Ok...minor rant here!

Talking to a neighbour just before Christmas and she mentioned that she'd booked a little 'Twixmas' break this year, most probably seeing the look on my face i.e what the hell is Twixmas, she explained it was between Xmas and New year.
AIBU to be totally fed up of these ridiculous names nowadays?
Staycation...why not just say we're not going abroad this year?
Twixmas... having a short break before New year. angry.
I'll now go and eat another mince pie!

I rather like the term Twixmas. It's simple and descriptive and much easier to say than "that dreary week of nothingness before normality resumes".

AGAA4 Sun 29-Dec-24 11:52:09

It reminds me of that chocolate bar. It's just another silly word.

I wouldn’t call it a dreary week of nothingness! Lovely relaxation (at least once you’re retired!) and lots of leftovers to eat up, no shopping, but trips out when so many attractions are still so Christmassy, with cheerful lights and decorations.

After 12th Night, when all the lights and decorations are gone, is IMO the dreary time - as if early January isn’t dreary enough anyway.

But Twixmas is the perfect opportunity for finishing off all those festive leftovers, opened cheeses and biscuits, ends of pork pies, neglected fruits and what have you. And getting “stuck into” new books before it all flares up again for New Year 🔥.then back to Frugal Foods (not!)

Nothing to stop anyone keeping the lights up even if the tree comes down..there are lovely cheerful plants to be had and a glossy new calendar to put up😊

That one doesn’t bother me too much nor the staycation the ones that really sets my teeth on edge are ‘Fur babies’ and animals going ‘over the rainbow bridge’ they really set my teeth on edge

I love the feeling of not being sure exactly what day it is. It's such a nice relaxing time for me. Boring old routine will be back soon enough.

Aldom Sun 29-Dec-24 12:08:44

'twixt nothing new about the word. A diminutive of betwixt meaning between.
But I was amused last night to see an advert for Dartsmas.

Granmarderby10 Sun 29-Dec-24 12:49:03

Dartsmas? Dare I ask - before googling

Aldom Sun 29-Dec-24 12:59:25

Grandmaderby10 I didn't take much notice of the advert, but something to do with Darts competitions I think. smile

Me too BlueBelle!

Twixmas is a good way to describe the limbo between Christmas and New Year. I think of betwixt and between. So, I don't mind using the term. I do agree with other words being daft though.

MissInterpreted Sun 29-Dec-24 13:01:57

I love the rainbow bridge thing. I don't see that it's any different from saying people go to heaven. I never use the term 'fur babies' though.

Granmarderby10 Sun 29-Dec-24 13:03:40

Oh dear thanks Aldom how depressing is that😂 ..nearly as bad as snooker.

Baggs Sun 29-Dec-24 13:08:16

AIBU to think that minding about the sort of things mentioned – that is: wordplay – in the OP is the essence of grump, shallow, silly?

winterwhite Sun 29-Dec-24 13:10:53

But this isn’t pedants’ corner! Fur babies etc are beside the point.
Twixtmas seems an attempt to glamourise and maybe commercialise a pleasant low tempo few days. I think it’s a frightful word and concept.

Baggs Sun 29-Dec-24 13:10:58

It took me a while to twig what Twixmas meant when I first came across it on GN the other day but then I thought it was a good 'reduction' of "the week between Christmas and New Year": one word instead of several.

Granmarderby10 Sun 29-Dec-24 13:11:20

Nope 🙂‍↔️

The concept is (and was) always there. It's ot the concept that's new, just a word to describe the concept. See my previous post. I'm spending twixn=mas at home mostly. Nothing glamorous or comercialised anout it.

There was nothing glamorous or commercialised about xmas in my house either.

Frightful? Don't be ridiculous!

Baggs Sun 29-Dec-24 13:16:26

Anyone who had an xmas tree or sent cards is joining in the commercialisation of xmas.

Lathyrus3 Sun 29-Dec-24 13:28:13

I look forward to the introduction of Twixmas cards😬

For people you forgot to send a Xmas card to.

Do you think it could catch on?

🙄😱😂

BigBertha1 Sun 29-Dec-24 14:54:20

Twixmas is the perfect time to visit family leaving Christmas and New Year to enjoy by yourselves- this is best for us. Juts returned from a short break with No2 daughter after enjoying a very nice Christmas together at home. 2.5 days with my SIL when he has a cough is MORE than enough.

Franski Sun 29-Dec-24 15:21:55

Whatever it's called i absolutely love this slow and liminal space between Christmas and 2nd January. Leftovers in fridge. Nothing much going on. Bliss.

MissAdventure Sun 29-Dec-24 15:24:47

I wonder where these words come from.
Is there an office, somewhere of qualified 'name thinker uppers'?
