Maybe the brother can re arrange the wedding like all those people had to re arrange their appointments when the M25 came to a standstill!

Cressida Gethin jailed for 4 years.

Judge Christopher Hahir’s summing up & sentencing can be downloaded here www.judiciary.uk/judgments/rex-v-hallam-and-others/

The document is 23 pages long & well written, the reason & logic flows well. It is most illuminating & gives a reasoned judgement about the sentencing.

Excellent news!

Oh dear, who’s going to throw the orange powder/paint over everybody now?

Entitled people…

This.

As everyone who travels on the M25 knows, it is impossible to gauge how long a journey will take because of constant hold-ups at almost any time except the middle of the night.
As for ambulances getting through, where there is no hard shoulder because of smart motorway, cars will always move out the way for an ambulance. And if a woman is in labour in a car/ cancer appt etc, ring the police - they will get you through.
So all in all, people prepared to go to prison for trying to draw attention to global warming for the sake of our grandchildren don't seem as entitled as those who are destroying the planet.

Dillonsgranma Fri 26-Jul-24 12:25:41

Well said Rosie51
Couldn’t have put it better myself

MissInterpreted Fri 26-Jul-24 12:26:53

They haven't just been protesting on the M25 though - protests have been held in a number of cities. I wonder if anyone who missed vital appointments, things like funerals etc, would be quite so forgiving. How would you feel if it had happened to you? It is possible to be concerned about the state of our planet, while still not condoning the actions of this lot.

The UK has & continues to reduce use fossil fuels & the clear upward trend of use lies with the rapidly expanding economies of countries such as China & India.

I might be more impressed by the JSO protestors if they pitched up outside the Chinese & other relevant embassies in the UK to make their voices heard, or popped over to said nations to make their case outside their democratic parliaments & Govt institutions.

GrannySquare Fri 26-Jul-24 12:37:12

Judge Hahir’s summary speaks of the conspiracy to protest on the M25 & effectively grid lock the South East. To this end the group had access to an algorithm & organisational intelligence to show this as a realistic threat & this evidence was presented to the Court.

Other JSO events have actually or planned to enter & disrupt UK airspace.

Again, take a look at the Judge’s comments & read forthcoming trial reporting/summary judgements with care & interest.

No sympathy at all, her mother just looked ridiculous when she put out that statement. One particular person caught up in it was on the way to a cancer treatment, it got put back weeks because of her and her mates

Musicgirl Fri 26-Jul-24 12:46:44

Poor diddums. What about the poor man who missed his father's funeral because of their antics? I know where my sympathy lies.

SillyNanny321 Fri 26-Jul-24 12:55:43

Oh poor girl, how sad, too bad!

Well said, GrannySquare!
If they protested in said countries they’d probably be either shot or just disappear. Perhaps we could all crowdfund their trip. Not by plane, of course.

We are all going to miss a great deal more appointments and other necessities of life if this crazy Net Zero agenda is pursued. We are told that the 'science is settled' but it is NOT, the 'science is silenced' would be a more accurate description. There are many, many reputable scientists who have lost status and livelihood through speaking out. They are labelled 'Climate Change Deniers', as if that is tantamount to heresy, and turned into pariahs while we are all pushed into being very, very afraid of man-made global warming - hence the over-the-top actions of these young people. This agenda is being pushed for a reason - there are huge vested interests in solar farms et al (although I'm puzzled how all those lithium batteries are going to be made without oil, and in a way friendly to the environment and the miners.)
There are many scientists who say that carbon in the atmosphere has been much higher in ages past, and in any case does no harm - maybe good, because it stimulates plant growth. Yes, the earth may be slightly warming, but it has been much hotter in the past - climate change is natural, and down to the sun. Meanwhile we, who produce I understand about 2% of the world's carbon emissions, are going to impoverish our country, while China gallops ahead. Can it be in anyone's best interests for the West voluntarily to surrender its economic power to totalitarian states, for some ideological purpose, that is highly questionable, if not downright crazy?
Please do not misunderstand me, I am not saying we aren't doing huge harm to our world, but all this Net Zero rubbish is taking attention away from pollution and destruction of our environment. Where are the bees and insects this summer? And the butterflies? I've seen hardly any. What is going on? If the insects die out, we go with them, and far quicker than with 'global warming.'
Please take a look at the video CLIMATE CHANGE, THE COLD TRUTH - you should be able to find it on YouTube, unless of course it has been taken down due to censorship - oh, sorry, hush my mouth, 'disinformation'.

Absolutely no sympathy for her. She caused massive disruption to many thousands. Some, as outlined above, missed crucial appointments, the delay of which might mean they don’t survive their illness. Shame on her and her kind.

We all know that climate change is very, very serious, and that drastic changes have to be made quickly to how we live our lives, but this kind of behaviour is unhelpful and pointless. Education, not bullying tactics and disruptions are what is needed

As an aside, I wonder how the wedding guests are getting to the venue, how many wedding cars are booked, is the food and drink for the reception all sourced locally, or will air/road miles be involved getting it? Their hypocrisy never ceases to amaze me.

Her actions and that of others, cost the country billions, notwithstanding the lives that may have been saved in an emergency. She should be ashamed of herself. I think more tears should have bern added to her sentence for the financial losses, disruption and inconvenience caused to many people.

They would be arrested as most of these countries are not as tolerant as the UK. Serves them right. A strong message needed to be sent. Well done, judge.

Ziplock, as we plan for a family wedding, you ask a very good question at 14:04.

Glenfinnan Fri 26-Jul-24 15:28:26

Good… they caused so much disruption to so many!

DrWatson Fri 26-Jul-24 15:39:33

I was going to put something critical about JSO, and Extinction Rebellion, their utter stupidity, and indeed the glaring hypocrisy of their leaders, but I see the vast majority have already posted just that!!

I read the other day that apparently we (UK) are one of the world leaders in finding alternative tech to reduce emissions, and finding new solutions to those age-old problems.

It's also quite apparent that nobody from JSO has yet bicycled across to Beijing to glue themselves to a main road over THERE -- why not we wonder?

Oh, and we'd better hope that Chump doesn't win in November, he's been promising to burn more oil and use more coal (a couple of 'Swing States' have some coal mining) as soon as he takes the Oath ("I Donald Chump, solemnly swear to promote the interests of me and my family as soon as I can get my backside in the White House, and screw everyone else, like I said 20 years ago, it's poor people's fault they're poor, they're stupid").

Perhaps the many thousands of owners of private jets could be targeted, and not the people who save all year to be able to go on holiday via an EasyJet plane.

Politicians are telling the truth. We are all aware of climate change. I think the speaker who came to the WI meeting sounds somewhat like the Just Stop Oil protesters. Maybe she’s a member.

Anyone who takes unecessary flights should stop doing it, be they private jet users or holidaymakers. I don't care if they have saved all year, people rarely speak about the pollution caused by planes.
Obviously every plane is polluting the atmosphere but many of us who live under flight paths can actually also see fuel being dumped.
I should add that I am not a barmy Just Stop Oil or XR person, just a normal human being who doesns't want the planet to be polluted any more.
And I no longer fly.

Baggs obviously doesn't live a flood-prone area or one hit by weather catastrophes. Anyone who can live comfortably above water level and away from hurricanes or bush fires will be OK - they're all right Jack.
Personally I'm safe from the weather - though I hate the heatwaves that are increasing every year. But many, many millions of people all over the world are suffering natural disasters and dying because of conditions that are completely beyond their control. They usually don't have the money to move to safer places and will simply die in droughts, floods, typhoons, fires and famines.
