Ok...minor rant here!

Talking to a neighbour just before Christmas and she mentioned that she'd booked a little 'Twixmas' break this year, most probably seeing the look on my face i.e what the hell is Twixmas, she explained it was between Xmas and New year.
AIBU to be totally fed up of these ridiculous names nowadays?
Staycation...why not just say we're not going abroad this year?
Twixmas... having a short break before New year. angry.
I'll now go and eat another mince pie!

Betwixt – between two things, in this case xmas and NY as already mentioned.

Time to eat Twixes if you don't allow yourself to eat them at other times.

Think positive! 😜

Twixmas or twixtmas, is an ideal time to have a break as the hotel prices drop dramatically before rising insanely for New Year celebrations.

Georgesgran Sun 29-Dec-24 15:49:26

Do you object to Turkey and Tinsel too, Dee1020?
Those are coach trips, with hotel stays, that my Sis-in-Law and her friends like, leading up to Christmas.

Everyone here knocking the phrase Twixmas don't go on the bereavement threads otherwise you will hurt people .

Aveline Sun 29-Dec-24 16:16:28

Twixmas is fine by me but don't start me on that 'Happy holidays' nonsense!

I look forward to the introduction of Twixmas cards😬

For people you forgot to send a Xmas card to.

Do you think it could catch on?

🙄😱😂

They’re called Happy New Year cards, aren’t they?

MissAdventure Sun 29-Dec-24 16:27:39

Happy newtingle cards.

Well they were. But I’ve spotted a new commercial opportunity 😬

Off to the Patent Office first thing in the morning!

There were always New Year cards when I was a child. Christmas wasn't a big deal the but Hogmanay was the main event. We used to get a lot of New Year cards.

I agree with Whiff that people on threads which are discussing coping with Christmas alone after the death of their partner and who are braving a Twixmas break on their own would be hurt by this.

I often find myself using the word twixt instead of between so I rather like that Twixmas is now recognised as a break between Christmas Day and New Year.

The first record use of staycation was in 1944 for anglers who liked to take time off work to fish in waters close to home rather than travel to other states and counties.

What is wrong with Happy Holidays? Why is it nonsense? Christmas Day is a Holy Day. Happy Holiday and Happy Christmas broadly mean the same thing but Happy Holiday is secular and inclusive for people of different faiths.

I wonder if complainers eschew other portmanteau words, for example, brunch, emoticon, jeggings, romcom, podcast and … Brexit. Does anyone have a Labradoodle?

MissAdventure Sun 29-Dec-24 19:15:17

blush
I'm afraid I mentioned the word on the thread.
I didn't think, but I hope the lady had such a pleasant time that she isn't hurt, because it certainly wasn't meant to.

CanadianGran Sun 29-Dec-24 20:24:52

I rather like the word; it sums up a time between two recognized holidays. To me a time to settle in at home, take walks, eat the Christmas treats received as gifts, and perhaps to start a new puzzle.

Whiff Mon 30-Dec-24 05:45:05

I posted yesterday not to go on the bereavement threads about Twixmas.

What did I find today some posted on a bereavement thread knocking Twixmas . A lady on there has gone on a Twixmas break after her first Christmas after her husband died and decided to have. Twixmas holiday.

Shame on you .

welbeck Mon 30-Dec-24 06:27:29

It's not a new word.
I'm surprised some some haven't heard of it.
I can remember it in the 1980s.
Seems useful and totally inoffensive to me.

Louella12 Mon 30-Dec-24 07:12:42

Apparently this Twixmas word came into being in the late 2010s. Holiday companies bright idea for advertising.

I'd only heard the word this year and I think it's awful.

Fur babies is awful but I like Rainbow Bridge.

Allsorts Mon 30-Dec-24 07:30:58

Do not like Happy Holiday instead of Happy Christmas, political correctness gone mad. Wouldn't use the term fur babies, they are cats or dogs beautiful as they are.
Like the word Twixmas and I would love to go away then, that gap after Christmas Day and New Year is lonely for me, I am hesitant as weather might make it difficult ..

yggdrasil Mon 30-Dec-24 08:12:26

As to Happy Holiday, it depends on the people you are broadcasting to. There is Hanukkah, and Diwali also at this time, and depending on the calendar also Eid and Holi.
So one phrase covers all as well as Christmas.

Casdon Mon 30-Dec-24 08:13:56

I think Twixmas is a fine description for this period, it’s infinitely better than the older alternative, Chrimbo Limbo.

NannyJan53 Mon 30-Dec-24 08:20:20

It's a word, what's the problem? Language evolves constantly. I quite like it as it sums up the period between Christmas and New Year. If you don't like it, don't use it.....simple as.

poppysmum Mon 30-Dec-24 09:24:07

I have no idea during this week what is open and what is shut re shops as lots of small shops close until after Jan 1 which I used to do when I owned a shop.
no idea when bins which are full are being collected.
no idea when post or courier deliveries
oh well back to the naughty food

vintage1950 Mon 30-Dec-24 09:35:28

It's still Christmas and will be till Twelfth Night. Twixmas is a commercially invented word. Nothing wrong with the period between Christmas Day and New Year. Still a lot of good food to use up!

ChrimboLimbo. Love it😬

Playing with language is such fun!

Going to have to diversify my card range now🤔

wibblywobblywobblebottom Mon 30-Dec-24 11:13:38

Staycation and Twixmas are just one word. It's not rocket science.

cc Mon 30-Dec-24 11:51:21

I'd have loved the extra days off when I was working, in some of my jobs I only had Christmas Day and Boxing Day. As far as I can remember even New Years Day wasn't an official bank holiday at that time.

Baggs Mon 30-Dec-24 11:54:26

Chuckle! I like ChrimboLimbo 😂
