Yesterday was a wet windy grey day and I was thinking how lovely it would be to put the tree up but as a family we have always waited for the first weekend in December , until this year both my daughters have just sent me photos of their Christmas trees they put up yesterday [ grin ]

It's Advent Sunday this weekend so go for it if you want to

Christmas is not only two days, Christmas Day and Boxing Day, but in fact 12 days.

Advent is the run up to Christmas Day, starting Dec 1st, and Advent candles in church are lit from the first Sunday in Advent, which this year happens to fall on Dec 1st.

As for abbreviating Christmas to Xmas, no one is being disrespectful, because the X was the Greek letter in the New Testament for the word Christ. Easily googled if you don’t believe me.

Posted a bit soon: X is the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the Greek word Christos from which we get “Christ” in English. It goes into more detail if you look it up on the internet, but really it means that using X is not insulting or belittling the word Christmas.

Part of me longs to get going because of the cheerfulness but I know we'll wait till the w/e of the 14th/15th and even then do things rather piecemeal starting with the tree lights and the wreath on the front door.

My son and his wife in the US have just been complaining to me about people putting Christmas trees & decs up before Thanksgiving! It seems it’s not just the UK that likes to have a moan. grin

Over the last week several neighbours have put their Christmas lights up .
I love it .
It's dark ,
cold and gloomy and the news is depressing - so these bright decorations make everything bright and cheerful .

It’s a bit early IMO. As kids the tree didn’t go up until Christmas Eve and came down on 2nd February (Candlemas). My dear mum was German.
I think that’s a bit extreme so mine goes up in the first week of Dec and comes down on the Epiphany.

Our neighbours still have a skeleton leaning on their tree and pumpkins rotting in the garden. No doubt they will soon be illuminated by Christmas lights around their house. 😏

My sisters house is like Santa's grotto🎅🤶 everywhere, including the garden is twinkling, looks very pretty , bit much for me, little tree up mid December will be fine

I think it’s becoming normal to put trees up earlier and earlier. I remember one colleague telling us that she put her tree up on her daughter’s birthday, (Dec 4th, same as my dad’s) and we all thought she was mad!

But what do they do in those dark January days? It is just as dark and probably much colder? Don't we still need the lights (I think even more) then?

My little potted tree (from last year) will go outside the front door on Sunday. Must find the lights and make sure they’re working!

Daughter and granddaughter put their's up today. Sent me a pic of DGD decorating it. Far too early for us but each to their own.

My daughters and a couple of my grandchildren put my 95 year old mothers Christmas decorations up yesterday, her house looks like a fairy grotto but she loves it , lots of lovely memories came back to her looking at decorations made by great grandchildren , grandchildren and even things my sister and myself had made her when we were little ,especially the ones made by sister who died 6 years ago . She has just posted a photo of her tree on a forum she is on ..not bad for a 95 year old!

The earlier the better in my opinion.

I love it.

I went out to see a friend last evening and was surprised by the number of houses with outside light displays while still in November.
However I probably say this every year.
Mine will go up in 2 weeks ( unless my GD gets her way when next weekend may see them installed)

1st December - off the starting blocks with that tree!

Smileless2012 Sun 01-Dec-24 12:32:06

We were going to put ours up today but did them yesterday smile.

Our GC and GGC have a fake tree in their playroom, it went up yesterday - covered in so many lights and decks. They love it.

The outdoor trees have lights and the Santa grotto is done as well.

The real trees wouldn't last well, here, if put up yet. Three more weeks.

Calendargirl Sun 01-Dec-24 13:04:33

Have put ours up today.

One in the sitting room, one in the conservatory

The trees are years old, (fake) and some of the decorations are at least 25 years old.

If DH didn’t set them up and arrange the lights, they would remain in the loft.My contribution is putting the baubles on.

They will come down four weeks today, all done and dusted before New Year.

I do like candle bridges in the windows.

My lighted trees are more for people passing by to enjoy.

Now retired, I used to like to see other people’s trees as I drove home. It cheered the journey up.

I have spent the last three days putting up my trees and decoration. I love this time of year.

Cabbie21 Sun 08-Dec-24 16:54:56

Today I have just put my tree up and decorated it. In the past we didn’t even think about Christmas until after DH’s birthday on 10th, and as a child, nothing went up before Christmas Eve.
With the awful weather this weekend I guess many people will put their tree up, if they haven’t already done so.

Witzend Tue 17-Dec-24 18:25:55

Ours only went up today.

MissAdventure Tue 17-Dec-24 21:10:55

That's grand smile
