Crafty gran: I would get some cheapish double knitting yarn and 4 mm needles. A charity shop might be a cheap source. Then a book showing techniques, also look on u tube. Some knitting shops have evening classes, or find a knitter who might help you.
Even for us experienced knitters it is never plain sailing. I have just undone a side of a baby jumper, it was completely a different size to the other side. I'd cast on 14 too few stitches!! How, I do not know! Good luck, happy knitting!
