Can somebody confirm that today is 7th NOVEMBER please?
I have just 'experienced' 3 different supermarket ads in the last 30 minutes!
Can we not just have November PLEASE?
By 25th December we are surely all heartily sick of it...

Sainsburys have got real Christmas trees in as well 😳🎄

knspol Sun 10-Nov-24 14:50:36

Local garden centre full of Christmas trees yesterday.
Have any of you seen the Waitrose Christmas advert yet? I saw it yesterday and it had me in floods of tears. I would suggest if anybody has recently lost a partner then don't watch. Maybe I'm being overly sensitive but I cannot imagine why anybody would release such an advert that (imo) will cause distress t so many people.

i am not a christmas person, not a bah humbug either, still get cards and gifts for gc. i was sent previews of the christmas adverts in emails, i hate the morrisons one, i do not have a tv and use catch up on my laptop for the few things that i do watch, so any adverts that come on i just click the sound off.

Well after a particularly upsetting morning I was silly enough to read this thread. Only one nice positive message. With all the sad things happening in the world today, surely Christmas is not something to moan about, I cannot even understand why someone would bin a Christmas card that has presumably meant something to the person that has gone to the trouble of buying, writing and posting it to someone who means something to the sender.

LindyB Sun 10-Nov-24 15:29:15

Just read the Christmas pudding thread, made me feel much better!

MissAdventure Sun 10-Nov-24 15:29:32

People who mean something to me don't buy me cards, because I don't want them to.

My next door neighbour has only this year understood that I mean it.
Luckily, she doesnt really like sending them either.
Win/win

Morrisons has REAL Christmas trees on sale!!!!!!!!!

B&Q have had real ones 3 or more weeks ago.
Went B&M a week ago and they had them too. Nearly all of the store is taken up with Christmas stuff.

Thanks Jaxjacky .
When I watched the Waitrose ad I couldn’t figure out why I didn’t ‘get it* why it was sad.

GrammarGrandma Sun 10-Nov-24 17:11:54

I haven't seen a single Christmas ad but Waitrose had small Christmas trees in pots today.

I think are are getting mixed up with something else knspol, because the Waitrose advertisement is an interactive ‘who dunnit’ about a missing pudding.

I love it too - it reminds me of my mum , now gone, and the anticipation of my children many many years ago - they were relatively unspoilt and. Christmas was a joyous family gathering 😇

Indigo8 Sun 10-Nov-24 17:42:40

Bah! Humbug!

I hate the supermarket Christmas ads. I found the Sainsbury's football in the WWI trenches a particularly tasteless way to boost their sales. Three of my great uncles were killed in WWI and one of my grandfathers suffered from PTSD.

There is no reliable evidence that the football match even took place although it is mentioned "Goodbye to all That" by Robert Graves.

I know, I am a miserable wotsit.

Sorry you had an unsettling morning LindyB - sometimes those kinds of mornings colour the rest of your day.

I think generally it's more the commodification of Christmas that gets to people.

I don't really know what the true spirit of Christmas is - it means different things to different people.

- and for some, it's a sad and lonely time of year.

Anyway, I hope that whatever upset your morning, eventually loses its hold on you. I've had those mornings / days, so feel for you.

Those of you who hate the supermarket adverts might like the family shop one I linked to earlier...

This little Welsh shop have made one each year for the last 7 years or so.
You can see their family grow up year on year if you watch them.
I think they are rather nice - they could be about any little family.

Fleur20 Sun 10-Nov-24 17:57:39

LindyB.. I thoroughly enjoy Christmas.. between 18th December and 6th January... NOT from the first week in November!
People have so much pressure just getting through the week at the moment.. piling on about an occasion that is still 6 weeks away is too much.
How do we keep Christmas special and magical for children when the tv is screaming at us from now on.
Just sad for parents of young ones...

Shall have a look - thanks for the link!

For me, it's not so much the supermarket Christmas ads as the whole Supermarket-Christmas schtick.

Dianehillbilly1957 Sun 10-Nov-24 18:31:02

I loathe Christmas too, mostly because I'm already sick of shops full of stuff starting August/September, now the TV adverts begin and it's still early November. The date for Christmas never changes so we definitely don't need reminding. Like many others I'm sick of it long before the day arrives! And it's only one blinking day! It should all be banned until 1st of December.

MissAdventure Sun 10-Nov-24 18:35:35

I think we'll need a thread for loathers.
Then we can moan to our heart's content, without upsetting people who love Christmas.

I received my first Christmas card today 🎄

Crikey! 🙄

You are lucky to get any post. Even living only a mile from the town centre, post office and sorting office, we have not had any mail for two weeks and I suspect that we only got it then because there was a letter in a House of Commons envelope. I haven't even had any birthday cards, except those delivered by hand.

BlueBelle Sun 10-Nov-24 18:39:52

I agree with the loathers of the Christmas ads especially in November
Awful

I didn't realise there were so many of us. Any time I say I hate xmas, everyone is always shocked.

BlueBelle Sun 10-Nov-24 19:06:13

Me too MissI I thought I was a real minority

Indigo8 Sun 10-Nov-24 19:27:50

I don't loathe Christmas when I am able to share children's wonder and enthusiasm which is lovely. I spent my working life having to work nearly every Christmas so I still like being able to do the traditional things on the actual day especially now I have grandchildren.

It doesn't stop me hating Christmas TV ads though I hope my views are not upsetting any true Christmas lovers.

TiggyW Sun 10-Nov-24 21:14:06

Have you seen the current price of postage stamps!?😳 I only send a handful of Christmas cards nowadays, usually as close to the 25th as possible!
