Dogs in coffee shops

AIBU objecting to dogs being allowed inside coffee shops/pubs etc, in fact anywhere serving food? I just don’t feel this is hygienic especially when dogs occupy bench seats and are fed treats from the tables. Visiting a new bakery and coffee shop for the first time I was nearly knocked over by a small terrier who ‘just loves to say hello to everyone’. It belongs to the owner who lets it wander about at will. I won’t be going back there but it is increasingly difficult to find dog-free places as the ‘dogs welcome’ sign proliferates. Before dog owners retaliate, I DO NOT hate dogs! We have a delightful cocker spaniel in the family which charms everyone but we always seek outside covered areas when eating out ourselves or she stays at home. Is it just me?

It feels like dog central where I live. Their owners seem to imagine that I will find their dogs as delightful as they do.
Can I ask dog owners, I was under the impression that dogs enjoyed going for walks, so why are some of them in prams nowadays?

Here we go again. This same question crops up every often and always provokes extreme responses from either side of the argument. Personally, it doesn't bother me, although we don't take our dog out to cafes or restaurants unless we cannot avoid it - for instance, if we are travelling in our motorhome, and then we would try to pick places which have outside seating wherever possible. I would never dream of letting him sit on seats, be fed from the table or bother other customers. Not dog owners are like those you've described.

Yes I do object and now don’t frequent those places. Guide dogs are an exception.
We went to a dog friendly restaurant once in N Wales. A couple sat near us with a lovely well behaved dog. Every time a particular waitress can through she stroked the dog. When she gave me my meal I asked her if she had washed her hands having seen her about a minute previously tickling the dog. By the look on her face she had not. The manager came, we had a new meal and it was free.

I am severely allergic to all dogs.

I always have my medication with me, but it is becoming more problematic.

I agree with this. I always look for somewhere that is not dog friendly.
Horses for courses, I don't want to eat around dogs.

All animals should be banned from cafes and restaurants with the exception of service dogs.

We went out for a lovely meal in a really nice restaurant in the Lake district two weeks ago and there were dogs everywhere, barking at each other, people had tripped up over the dogs leads as the people had tied them to the table leg. One dog lifted its leg and urinated on the table leg.

Dogs do not belong in restaurants. If people want to take their dogs everywhere with them then for god's sake, sit at an outside table. They may love their pets but when paying high prices for a meal I for one do not want to see dogs sniffing each others backsides.

By the way I am a dog lover and have had German Shepherd dogs all our married life. When we took them out we always sat outside to eat with the other patrons with their dogs. When we ate in, we left them at home.

no I don't think dogs should be allowed in cafes can just imagine it lifting it's leg against the table...not very hygenic

I always try to do this, but nowadays dog free establishments are becoming few and far between, especially in holiday type areas.

I live 5/10minutes from the coast, and cannot think of any coffee/tea rooms or casual eateries where dogs are not permitted.

Years ago people would never take a dog into a restaurant but now it seems that many places are overrun with dogs.
I went to one last year where there were more dogs than people. We were shown to a table to find a dog sitting underneath as the people at the next table had brought in three dogs.
It seems to be getting out of hand in some places now.
I do like like dogs but they should be treated respectfully as dogs and not as people.

Gingster Fri 12-Jul-24 17:05:56

I agree. I’m a dog owner and only take her to outside cafes.
It is very unhygienic to have dogs in restaurants.
It’s becoming so common-place to be dog friendly.

RosiesMaw2 Fri 12-Jul-24 17:09:12

Thank you Misinterpreted - that was exactly my reaction.

RosiesMaw2 Fri 12-Jul-24 17:11:03

Next it will be the pro’s and cons of Wetherspoons, big dogs which jump up or slobber or little dogs that yap. {sigh} 🐶

Desdemona Fri 12-Jul-24 17:13:45

I wouldn't go into a restaurant that allowed dogs, simple as that (service dogs obviously are a different matter.)

I also hate, with a passion, those extendable dog leads and think they should be banned as they are a huge trip hazard.

I like dogs though!

Casdon Fri 12-Jul-24 17:15:04

It depends on the dog. There’s a beautiful spaniel owned by a customer at the pub I go to. She has a bowl of water, then she lies down under the table while her owners eat their meal, there’s never a peep out of her. She brings joy to the other customers, who know her and make a fuss of her on her way in and out - for some the contact is important as they live alone, and a dog is an ice breaker. I think owners are too forgiving if their dog is badly behaved, that’s the problem rather than the concept.

maddyone Fri 12-Jul-24 17:18:29

I think there are many responsible dog owners who wouldn’t dream of taking their dog into a restaurant, cafe, or pub serving food, as shown by responses on here from many Gransnetters. However there seem to be an increasing number of entitled people who think that their dog should be allowed in eating establishments, allowed to sit on chairs, and even eat from the plates used for customers.
I’d like to know when the owners/managers of eating establishments will realise that they have a duty to provide clean and safe premises where food is served, and having dogs inside such establishments does not support that.
I would like dogs to be banned from inside all establishments serving food and from all food shops too.
Except service dogs.

Smileless2012 Fri 12-Jul-24 17:19:19

My reaction too Rosies and Misinterpreted. We never feed our dogs from the table at home and rarely take them into cafes, restaurants or pubs but if we do, they are not allowed on the seats.

Try finding one!

Ladyripple Fri 12-Jul-24 17:20:46

I love dogs, wouldn’t be without mine.I only take him in restaurants on holiday, when he is not allowed to stay on his own in the accommodation.I never take him with me otherwise.
I was at an Outlet Centre near me recently,it was busy and so many dogs! they were even in the shops.Since when did dogs like going shopping? Mine likes a walk every day in the fields and lanes near our house and sniffing, proper doggy things, not being dragged around shops. It unnerved me at the Outlet Centre, lots of dogs barking and with owners who had no control of them.

You won’t find one in my area, JaneJudge I can’t think of a cafe or a coffee shop that doesn’t allow dogs in I hate it and really don’t think animals of any kind should be in restaurants cafes or any eating place
And
I don’t want them in shops either sniffing around the clothes and I have seen a couple have a pee it’s just not on Leave your dogs at home I never took my dog shopping or out to eat she was happy at home Some dogs especially if they get wet don’t smell the best They come in the shop with them in pushchairs or sitting on their shoulders 🤷🏼‍♂️
Dogs have become people they will be putting the lead on the owner in a decades time

MissInterpreted Fri 12-Jul-24 17:35:06

BlueBelle - you would have to make an exception for service dogs, which by law have to be allowed into those establishments.

JaneJudge Fri 12-Jul-24 17:35:27

yeah especially those poodles bluebelle I hear they are clever

I've never taken mine out shopping or for dinner with me either fwiw. I don;t think she'd enjoy it

GrannyGravy13 Fri 12-Jul-24 17:43:06

I grew up with dogs at home, when first married we had German Shepherds.

My asthma became steadily worse and I had a further round of allergy tests (first time I was 13) and it became apparent that my asthma was exacerbated by dogs.

It was heartbreaking to re-home our dogs, I adore all animals but would rather stay out of hospital and off of steroids.

gangy5 Fri 12-Jul-24 17:54:28

30 years ago hubby and I ran a restaurant. At that time dogs weren't allowed in any premises selling food. Does anyone know when or if permission was officially given to allow this??
All wrong in my view.
