Why do people keep saying this

I know before I ask that I am being unreasonable about what I am going to say.
I don’t know why, but it makes my blood boil when posters start their reply to a post with ‘this.’
Why on earth do you do it? We all have enough of a brain to know that your answer agrees and/or relates to the post it is answering. It just seems a stupid and pointless thing to do. Why not just say ‘I agree’ if you really think it’s necessary?

I sometimes do it....it means 8 absolutely agree with what a PP has posted....couldn't have said it better myself....and feel strongly enough that I want to post ....I mean if that gets you het up .....I think you need to calm down a bit...sort your stress levels out a bit

Sounds a bit owlish to me Callistemon213
I could answer it with IDGTH ,which sounds Welshish and is I don’t give two hoots😄

I like owls.

Especially Sarah, Percy and Bill and their Mummy.

Good grief, there are more important things to stress about!

Language is continually evolving and I see nothing wrong with writing this instead of ditto.

This

🤗

🤣🤣🤣

There are so many more things happening in the world to get het up about something so trivial, surely?

Ok, you’ve all proved your point and there’s no need to keep on. As for those who kept writing ‘this’ on its own just to annoy me, well, on the contrary, it made me laugh! Also, seeing ‘this’ so often in your replies has made me almost immune to it and I truly don’t give a toss one way or the other about it now! So, a BIG thank you and I will try to stop being so silly!

Callistemon213 Wed 31-Jul-24 20:32:15

Oh good!! 🙂

Maggiemaybe Wed 31-Jul-24 20:34:33

Aw, we weren’t doing it to be mean, Crossstitchfan, and I’m glad it gave you a laugh.

Nice news!

I agree with you . I prefer to type ‘I agree* or give a 👍

Ziplok Wed 31-Jul-24 20:47:22

Seems a pointless thing to get het up about, really. To be honest, as there’s no agree button or like button, I suppose “this” sums up agreement to the post in question. I suppose you could type “agree” instead, if you wanted to.

Ziplok Wed 31-Jul-24 20:49:40

Sorry, Crossstitchfan, just seen your last reply. Sorry if I’ve come across as rude, certainly not intended. I really should read the whole thread before posting, I suppose 😂.

Perhaps you could ask GNHQ if we could have a Like or Thank you button on GN.

This seems like a good idea in principle, and have at times thought 'what a good idea',

but having been a member of another board with "like" buttons (not MNet) it had become a sort of popularity contest to get lots of "likes", particularly the way it was laid out.

Callistemon213 Wed 31-Jul-24 21:06:30

I think MN has thank you rather than like, which is good and not so divisive.

I like the thank you button on MN. I wish we had the same set up on GN as we do on MN, in that we know when someone has quoted us. It makes the site more interesting and can lead to some good discussions/jokes. I suppose the threads on MN tend to be much longer though (often up to 20 odd pages) so perhaps that's the reason.

Wyllow3 Wed 31-Jul-24 23:47:00

20 pages? 😳

nanna8 Thu 01-Aug-24 05:45:38

I have suggested a ‘like’ button several times but I get howled down by people who are worrying about gangs and favouritism . Not that any other social media outlets have this issue , must be the particular people on here.

MissAdventure Thu 01-Aug-24 09:29:51

On the contrary, I think a like button could help, in that respect.

Maggiemaybe Thu 01-Aug-24 10:37:55

I’m a bit puzzled by the MN thank you button. I’ve had a few thank yous when I was just commenting, not being helpful at all, so I suppose it’s just a like under another name.

It’s a like from me as well, Wyllow3. smile
