Ok...minor rant here!

Talking to a neighbour just before Christmas and she mentioned that she'd booked a little 'Twixmas' break this year, most probably seeing the look on my face i.e what the hell is Twixmas, she explained it was between Xmas and New year.
AIBU to be totally fed up of these ridiculous names nowadays?
Staycation...why not just say we're not going abroad this year?
Twixmas... having a short break before New year. angry.
I'll now go and eat another mince pie!

I have furbabies and I love them and look after them. They give me lots of affection and companionship and yes, love in return. I think the word furbabies fits the bill perfectly. I also like twixmas though staycation to me is staying in your own home. 🤷‍♀️. Each to their own😉.

…still a bit puzzled as to how the word could offend?

I hate people saying “New Years”. New Years what? Eve? Day?

Offence is taken, not given. And even if one argues with that, a word is not intrisically offensive. How it is used is what makes people take offence.

But, yeah, taking offence over a word like twixmas ––– good grief!

We call it the 'merryneum', which I think sums it up nicely, and gives a jolly hum to the interlude period.

valdali Mon 30-Dec-24 19:46:51

merryneum sounds a bit gynaecological.

You probably pronounce it like millennium, not perineum!

Twixmas has been used for quite a long time. I think it was started by hotels doing packages to fill a void. To be honest I'd rather have staycation than "our gate". When I first heard the latter I was a teenager and wondered for a long time where this hitherto unheard of seaside resort was. Living in the West Country I knew very little about the East coast, so I concluded it was probably there. Somewhere near Clacton I surmised.

I love the “somewhere near Clacton “😂

Whiff

Everyone here knocking the phrase Twixmas don't go on the bereavement threads otherwise you will hurt people .

But aren’t we all in fear of “ hurting “ people or offending others ?
Everyone is far too woke nowadays!

welbeck Mon 30-Dec-24 23:29:53

Yes.
Let's not be such wimps as to hesitate to heap more hurt on the bereaved.

henetha Mon 30-Dec-24 23:36:38

Well, I like twixmas, the word doesn't bother me. Far more important things to worry about. And I like that bit after Christmas when the pressure is off and I can just eat left overs and binge watch recorded Christmas programmes .
But it will be nice to get back to normal soon.

NotSpaghetti Mon 30-Dec-24 23:57:36

I have never heard "Twixmas" - but love this particular week so I think I like the word...

I think it is a positive word.

NanaTuesday I explained why I didn't want anyone knocking Twixmas on page 2. Lucky the lady in question didn't read this page and had a wonderful time . It was a very brave for her to do after the death of her husband.
Woke what ever the hell that is?
I call it common decency and asked for people not to go on the bereavement threads knocking Twixmas. But of course some people can't help themselves.

I hope you don't have to feel the bone crushing grief of a loving husband or partner dieing or even worse the death of a child .

Aaaargh!
I find that as bad as "on Christmas".

Staycation and Twixmas are just one word. It's not rocket science.

Surely they are two words!
grin

"Ourgate" 🤔

Near Margate? Or Ambergate? Or Harrogate?

MissAdventure

I wonder where these words come from.
Is there an office, somewhere of qualified 'name thinker uppers'?

It started as betwixmas Literally between and I heard that word decades ago. It gor shortened around 2010 I think. Harmless word and a good description for those cheese and chocolate eating days when you are not sure what day it is 😃

MissAdventure Wed 01-Jan-25 11:22:38

I like betwixt.
And I like twixes.

I just always seem to be a few steps behind with new phrases and words.
