I'm thinking of buying a yarn bowl πŸ€”

I've seen some nice yarn bowls on both amazon and Ebay. They look really pretty, but I wonder if I really need one.

Does anyone possess one and if so are they useful? All thoughts welcome πŸ€—

Ha ha! Not sure that would be a good idea with a cat. Not sure which one would come off the worst 🀭

I use a smallish Mason Cash bowl. No slot for the wool but it works well.

A previous poster mentioned the beehive type. My mother had one of those but got on better with a large Tupperware jug.

I like the look of them but if you're using two colours at once, it could get confusing. I've been knitting two sleeves on the same needles and the yarn for each can get tangled up if I don't keep an eye on them.

I've just checked on ebay and they are selling the vintage beehive type. It's made of bakelite. Sounds interesting.

I have one but it doesn't really do the job I hoped. It's rather lovely though and I use it to keep hooks and stitch markers in.

I’m knitting stripes at the moment, so I emptied a bag holder that I bought from a church sale (tube, 2open elasticated ends) and have put one ball in each end. It’s working well so far… yet to see how well it works when the balls shrink 🀞

I don’t have a yarn bowl or anything similar - have never felt the need to have more accessories than absolutely necessary. My balls of yarn are allowed free range on the floor while I’m using them and I rarely have issues with tangled yarn. But I have no pets to pounce on the yarn and play with it.

Obviously they are not going to be useful for absolutely anything you are knitting. They are nice to have for when you want to use them though.

I rewind all of my yarn into ball and just use an old plastic mixing bowl. It works for me but if you fancy something else then go on and treat yourself.

This idea just popped in to my in box so I thought I'd share it.
I think it's great - really flexible as the clips will fit any size bowl and rather cheaper than a yarn bowl.

lixy, what a great idea πŸ˜ŠπŸ‘

Thank you all for your responses and suggestions. I have now treated myself to a bakelite beehive yarn holder (probably from the 50s), as first mentioned by Greyduster. Its quaintness appealed to me. I wondered about its history and who had owned it throughout the years. It's great fun too!

Happy knitting/crocheting to all!

My new beehive yarn holder 😁

If anyone else fancies buying one, they sell them on ebay.

My mum remembers her mother using the beehive kind.

I have a few of these bakelite beehives in different colours and they are lovely. Years ago yarn did come in much smaller, finer balls like 1 oz so they are better suited to small amounts. So much of our yarn now is DK, Chunky or Aran weight and would not fit in these.

Greyduster Sun 14-Jan-24 14:05:35

Well Santa Claus did bring me a yarn bowl for Christmas. It’s take me a while to get used to it - I have to uncoil and rewind the wool to get it to flow freely through the slot, but it does keep everything tidy.

Is that a tiny bowl or a giant ball of yarn, (Greyduster*? grin. It's a lovely colour, either way. What are you knitting?

Fairycakes Sun 14-Jan-24 15:15:18

Love the yarn bowl, Greyduster. I haven't seen one with that design before.

DamaskRose Sun 14-Jan-24 15:43:42

I love the look of yarn bowls and have often thought of buying one, maybe from an independent seller, wooden or ceramic. There are Etsy sellers who make yarn cosies to tuck various sizes of yarn balls/cakes into.

Sorry Fairycakes I read your opening post as 'I'm thinking of buying a barn owl.' I'm off to clean my glasses.

Sorry Fairycakes I read your opening post as 'I'm thinking of buying a barn owl.' I'm off to clean my glasses.

Oh, that did make me laugh πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ thank you AGAA4
We used to have an owl that would hoot every night in our back garden, hopefully keeping any mice etc down but I haven't heard it lately. I'd love another one.
Are they available from Hobbycraft and Amazon?

I do like the look of the yarn bowls too πŸ™‚

Fairycakes Sun 14-Jan-24 17:44:59

AGAA4 Ha! Ha! So funny. I've done the same thing myself. I walked past my crockpot one day and thought it said crackpot which just about summed me up that day. And I had no excuse as I didn't wear glasses at that point 🀣🀣🀣

Fairycakes Sun 14-Jan-24 17:47:38

Actually, AGAA4 I did have a friend who had a pet owl. It was fascinating to see it up close.

Doodle I’m knitting a cardigan with cables running up the front and sleeves. It’s a fairly simple pattern for a bear of very little brain like me! The bowl is five inches in diameter and the wool is a standard 100 gm ball.
