Husband doesn’t understand the whole dishcloth/cleaning rag thing!

We recently moved home and we have got rid of masses of stuff and bought lots of lovely shiny new things.
However some things cannot be replaced.

I have a huge kitchen drawer with a basket of probably 30 dishcloths and another of cleaning rags.
The cleaning rags are pure linen tea towels that are old and worn, they polish like magic, the dishcloths are proper Lancashire dishcloths, I think some of these have been with me 40+ years.

They work brilliantly are not made in China and I love them.

My husband cannot understand my attachment and bought me some new dishcloths (yes been thoroughly spoilt I know!)they are Chinese rubbish so have been relegated to the utility room.

He thinks I am mad……I think I am perfectly sane.

AIBU?

He’s wrong

Personal attachment to Lancashire dishcloths is new to me.

Jaxjacky Wed 30-Jul-25 18:18:20

That’s an awful lot of cloths/rags.

Astitchintime Wed 30-Jul-25 18:21:18

Sorry Jaxjacky, I disagree……….one can never have too many dishcloths and cleaning rags……..one use and they’re consigned to the laundry basket 💁‍♀️

My DH thinks dishcloths and cleaning, polishing cloths are interchangeable. Think yourself lucky Sago

Jaxjacky Wed 30-Jul-25 18:23:39

Probably as I don’t have any of either!

Know what you mean. I like nice white Lancashire dusters, not those horrible yellow ones. I hide mine as my hubby will pick up the first rag that comes to hand. I have had tea towels twenty odd years, still snowy white.
Men don’t have any idea about cleaning cloths. I keep dish cloths & tea towels separate from my cleaning gear, otherwise he would use the dish cloth on his DIY projects 😩

I have a hierarchy of cleaning cloths, all in my head. Woe betide anyone who messes with it! grin

When I was about 40 I was rushed into hospital with acute appendicitis. I asked my Dh to go home and pack a bag for me, including a towel, soap and a face cloth. I discovered when I opened it, post-op, that he’d given me a dish cloth instead of a face flannel! He claimed he couldn’t tell the difference. confused

Oh I get you, totally. I have just found again a whole roll of uncut, unstitched teatowels, in the best cotton, white with red check- left over from mum's trousseau in 1936! Glad DH totally understand how much better they are then any morden ones. And yes, old ones which are getting too ragged get cut and used as cleaning/polishing squares.

Sago Wed 30-Jul-25 19:56:36

Oh keep them coming please!

I feel more normal.

Chocolatelovinggran Wed 30-Jul-25 19:58:01

To add to the 1936 vibe here, I'm proud to say that I knit my dishcloths from cotton.
My children think that I am ...nuts..

So, your husband thought you'd like newer cleaning rags but you don't.

You wild things.

JamesandJon33 Wed 30-Jul-25 20:09:48

So do I , flannels too.

windmill1 Wed 30-Jul-25 20:10:52

And dishcloths, yellow dusters, polishing cloths must be 100% cotton. Mixed fibre items are hopeless, especially for polishing mirrors and windows.

LadyGracie Wed 30-Jul-25 20:34:52

I have dishcloths, for dishes, cleaning cloths for cleaning, dusting cloths for dusting and old tea towels as rags for drying windows after washing them etc.

Hold on, it's not quite the dance of the seven veils 🫣 🫢

BlueberryPie Wed 30-Jul-25 20:41:23

It really doesn't make much difference and isn't important.

Whoops, I meant to quote this seven veils thing because it cracked me up. smile

I mean, sometimes I dust with a washcloth. Other times, a paper towel or a sock or even the cat. No difference. shrug

I do not know what OPs DH doesn't understand. I didn't understand either. I had to look up what a 'Lancashire dishcloth' was! It is whaat I call a stockinette floor cloth and I do not like them.

I have drying up clothes for drying up crockery cutlery etc. Floor clothes - much sturdier, more heavily woven cloths than the 'Lancashire' that I use for washing paintwork and surfaces during a regular clean and I have old towels cut down in the cleaning cupboard with the spray polish for polishing off.

I dust with a feather duster and have a spontex cloth on the sink. I have a window cleaner for the outside of windows and a chamois leather for the inside.

And this is the first time in my life I have ever given these matters a thought. - and probably the last.

RosieandherMaw Wed 30-Jul-25 20:56:31

I have a cleaner

Jaxjacky Wed 30-Jul-25 20:57:52

I haven’t got a cat either BlueberryPie 🙁

SueDonim Wed 30-Jul-25 20:59:34

So do I Rosiesmaw. She is even more exacting about her cleaning implements than I am! She has a whole schedule pinned up on the inside of the cleaning cupboard door. 🤣🤣
