I've been knitting squares for charity projects for years and it took me a long time to find the diagonal method!

Here's a link; you can make them any size, of course, just measure the edge. I find increasing to about 50 stitches in DK on 4mm needles makes a 7" square, depending on how tight or loose a knitter you are and some DK yarns don't seem as thick as others.

Callistemon Thank you, I think that's called a Corner to corner square?? I have seen that, I'll have to try it! I must admit, lots of my problems seem to be down to the wool. I have some squares that are almost perfect and took very little effort. The one I'm doing now is straight on three sides but one side (with the same number of stitches all the way through) gets about an inch wider by the time I reach the top 🙄 All DK acrylic but different colours. I like Bella Coco - I started one of her boxes about a year ago but got lost in creating the rounds. I'll have to go back and take another look!

When I first started crocheting mine all ended up as a trapezoid shape!

Then I started making Granny squares and prefer that as I never seem to keep to the same number of stitches if I do rows.

I just admire anyone who can crochet anything at all - I'm all fingers and thumbs whenever I try!

Actually, I think I might have got carried away with the rows. The neck looked twice as long as the one in the pattern. I counted all the rows and I think I had about 5 extra😳. I obviously wasn't focusing 🙄😆

Looking at your version of Oliver and the link you posted, I think the problem might be that you need a bit more stuffing at the top end...

Oh dear, I think that came out a bit wrong! What I meant was that the head needs to be more rounded...

To crochet a Granny square:

Start with about 5 chains, join
Then follow Bella Coco or Hooked by Robin

But mainly because I can't even get a square to be square. They go off at all angles. My last round was oval, but I just made an oval basket instead of a round one😅

To knit a square:

Start by casting on 2 stitches.
K1, increase in next stitch, knit to end
Repeat that row until the side measures the length required.
Knit one row
Then begin decreasing:
K1, K2 together, knit to end
When 2 stitches remain either K2 together or I prefer to take 1 stitch over the other.
Fasten off.

Leave long ends for sewing up.

It makes a firmer square with a small border.

Stocking stitch would make it curl and is not really suitable for squares but you could try moss stitch etc.

My worst was after I’d knitted an entire long black cardigan for my sister - except for the ‘pick up and knit’ about a million stitches all round the outside edge for the band.

Well. I really did try, over and over, to pick up the right number for the first section, but it was so hard just to SEE the effing stitches!

I’m afraid to say I eventually gave up and binned the whole thing. Couldn’t ever face that yarn again! Luckily it was pretty cheap acrylic - for a sister in the US who tumble dries absolutely everything.

I wouldn't unpick him as I think the neck is a "feature" of the pattern. Look how low his arms are in the original.

Maybe he's modeled on this one...

A member of my craft group made balloon dogs to sell for a cancer charity..They looked hilarious before she folded them in to look like a dog. Just image a line of 2" long stuffed looking like oval beads with couple of stitches between each one. If you have a dirty mind like my group you know what they looked like . 🤣
