AIBU? My husband never seems to learn! He asks me questions all the time from another room. I can’t hear him although I am not deaf. I have told him multiple times to come to where I am but no he still calls from another room. Rant over!!!
I heard Harry Rednapps wife say the same years ago.

My husband says I’m going deaf! I’m not! He calls to me when I’m upstairs cleaning my teeth or if I’m in our front bedroom with the window open!! If I come down and say what did you say he says it doesn’t matter! Grrr

Mine will wait until the kettle is on - it’s loud, or the microwave is on, or the air fryer, or I am vacuuming, or drying my hair. Most of the time I never hear him so he has to come and talk directly. Wouldn’t swap him though.

Its not just older gents or hubbies either, its all men! My son does it as well. But if i do it back, he always mishears it as something else.(usually something hilarious which is nothing like what i said!) But yet he can't understand why i want him to come in kitchen for instance, instead of shouting through, even though he's just proven my point.! Blokes! 🙄😆

Yes, Astitchintime, my son does that mostly, waits till ive washer or micro on or airfryer,or kettle. Then complains if he has to repeat it!😬

Nannan2 Wed 12-Aug-26 14:30:37

See,definitely a bloke thing,no matter their age.😁

Nannan2 Wed 12-Aug-26 14:32:54

Oh gawd yes,the "it doesnt matter" when you already asked a couple of times to repeat it as they decide they dont want to now.

FranA Wed 12-Aug-26 15:04:38

Yes. Mine did it all the time so I have gone selectively deaf. I don’t jump any more. His other habit is to get cross and shout at inanimate objects. For instance if he spills something in the kitchen or his computer beats him. I used to rush to his aid. Now I just leave him to solve his own problems until he actually comes to me and asks for help.

Oh the same here and I am also expected to be able to see through walls and have eyes in the back of my head and see what he is doing in the fridge. And the ' what is this' when I have no clue what he is talking about!

This is definitely a thing in our house too!
When we’re both at home it’s a constant game of ‘Sorry what did you say?’ or ‘Can’t hear you I’m in the other room!’
With varying degrees of exasperation 😀

Def not just a male thing! I care for my housebound sister. Who rather likes to tell me a list of things she'd like me to do. I hope into the kitchen, tap might be running or kettle boiling...not a hope in hells chance I can hear her. Despite me telling her frequently that I can't hear when I'm in the kitchen, she still does it. Grrrr! I think it helps her still feel like she's in control as she can't move very much. But everything takes twice as long to do.

I actually am hard of hearing and wear hearing aids, and whilst they do help they do not 100% replicate natural normal hearing, Still however he insists on talking to me through three walls when I’m out of the room, he’ll also talk to me when he’s walking away from me, and when we’re in the car with the windows open thus amplifying road noise and the radio on
He’s also been diagnosed with hearing loss but refuses the wear his aids 😩😩

AuntieE Wed 12-Aug-26 16:12:27

Mine did it too, even when I had told him there was no way I could hear him, when I was in another room, and even while he was fit enough to get off his backside and come to where I actually was.

My mother did it too.

There is no way you can stop them. Ignore, and when asked if you did not hear them speak, reply, "No, I did not."

That might just make them stop this annoying habit, but don't count on it!

My late husband used to call me from the garden! He’d shout my name and wait for me to go out and answer him! Never crossed his mind to actually come inside to speak to me! When I asked him about this his answer was usually that I would be upset if he trod dirt into my kitchen, even if he was sitting on the bench reading the paper! It became a standing joke with our lovely neighbour, who would usually shout over the fence ‘ two sugars in mine please’ ! I was actually chatting to my neighbour yesterday and he said how quiet it was without him. I sincerely wish he was still out there shouting my name now . Cherish every moment all even the annoying ones 🌹

Aaah! Sankey what a lovely response. By the way I'm guilty as charged and I have the nerve to be annoyed when he can't hear me from another room. Sorry darling! I'll go and say that in person - not from another room heheh...

I can't believe someone made a post of such an irritating common thing. And I thought it was just me being rude. Or he thought I was not rude for answering. Every time I was in the middle of something, outside or in another room, a question would come up and I would have to drop everything I am doing, stop what I am doing, walk to the place he is and ask, "What did you say?" and then after I answer and go back to my task, it would happen again. I always wondered why he wouldn't just follow me around to discuss things or go directly to me to ask the question instead of having me drop everything, go find him and then respond. Now my adult son does it too. WTF?

Macaydia Wed 12-Aug-26 16:24:28

*Or he thought I was rude for answering.

Macaydia Wed 12-Aug-26 16:25:29

*Or he thought I was rude for NOT answering. (Geee, i can't get my thoughts to coincide with my typing fingers, sorry)

missdeke Wed 12-Aug-26 16:36:07

Just ignore him and pretend you didn't hear him.

undines Wed 12-Aug-26 18:22:29

Just ignore it. My husband's favourite trick is to keep me talking about something non-essential as I'm half in and half out of the door with a big basket of laundry, or similar. There he sits in total comfort sounding off. Now I just walk on by...

A high proportion all seem to be tarred with the same brush

Rocketstop2 Wed 12-Aug-26 19:03:18

Mine does it and then sighs because I have to ask him to repeat what he said !

I wear hearing aids, most of the time while at home I listen to an audiobook or podcast etc, DH knows this, but forgets, he comes to find me eventually to tell me he’s been talking to me for ages, did I not hear him, well no, of course not, it’s been two years now I’m wondering when the penny will drop.
