Why won’t people wear masks

About a week ago, DH and I finally recovered from a three week long coughing virus which put us in bed for a week. This morning, DH went to our village shop where he met a friend who told him, while coughing and spluttering all over him, that she had a dreadful cold. Wouldn’t it have been common courtesy for her to wear a mask in that situation? I think it means we shall have to wear a mask whenever we go out.

Graceless

I have carers coming 3 times a day. I have stage 4 cancer. I complained because my morning carer had a cold and wasn't wearing a mask. Now everyone but her wears one. She's also told me she'd never have a flu or COVID vaccination because she was ill after her first one.

Ask for her not to be appointed with your team of carers. She is obviously not suited to the work. Don’t let her undermine your health and well being.

I had bloodclot in the lungs at the beginning of the lockdown and it nearly killed me, I just could'nt wear one and still can't. But, I always take a bundle of tissues with me for coughs and sneezes, but would you believe, some people don't like that either.

Because there’s no legal obligation to wear one it’s personal choice now. Maybe if you’re scared of the germs wear one yourself then you are protecting yourself.

My late husband was very vulnerable during the last few years and so we chose to wear masks when we went into supermarkets hospital or doctors surgeries etc. as for carers, then you should surely have the right to ask for them to wear masks if it’s what you want? I would definitely have insisted but honestly think the carer should have the training and experience to make the decision for themselves.

I think the sick person should have stayed at home . If I see a mask on someone I take it as a heads up to stay away - they must be sick ! The mask isn’t going to stop me catching what they’ve got!

kjmpde Wed 11-Feb-26 14:46:58

I think some people don't think that masks actually work . I often see people who will have a mask on their chins but not covering their noses. The masks are sometimes very grubby and have been work for longer than a single use.
In very crude terms I read somewhere that if you can smell when somebody has passed wind which has gone through underwear and trousers then no single layer of paper will stop a virus!

It is common knowledge that masks do nothing. If anything, they encourage the spread of infection as they get hot, damp and sweaty.
If you have a bad cough/cold, stay away from others or wear a scarf when out and wrap it round your mouth if in close proximity to others.

I caught a nasty cold (which turned into a chest infection ) from a nurse taking a blood sample. She was coughing and sneezing all over the place. As I’ve got COPD it could have ended up being pneumonia.
I don’t think she should have been allowed to work with patients .

I can't believe the number of posters who have clearly not read the whole thread. People blithely commenting that masks don't do anything to protect from virus transmission: "it's commonly known"; "it's been clearly shown" etc . Read the goddam thread so you can see the scientific reports on research about masks and their CLEARLY PROVEN efficacy and stop shouting in the wilderness with incorrect and possibly dangerous generalisations.

Kandinsky Wed 11-Feb-26 15:15:16

They don’t stop germs from spreading - if you cough with a mask on half the germs fly out of the sides. You’d literally need to be wearing an airtight helmet to stop all the germs.

Just seen your post Outcast52 😂

Gosh I saw people pulling down their mask to have a sneeze- so rendering social distancing a waste of time.
I won’t be doing all that again.
If I am unlucky to get Covid again, I will just isolate at home & do an online shop

Astitchintime Wed 11-Feb-26 15:22:54

Nandalot, did your DH not consider challenging the friend as to why they were out in public when coughing and sneezing ? He could also have considered stepping away from her and saying ‘ we’ve just over a nasty respiratory illness so I don’t want your germs thank you’!

Wasn’t my nurse was it? Her runny nose dripped all over my chest whilst having a pre-op during Covid. Luckily I didn’t catch whatever she was suffering from.
I was just grateful to be getting my surgery 😅

It needed explaining it seemed - as those who want the rest of us in masks would keep us that way for evermore left to them.

We can't all live permanently in the way a minority wants us to live to suit them. That is not how our society is. Just when would people "wanting others in masks" accept us binning them? 6 months, 1 year, 5 years, never?

It had to be stated clearly - the minority will not rule the majority for evermore because that is what they personally want.

Given your very public stance on vaccination, I am unwilling to give a lot of weight to this (fortunately minority ) point of view

Didn't even wear one in Covid, disgusting unhygienic things yuk!!

WithNobsOnIt Wed 11-Feb-26 15:38:20

I recently had to make several journeys to a local hospital in Spain whilst on goluday Urgent Care dept near Malaga in Spain with a broken arm.

As soon as you entered the hospital there was a male nurse sat at desk wrh a Security man whi handed you a mask and watched you put it on

All the staff wore masks ae well.

I think there are good reasons not to wear a mask if you have health, medical problems or breathing difficulties.

I also think not wearing a mask during Covid was seen s some kind of badgebof alkegiance by loony anti vaxxers which has not gone away.

Sneezing in public with a cold without wiping with a tissue is just downright disgusting. But some people are like that.

The IOF and ICE seem to manage to have very active lives while wearing masks.
Perhaps we should find out what the secret is in order to benefit the vulnerable in society, rather than leaving it all up to them? (Bearing in mind that infections are not limited to initial contact, so if you are sharing air with eg a plane load of people one of whom is expectorating virus laden droplets into that air, chances are the next person you meet will be infected by you even if you have immunity to what you have inhaled yourself)

Because they’re very selfish and thick as lumpy custard !

What a ridiculous statement.

If I was so vulnerable I'd wear a medical-quality mask every time I went to the nurse/Dr.

Well, bully for you.

Aren't you just great!

However, maybe please let everyone here have a daily update of where you're going that day so that we can avoid you.

(Although I suspect that most people to whom you're known avoid you anyway as you sound so incredibly selfish, self-centred, uncaring and smug).

If we were meant to have masks, God would have provided them.

Did he provide you with clothes too? Or were you born wearing them?

Yes, clothing can be found in nature. Fig leaves, animal skins and the like. But not masks made of unnatural fibres, which never decompose in nature or landfills. I work in a home for seniors, and no one wears a mask unless ill. Otherwise we would stay at home. Thankfully, I am never ill, so do not have to wear those horrible masks, which do not work in any case. The viruses are so small, that they are able to pass right through the FFP2 masks, besides the fact that one's breath also manages to bypass the mask. Wear a mask if it comforts you, but please do not expect people to wear thise things at work, making it difficult to breathe. If the hopitals and nursing homes expected their staff to wear masks all shift long, they would be having even more difficuties finding staff.

I cancelled a dental, and phlebotomist appointment last week as I had a cold. Actually it’s the first cold/cough that I’ve had in about 4 years. I’m vulnerable, and do avoid possible risky exposure. If I’d had to go out I would have worn a mask, but to be honest I do wonder how effective they are, either to protect me, or protect others from me. 🙂

Blossoming Wed 11-Feb-26 16:29:24

Is mask wearing a thing now? I never see anyone wearing them, not even at the hospital where I’ve been today.
