Yesterday was a wet windy grey day and I was thinking how lovely it would be to put the tree up but as a family we have always waited for the first weekend in December , until this year both my daughters have just sent me photos of their Christmas trees they put up yesterday [ grin ]

Love it!

As long as they don't play americanised synthetic Christmas Music in shopping centres - do what you want.

Ah well. That didn’t work, did it?! I was referring to miss Chatelaine’s take on her Christmas festivities , which sound lovely.

Monica said The problem we have found in recent years is that everyone is buying their tree earlier and earlier and now your chances of getting a decent real tree if you leave buying it after the beginning of December is more and more difficult.

If you have outdoor space, a shed or garage, buy a tree when they arrive in the shops and store in in a bucket of water until you want to bring it indoors. smile

It’s okay to have your tree up now - the king has got his up! www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cx24z47v0l0o

It's far too early in my view. I love Christmas and its traditions, but there are a few modern customs that I am not so keen on and putting up Christmas trees and decorations in November is one of them. As others have said, the same old Christmas songs, not even Christmas carols, which seem to be playing very loudly on a continuous loop by many establishments at this time of year, is also very aggravating. I find Mariah Carey particularly irritating, but I sometimes think that if I have to hear Noddy Holder screeching "it's CHRISTMASSS...." one more time, l should like to take a pair of pliers to the sound system of the establishment that is playing it
My birthday is on 6th December, so l like to wait a week before the pile of Christmas cards is opened and I would not like the tree and other decorations up before then, either. I would wait an extra week after that date, but DH has always liked the tree up on the weekend after my birthday. I will admit that in 2020 l broke my self-imposed rule and bought a very small pre-lit tree from Amazon and put it up on December 2nd. It was such a grim, miserable year for all of us that l felt a little bit of extra cheer would not go amiss

Why not? I would if it makes you happy 😊

Personally I think November
Is too early. Neighbourshave already decorated their houses and they look lovely. It
2nd week in December is early e ough for us but you'd what you want.

My DS came over yesterday to collect his Christmas tree, and decorations as he stores them in his old room as his own place is quite small. He told my DH today, next year he’ll put the tree up on Christmas Eve and take it down on Boxing Day as his 21month old daughter keeps pulling all the ornaments off😂😂

One trouble with putting the trees up early is that people also take them down early - Boxing Day, very often. It's nice to see them still standing and decorated until the New Year at least - or even Twelfth Night if possible.

Why not ?
I love Christmas decorations .
Ignore other people's negative reactions .
One of my mother's old friends likes to tell me how ridiculous my garden decorations are .
It's your house , money , time and life!

Missiseff Mon 25-Nov-24 18:06:39

Won't the accumulation of dust annoy you?

123kitty Mon 25-Nov-24 22:56:03

You go ahead with the decorations if it’s what you want. Dressing the tree on Xmas eve is the tradition that suits me.

Put the tree up early or put the tree up late. Whichever is fine. Each to his own. Whatever makes you happy.
😁

Our pre lit white birch type tree will be in the conservatory by the end of the week. It’s wet and dismal here. The lights on the tree will cheer me, the reflections are beautiful. Too early? Maybe for some but right for me.

It will be the last year for the tree, a real sadness, climbing aloft to store and retrieve it is becoming less than safe. I’ve already planned flat, lit decorations for the conservatory window ledges which can be stored easily without climbing to retrieve them and yes, they are likely to be installed in November when next year comes.

Surely the desire to bring decorations of any kind into our homes is as different as we all are. Definitely no rights and wrongs.

Yes, put it up, my family have all their trees up and even homes in my street have decorated outside their homes. Christmas only lasts two days this year so get trimming up.

I don't understand that last sentence. If Xmas only lasts two days (?) why put your tree up now?

Christmas is only two days, 25th December and Boxing Day 26th December. All the other days are the run up to Christmas so I think it is lovely to have all the decorations up early to get us in the Christmas spirit.

Also I think anyone who types Xmas instead of Christmas has no respect for Christmas at all. Never shorten the spelling of a holy day.

We've been through the whole X in Xmas debate on here before - and in any case, I'm an atheist, so 'holy' days have no meaning for me.

I've always thought it a lot of effort for only one week, so it would be nice to enjoy it for a month, but I doubt we'll get around to it in the next fewdays . We have decided where it will go.

No- it is the Bank Holidays that last two days. The holy season of Christmas lasts from midnight on Christmas Eve (hence Midnight mass) until midnight on the feast of the Epiphany ie 6th January. In more ancient times it lasted right until Candlemas in February.

This is the Christmas I celebrate, and many others with me.

I am surprised you defend it being a holy day, when in fact it lasts for a whole 12 days!

I love the week between Christmas and New Year! All the cheerful lights and decorations still up, lots of lovely leftovers to eat up, usually plenty of chocolates still left, not much in the way of cooking, no shopping! - except for a few basics.

grannyro Tue 26-Nov-24 09:32:51

Did mine yesterday! Usually wait until 1st week December but I have friends from Holland visiting on Friday and wanted it to be bright and cheerful for their arrival. It really does make me feel more cheerful!!

00opsidia Tue 26-Nov-24 10:38:02

It does spur me on to wrap things, seems less of a chore with the tree up- and a mad panic to do everything at once.Seems lots more peaceful to have four weeks to prepare, not one as my parents used to do.
