Why do people keep saying this

I know before I ask that I am being unreasonable about what I am going to say.
I don’t know why, but it makes my blood boil when posters start their reply to a post with ‘this.’
Why on earth do you do it? We all have enough of a brain to know that your answer agrees and/or relates to the post it is answering. It just seems a stupid and pointless thing to do. Why not just say ‘I agree’ if you really think it’s necessary?

I must admit that I can't be bothered to get het up about things like 'this'. Language changes and evolves, most of which I quite like.

Good grief, there are more important things to stress about!

Language is continually evolving and I see nothing wrong with writing this instead of ditto.

“This” is going to worry me all day.

Noticed it. Think it looks rather silly. Also often, who cares? These aren’t straw polls.

YABU!

And this should be in pedants.

I largely steer clear of that section!

I am all for there being that section, but it is mainly not for me.
You may enjoy it OP.

It irritates me. I don't think it's a younger generation thing either.

However just because it is irritating to me makes it my problem .

So I just silently get irritated.

I suspect many of us might irritate other GN members with our style of posts. I'm probably both an irritant - and at the same time, one of the irritated.

I do think you are being unreasonable, because social media invites all-comers and people have their own individual style of posting and responding.

You have demanded to know "why on earth do you do it?" I have occasionally used this technique but mostly not. Why do I do it? Well - I haven't thought too deeply about it but I use this simple word to emphasise agreement, because it's in vogue and understood. And I suspect most posters do it for the same reason. I don't believe they do it to annoy or offend, it's just a typical social media tool.

You say it makes your blood boil. I don't know what to say about that.

However, as Doodledog says, you are risking making posters feel self-conscious about their posting style by suggesting it is a stupid and pointless thing to do.

Doodledog Wed 31-Jul-24 10:33:53

It's shorthand for 'this is what I think', and acknowledges that someone else has made the point that you are making. IMO it's far more polite than just ignoring someone's point and saying the same thing yourself as though they didn't exist.

I must be very placid I just read posts and move on, 🤪

I read it as a more emphatic version of agree, "this" encapsulates all the points I would make, perhaps it should be preceded by "exsctly" for even more emphasis. I'm probably over thinking it though before your post it hadn't occurred to me to question it.

This. So there grin

In response to your post I would just like to say, is this necessary.

Obviously I thought so or I wouldn’t have posted it, What gives you the right to question what people post?
