Why do people keep saying this

(165 Posts)

I know before I ask that I am being unreasonable about what I am going to say.
I don’t know why, but it makes my blood boil when posters start their reply to a post with ‘this.’
Why on earth do you do it? We all have enough of a brain to know that your answer agrees and/or relates to the post it is answering. It just seems a stupid and pointless thing to do. Why not just say ‘I agree’ if you really think it’s necessary?

guess it's the youngsters' equivalent of ditto.
no good getting het up about it.
styles and customs, terms, change.

I would say it is the verbal equivalent of a tick✔️ or thumbs up 👍 “like”:sign

Well, it gets me het up, rightly or wrongly! I don’t normally notice anything annoying in posts,q I just read them and joy them. Poor spelling or grammar may be there but if it is, it goes over my head. But ‘this’ REALLY gets to me!

Crikey!

I agree with the OP.

Oops, sorry! I am occasionally guilty as charged although I am not young.

It is something that is used quite often on here.

Jackiest Wed 31-Jul-24 07:21:54

In response to your post I would just like to say, is this necessary.

TerriBull Wed 31-Jul-24 07:26:40

I read it as a more emphatic version of agree, "this" encapsulates all the points I would make, perhaps it should be preceded by "exsctly" for even more emphasis. I'm probably over thinking it though before your post it hadn't occurred to me to question it.

Yes, I have noticed that recently. I came across a new one the other day 'trail'. Also, the Americans say 'period'. All beyond me. So,............grin

There are some things that irritate me a bit, too (‘this’ isn’t one of them - I use it myself sometimes), but not to the point where I would risk making posters feel self-conscious by saying their communication style is stupid and pointless.

It’s really unpleasant on here just now. I hoped that when people accepted the election result it might settle down, but it hasn’t.

Maggiemaybe Wed 31-Jul-24 07:54:17

Why on earth do you do it?

Why on earth shouldn’t we? confused It’s as valid a way as any to make it clear we agree with a post.

“Period” is the US equivalent of “full stop”

Full stop.

Did you get up on the wrong side this morning? Chill 🙄

Never noticed it, I have to confess. I don’t read the posts that closely I suppose. Too busy doing several things at once !

Joseann Wed 31-Jul-24 08:17:17

Maybe because four little letters is quicker to type than, I agree with *the poster above*.
Some posters might be in a hurry and not have time to write a fuller comment.

Good grief, there are more important things to stress about!

Language is continually evolving and I see nothing wrong with writing this instead of ditto.

This.

I think it's because there is no like or thank you button as on Mumsnet.

It is no different to saying 'absolutely' or 'exactly', 'yup' or any other one word, signifying aagreement.

As we are always saying, language changes all the time. that is why we do not speak Anglo-Saxon.

Perhaps you could ask GNHQ if we could have a Like or Thank you button on GN.

The Ladybird Book of Mindfulness is very helpful.
