thu 06-Jul-23 12:24:51

A total waste of money, and extremely inappropriate given the parlous state of the UK at the moment.

Callistemon21 Thu 06-Jul-23 12:21:15

Interesting, I had no idea KC3 was a direct descendant of Mary Queen of Scots. But I think there should be at least a dozen (?) greats there.

Possibly.

And, more interestingly, it is through the German line of the family!

I’ve been wondering where we’d be now if Mary Queen of Scots had been successful in her aim to be the Queen of England, too….would England be trying to gain independence from Scotland? ( must apologise by the way: all the work on my house and lack of sleep is playing havoc with my thinking…even more so than usual that is…)

Well, her son became King of England and Scotland.

And Wales.

If this ceremony hadn't taken place that would have been wrong. It is all part of being British, Charles has a lot of Scottish blood. It is a small cost compared to what is spent by Presidents and Despots.

Can you explain the Scottish blood bit please I know he has lots of German blood ?

Mary, Queen of Scots, is his Great-great-great-great Grandmother

Sadly though I'm fascinated by history, I find the RF an anachronism.

Oh- we missed that here. I love all the pomp stuff, great show. Must see if I can get some British tv.

Just a point. King Charles is King of Scots, not King of Scotland.

I find it annoying that the BBC found it necessary to send a London-based presenter and presumably a crew when we have perfectly good presenters and crew working for BBC Scotland. Waste of licence money IMO. angry

They have a lot of staff who must be twiddling their thumbs after Glastonbury, Wheniwasyourage

Apparently the BBC sent 500 staff members there.

welbeck Wed 05-Jul-23 22:59:32

Charles' mother's mother was scottish.
you don't have to go back to mary queen of scots.

The “Not my king” chants and banners were just examples of extremely bad manners. People have the right to their opinions, but this was not the time to air them. Just plain rude.

Grandma70s Wed 05-Jul-23 22:27:13

I enjoyed it very much. The music was terrific, and the whole event lent some colour to grey old Edinburgh.

NanKate Wed 05-Jul-23 22:17:59

I love all the pomp and the rituals. Long live the King 🤴 and Queen 🫅
