We are due to complete on the sale of our house on Friday. We don't bank online and as the money's to be paid into our personal account, we asked our solicitor to send us the bank details we gave them at the beginning of the process, to check everything is correct.

We've received a copy of the form we supposedly signed but it only has one signature which isn't mine, the account and sort code numbers are incorrect as is the contact telephone number.

We've spoken to our solicitor whose assured us no money will be transferred without checking on the day that the details are correct, but I'm not feeling at all secure.

I’m quite a tech fan having worked in the City for over 20 years. When I left in my thirties to set up my own business, rumour was touch typists would be extinct due to computers replacing us. Never happened. My experience of online banking is not particularly confident in the safety of it but I cannot purchase anything online without them double checking it is really me spending by asking me to check my phone, log in to online banking and confirm I wish to purchase. When I confirm that it is my wish to purchase, they authorise the payment to the seller. Lots of scammers on line but banks seem to do their best to protect their customers.
Having said that, totally understand the reluctance to do payments online. Husband bought a few items from a greengrocers on Saturday and was short of cash so tapped his card for the first time. The greengrocers charged an extra £30. He will never tap again. Refund promised but not received yet.
Be careful everyone.

Smileless, we've recently been through this stressful process of house purchasing ourselves, and it was a nightmare! Definitely, never doing it again!

I lost count how many times we had to correct our solicitors, and point out their errors. Seems they do a lot of copy & pasting, even with important legal documents & letters!

We had whole paragraphs in letters that did not relate to us, or our house purchase, which was rather confusing. When we pointed them out, they said they use the same letter format for all, and we should simply ignore what wasn't relevant to us! With the amount of money we had to pay for their services I would've expected letters written personally to us!

In some of the legal forms we had to sign and complete, we had incorrect vendor's names & addresses, as well as incorrect vendor's solicitors details! When we pointed out these errors, we didn't even receive an apology, or an explanation! They simply forwarded new forms and said, 'please find enclosed the amended form'!

It's simply not good enough! We put our trust in people like solicitors, when we are dealing with legally binding documents/contracts, and we have to pay a fortune for their services! I do wonder how on earth some of them ever managed to become qualified in the first place! It's frightening!

Anyway, Smileless, I wish you all the best for your completion on Friday, then you can put all the stress behind you and look forward to getting the keys to your new home!

I am so relieved that you have exchanges smileless, the process is stressful enough without having to check and double check the solicitors competency

My own money transfer had me shaking in my boots so I actually went to my halifax bank and the transfer was done by two people, including bank manager, working together. I was so scared of making even a one digit mistake

You could do with writing to the senior partner about the breach of confidentiality. You could have lost all your money because there was not due diligence at their end

Go to the solicitor and demand them make things right, what has happened is a breach of confidentiality.
